The kids were just starting school and the weather was still up in the nineties and now all of a sudden winter is coming and so is the new year! While it can be a very exciting time of year it can also cause some to become painfully aware of those loved ones who passed away and are no longer able to join in the celebrations. The Promotores team will be discussing grief and loss and how the Latino and Hmong communities use cultural traditions to heal from these losses and honor their loved ones. SALUDOS DEL EQUIPO DE PROMOTORES Estamos realmente en Noviembre? Con las festividades a la vuelta de la esquina, esta época del año puede sentirse como si el tiempo pasara rápidamente. Los niños acababan de comenzar la escuela, el clima hace unos días estaba en los noventas y ahora sorpresivamente se acerca el invierno y con el las festividades de año nuevo! Culturalmente hablando, para algunos esta temporada pude significar una época rica en festividades, pero para otros puede significar una época dolorosa ya que también se recuerda a los seres que ya han fallecido. En honor a nuestras comunidades Latina and Hmong, Promotores dedica este mes a la parte holística de la celebración del Dia de Muertos sin minimizar el dolor y la pérdida que acompaña la muerte de un ser querido. Así como a la sanación y honra que trae consigo su tradición. 2 2 Pan de Muertos Recipe 1/4 cup margarine 1/4 cup milk 1/4 cup warm water (110 degrees F) 3 cups all-purpose flour 1 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast 1/2 teaspoon salt 2 teaspoons anise seed 1/4 cup white sugar 2 eggs, beaten 2 teaspoons orange zest 1/4 cup white sugar 1/4 cup orange juice 1 tablespoon orange zest 2 tablespoons white sugar Directions Heat the milk and the butter together in a medium saucepan, until the butter melts. Remove from the heat and add them warm water. The mixture should be around 110 degrees F (43 degrees C). In a large bowl combine 1 cup of the flour, yeast, salt, anise seed and 1/4 cup of the sugar. Beat in the warm milk mixture then add the eggs and orange zest and beat until well combined. Stir in 1/2 cup of flour and continue adding more flour until the dough is soft. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic. Place the dough into a lightly greased bowl cover with plastic wrap and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size. This will take about 1 to 2 hours. Punch the dough down and shape it into a large round loaf with a round knob on top. Place dough onto a baking sheet, loosely cover with plastic wrap and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until just about doubled in size. Bake in a preheated 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) oven for about 35 to 45 minutes. Remove from oven let cool slightly then brush with glaze. To make glaze: In a small saucepan combine the 1/4 cup sugar, orange juice and orange zest. Bring to a boil over medium heat and boil for 2 minutes. Brush over top of bread while still warm. Sprinkle glazed bread with white sugar. Cultural Collective As I m sure most of us have realized by now that each culture has a very unique way of dealing with grief and the loss of a loved one. The Latino and Hmong communities both have specific traditional events that they use to honor those who have passed away. In Hmong tradition the funeral is one of the most important ceremonies, because it is a period of time in which the deceased's soul must return to their birthplace and then travel to meet their ancestors in the afterlife. The process is very intricate and can last anywhere from 3 to 12 days. The Latino culture views death in general much differently than Americans. It is widely accepted as a part of life and is something that is discussed even with young children. Which is why it is no surprise that the traditional event that they use to honor the dead is more of a celebration than a memorial. Dia de los Muertos or Day of the Dead is a Mexican tradition that lasts from October 31st to November 2nd. Families visit the gravesites of their deceased and decorate them with flowers, candles, and sugar skulls. There are parades and parties through the streets and some families make altars in their homes with offerings for their loved ones that they have lost. The purpose of these altars is to encourage a visit from the soul of their deceased loved ones. In recent times, especially in America these altars have become a huge way of celebrating Mexico s heritage and the beautiful rich creative culture they have developed. One very important tradition in both of these cultures as well as American culture is the use of food to bring everyone together. Pan de Muertos is a bread traditionally made for Day of the Dead celebrations. We ve included the recipe and hope that through food we can find community, regardless of our cultural backgrounds. 3 Receta de Pan de Muertos 1/4 taza de margarina 1/4 taza de leche 1/4 taza de agua tibia (110 grados F) 3 tazas de harina 1 1/4 cucharaditas de levadura seca activa 1/2 cucharadita de sal 2 cucharaditas de semilla de anís 1/4 de taza de azúcar blanca 2 huevos batidos 2 cucharaditas de cáscara de naranja 1/4 de taza de azúcar blanca 1/4 de taza de jugo de naranja 1 cucharada de ralladura de naranja 2 cucharadas de azúcar blanca Instrucciones Caliente la leche y la mantequilla juntas en una cacerola mediana, hasta que la mantequilla se derrita. Retire del fuego y agregue el agua tibia. La mezcla debe estar a 110 grados F. En un tazón grande, combine 1 taza de harina, levadura, sal, semilla de anís y 1/4 de taza de azúcar. En otro tazón mezcle la leche caliente con los huevos y la cáscara de naranja y bata hasta que estén bien combinados y agregue poco a poco 1/2 taza de la mezcla de harina previamente preparada hasta que la masa tome una consistencia suave. Coloque la masa sobre una superficie ligeramente enharinada y amase hasta que quede suave y elástica. Coloque la masa en un recipiente ligeramente engrasado. Cúbrala con una envoltura de plástico en un lugar cálido hasta que se duplique su tamaño ( de 1 a 2 horas). Presione la masa para formar en un gran pan redondo y agregue un botón redondo de harina en la parte superior. Coloque la masa sobre una bandeja para hornear, cúbrala con en la envoltura de plástico y deje que se eleve en un lugar caliente (1 hora o hasta que se duplique en tamaño). Hornee a la temperatura de 350 grados F (175 grados C) por un periodo de 35 a 45 minutos. Retírelo del horno, déjelo enfriar un poco para el glaseado. Como hacer el glaseado: en una cacerola pequeña, combine 1/4 de taza de azúcar, jugo de naranja y ralladura de naranja. Llevar a ebullición a fuego medio durante 2 minutos. Cubra la parte superior del pan con el glaseado mientras todavía está caliente. Espolvoree el pan con azúcar blanca como punto final. La Celebración del Dia de Muertos Esto segura que la mayoría de nosotros ya sabemos, que cada cultura tiene una manera única de enfrentar el dolor y la pérdida de un ser querido. Las comunidades Latinas y Hmong tienen celebraciones tradicionales específicas que utilizan para honrar a los que han fallecido. Tradicionalmente, el funeral es una de las ceremonias más importantes en la comunidad Hmong, porque es un período de en el que el alma del difunto debe regresar a su lugar de nacimiento y luego viajar para encontrarse con sus antepasados en el más allá. El proceso es muy complejo y puede durar de 3 a 12 días. La cultura latina generalmente ve la muerte de una manera muy diferente a los estadounidenses. Es una tradición ampliamente aceptada como parte de la vida y es algo que se habla incluso con niños pequeños. Razón por la cual no es de extrañar que este evento tradicional se utilice para honrar a los muertos en forma de una celebración de vida en lugar de muerte. El Dia de los Muertos o Day of the Dead, es una tradición mexicana que comienza desde el 31 de Octubre hasta 2 de Noviembre. Las familias visitan las tumbas de sus difuntos y las decorarán con flores, velas y calaveras de azúcar. Hay desfiles y fiestas por las calles y algunas familias hacen altares en sus casas con ofrendas para sus seres queridos que han fallecido. El propósito de estos altares es alentar la visita del alma de sus familiares y celebrar con ellos sus vivencias en la tierra. En los últimos años, especialmente en América, estos altares se han convertido en grandes celebraciones ricas en cultura y tradición y se considera hoy en día como un patrimonio Mexicano. Las dos culturas Latina y Hmong utilizan alimentos como ofrendas como parte de esta tradición. De la misma manera, la cultura estadounidense, utiliza los alimentos para unir a la familia. El Pan de Muertos es un elemento tradicionalmente ofrecido como parte de esta celebración cultural. Hemos incluido una receta de pan de muertos esperando que a través de este, logre encontrar un motivo para celebrar y recordar a sus seres queridos sin importar sus antecedentes culturales. 5 GRUPOS DE APOYO Mutual Support Groups Programa de Paternidad con Cariño Este grupo fue diseñado para ayudar a padres, abuelos y figuras paternas a desarrollar habilidades para la paternidad ya que esta ayuda a mejorar el crecimiento de los padres. Así como también cultivan y apoyan la esperanza que beneficia las relaciones familiares del hombre, la mujer y sus hijos. Duración de 12 semanas. The Nurturing Father s Program This group was designed to help parents, grandparents, and father figures develop their parenting skills as it enhances the growth and well being of men and children. Groups will cultivate and support hope that benefits the family relationships of men, women and their children. Duration of 12 weeks. Crianza con Cariño El programa está diseñado para capacitar a las personas y familias con nuevas conocimientos, creencias de vida, estrategias, y habilidades para para tomar estilos de vida buenos y saludables. Programa de corta duración de 5 a 18 sesiones, con certificación. Nurturing Parenting Program is designed to empower individuals and families with new knowledge, beliefs, strategies and skills to make good and healthy lifestyle choices. Short-term program of approximately 5 to 18 sessions. Participants receive a certificate at the end of the program. Autoestima para Mujeres Una buena autoestima nos brinda beneficios para nuestra salud y calidad de vida. Nos permite desarrollar la creatividad, mejorar nuestras capacidades personales para afrontar los problemas y las dificultades de la vida de una manera más eficaz. Este grupo esta enfocado en desarrollar un sistema de apoyo y conseguir mayor concentración mediante el uso de la música, la dieta, la luz, los ejercicios de relajamiento y en lograr un buen sueño nocturno para mejorar su autoestima y su bienestar personal. Women Self-Esteem A healthy self-esteem gives us benefits for our health and our quality of life. It allows us to develop creativity, enhance personal capacities, and face the problems and difficulties of life more effectively. This group will focus on developing a support system, getting more concentration through the use of music, diet, light, relaxation exercises and achieving a good night's sleep to improve their self-esteem and personal well-being. Plan de Empoderamiento Personal WRAP Habilidades para la vida y WRAP será una sesión de 16 semanas. Las primeras 8 semanas se centrarán en habilidades para la vida y las últimas 8 semanas trabajarán a través de WRAP. El Taller de Habilidades para la Vida enseña a los participantes las herramientas prácticas que necesitan para su independencia, una vida sana y la forma de prosperar en sociedad. Cada sesión los participantes expandirán su circulo social, aprenderán a cooperar, y a trabajo en equipo, desarrollando así confianza en sí mismos mientras se divierten. Life Skills Workshop WRAP Life skills and WRAP will be a 16 week session. The first 8 weeks will focus on Life skills and the last 8 weeks will work through the WRAP. Life Skills teaches participants the practical skills they need for independence, healthy living and how to thrive in society. Participants will meet new friends, learn new skills, cooperation, team work, and develop self-confidence while having fun. This group meets twice a month to explore their capacities to understand culture, abilities, and health differences as well as to celebrate variations within the participants.
