2 Biograhical note Jimmy Lóez Reseña biográfica Born in Lima, Peru in 1978, Jimmy Lóez is already establishing an international following. rom 1998 until 000 he studied with Enrique Iturriaga at the National Conservatory of Music in Lima, and from 000 till 007, with Veli-Matti Puumala and Eero Hämeenniemi at the ibelius Academy in Helsinki, from where he obtained his Master of Music Degree in 007. Jimmy Lóez, nacido en Lima en 1978, se encuentra ya logrando un reconocimiento internacional. Desde 1998 hasta 000 estudió con Enrique Iturriaga en el Conservatorio Nacional de Música en Lima, y de 000 a 007 con Veli-Matti Puumala y Eero Hämeenniemi en la Academia ibelius en Helsinki, en donde obtuvo su Maestría en Música en 007. His works have been erformed by ensembles such as Chicago ymhony Orchestra, Philadelhia Orchestra, Boston ymhony Orchestra, t. Paul Chamber Orchestra, Atlanta ymhony Orchestra, ort Worth ymhony, Helsinki Philharmonic, The Hague Residentie Orkest, ymhony Orchestra of Chile and the National ymhony Orchestra of Peru, among others; and in venues such as Carnegie Hall, Asen Music estival, Tanglewood Music estival, Darmstadt Music estival, Donaueschingen Music estival and the 010 Youth Olymic Games in ingaore. He has been awarded numerous rizes: irst Prize at the 01 and 011 Nicola de Lorenzo Music Comosition Contest; 009 Georges Ladd Prix de Paris (UC Berkeley), Kranichsteiner Musikreis at the 008 Darmstadt International Course for Contemorary Music (Germany); 008 Morton Gould Young Comoser Award (New York); econd Prize at the 008 Nicola de Lorenzo Music Comosition Contest (UC Berkeley); Orchestra Comosition Award at the ävelly 006 Comosition Cometition (inland); tiendienreis at the International Course for Contemorary Music, Darmstadt 006 (Germany); Honorable Mention at the Irino Comosition Prize for Chamber Music 005 (Jaan); irst Prize at the ALEA III 00 International Comosition Cometition (UA); and the Orchestra Prize at the CCA International Comosition Cometition 00 (Taiwan). Mr. Lóez comleted his PhD in music comosition at the University of California, Berkeley with Edmund Camion in May 01. He is a member of UOMEN ÄVELTÄJÄT (ociety of innish Comosers), ACAP (American ociety of Comosers, Authors and Publishers), CIRCOMPER (Circle of Comosers of Peru) and the an rancisco Chater of the Recording Academy (GRAMMY). His ortrait CD titled Musuq Peru was released under the label ilarmonika LLC in 008. He is a founding member and Vice President of kohobeat Musical Association in inland. Projects for 01 include erformances with the Tamere Philharmonic Orchestra, Gothenburg ymhony orchestra and the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio rance. He is currently working on a new commission to mark the Centennial eason of the ort Worth ymhony Orchestra. As art of the Renée leming initiative, the Lyric Oera of Chicago has commissioned him a full-length oera based on the bestselling novel Bel Canto. The world remiere is scheduled for the season. 3 Commentary by the comoser Avec wing Comentarios del autor I like to think of Avec wing as a fresh and unrejudiced aroach to contemorary music comosition that embraces today s oular culture and incororates elements from jazz and other closely related musical genres of our time. Avec wing reresenta desde mi ersectiva- un acercamiento fresco y desrejuiciado hacia la comosición contemoránea, el cual acoge la cultura oular de nuestro tiemo e incorora elementos de jazz y de otros géneros musicales vinculados. This is only my second iece to feature a drum set, the first one dating back to 00. But given the fact that the iece makes clear allusions to musical genres in which this instrument is omniresent, and since I only had one ercussion layer at my disosal, the choice of having a drum set came quite naturally. I have almost no background in jazz; therefore, I myself was surrised when I started noticing its influence during the comositional rocess. But instead of turning away from it, I decided to exlore it. This iece, however, is not to be understood as a form of crossover, fusion or anything along those lines. Everything contained within it is the result of my own musical needs and not of a deliberate attemt to mix or combine different styles. And although I have mentioned the word jazz quite a few times, it is also worth noting that a large art of this iece has little or nothing to do with it. This work, whose title makes reference to Canada s bilingual heritage, has been written for Lorraine Villancourt and The Nouvel Ensemble Moderne. Esta es mi segunda obra en incororar batería; la rimera data del año 00.
