1 July 2017 PROMOTORES PositivaMente GEETINGS FROM PROMOTORES TEAM In July, the Promotores team will analyze the development of the groups and create new quality topics that are of interest to the communities in Chico, Gridley and Biggs. The theme of this month is the stress produced by being exposed to extreme temperatures. In the summer, many of our families work in the field or in extremely hot places and sometimes we do not notice how this can influence in our mental health. In the articles we make suggestions on how to stay hydrated and how to reduce the risks for those who are on psychotropic and other medications. In addition, this fiscal year Promotores is happy to introduce its new logo which represents the enrichment of both cultures Latino and Hmong. Our logo exemplifies family, unity, respect, and traditions portrayed by its colors, textiles, and other important items. 2 Heat Stress and Heat-Related Illness There are many factors which can cause heat stress and heat-related illness, including: Dehydration to keep healthy, our body temperature needs to stay around 37 C. The body cools itself by sweating, which normally accounts for 70 to 80 per cent of the body s heat loss. If a person becomes dehydrated, they don t sweat as much and their body temperature keeps rising. Lack of airflow working in hot, poorly ventilated or confined areas. Sun exposure especially on hot days, between 11am and 3pm. Hot and crowded conditions people attending large events (concerts, dance parties or sporting events) in hot or crowded conditions may also experience heat stress that can result in illness. Excessive Heat Exposure Can Pose Higher Risks for those on Psychotropic Medication or Other Substances During this period when parts of the nation are experiencing record high temperatures, SAMHSA is reminding everyone that these conditions can pose certain health risk to everyone including people with mental and substance use disorders. Exposure to excessive heat is dangerous and can lead to heatstroke which is considered a medical emergency. Heatstroke occurs when an abnormally elevated body temperature is unable to cool itself. Internal body temperatures can rise to levels that may cause irreversible brain damage and death. Individuals with behavioral health conditions who are taking psychotropic medications or using certain substances such as illicit drugs and alcohol may be at a higher risk for heatstroke and heat-related illnesses. These medications and substances can interfere with the body s ability to regulate heat and an individual s awareness that their body temperature is rising. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), effective methods to prevent heat exhaustion includes drinking plenty of fluids, replacing salt and minerals that may be removed from heavy sweating, wear loose light-colored clothing, wear sunscreen, stay cool indoors with air conditioning, and monitor those at high risk. For individuals who may be living in facilities, it is important that caretakers ensure that those individuals are well hydrated, have access to cooler areas, and have their temperature levels monitored especially for those individuals who may be taking antipsychotic and anticholinergic medications. 2 By:

3 Cómo afectan las altas temperaturas a la Salud Mental? Calor, no te soporto! Se han estudiado ampliamente los efectos de la temperatura ambiental en el cuerpo humano. Lo anterior, desde los comienzos de la historia, como parte de los conocimientos clásicos aplicados en Medicina. Ahora bien, en lo que respecta a la época estival y las altas temperaturas, se ha descubierto que éstas generan cierto estrés en el organismo. Esto ya que el cuerpo humano funciona de manera óptima entre los 36 y los 37,5º C. Por ende, en situaciones de calor extremo, el organismo comienza a luchar para poder enfriarse (lo cual puede dar lugar a espasmos musculares y un profundo agotamiento). De ahí que se haya definido que, en circunstancias más extremas, las temperaturas enormemente altas se relacionan con el incremento de la taza de mortalidad en la población. Como es de esperarse, la salud mental también puede verse afectada por las llamadas olas de calor. Normalmente, un calor moderado tendría un efecto positivo en Sin embargo, el alza extrema de las temperaturas podría provocar: Apatía, irritabilidad, mal humor, baja del rendimiento físico y psicológico, malestar general, menor capacidad de concentración y reacción, sensación de debilitamiento, aturdimiento y confusión; entre otros. Lo anterior, sobre todo en las personas consideradas más vulnerables que serían aquellas que padecen trastornos mentales a la base (depresión, ansiedad, estrés, etc.) u otras enfermedades. Además de niños y adultos mayores. Así como también cultivan y apoyan la esperanza que beneficia las relaciones familiares del hombre, la mujer y sus hijos. Duración de 12 semanas. The Nurturing Father s Program This group was designed to help parents, grandparents, and father figures develop their parenting skills as it enhances the growth and well being of men and children. Groups will cultivate and support hope that benefits the family relationships of men, women and their children. Duration of 12 weeks. Crianza con Cariño El programa está diseñado para capacitar a las personas y familias con nuevas conocimientos, creencias de vida, estrategias, y habilidades para para tomar estilos de vida buenos y saludables. Programa de corta duración de 5 a 18 sesiones, con certificación. Nurturing Parenting Program is designed to empower individuals and families with new knowledge, beliefs, strategies and skills to make good and healthy lifestyle choices. Short-term program of approximately 5 to 18 sessions. Participants receive a certificate at the end of the program. Women Self-Esteem A healthy self-esteem gives us benefits for our health and our quality of life. It allows us to develop creativity, enhance personal capacities, and face the problems and difficulties of life more effectively. This group will focus on developing a support system, getting more concentration through the use of music, diet, light, relaxation exercises and achieving a good night's sleep to improve their self-esteem and personal well-being. 5
