This legislation is scheduled to begin with the school year and impacts your child as a ninth grader. It means that as part of a student s health education instruction, the curriculum has changed. Your child will still be taught that abstinence until marriage is the expected standard and the only 100% method of ensuring he or she is not exposed to Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) or unwanted pregnancy. However, the curriculum has been expanded to include the following topics: 1. Effectiveness and safety of FDA-approved contraceptive methods in pregnancy prevention 2. Rates of infection of each known STD and effects of contracting STDs 3. Local resources for testing and medical care of STDs 4. Examination of common misconceptions and stereotypes about sexual abuse and sexual assault 5. Information on what constitutes sexual abuse, sexual assault, causes of these behaviors, and risk reduction strategies 6. Information on resources and reporting procedures for sexual abuse or assault The Catawba County Council on Adolescents will deliver this curriculum to all 9 th graders in Catawba County through a program entitled Relationships. The Council on Adolescents educators have special training in this area. These educators will emphasize healthy versus unhealthy relationships, consequences of sexual behavior, and rape/date rape. General Statute 115C 81 (e1) offers parents three curriculum choices for their child: 1. The new curriculum with information on STDs and contraceptive methods 2. The previous Abstinence Until Marriage curriculum 3. No curriculum related to high risk sexual behaviors or abstinence You must select one of these three options for your child. If you would like more information on the new Reproductive Health and Safety Education, copies of the curriculum are available at your child s high school, the Catawba County Administrative Offices, and the Catawba County Council on Adolescents. You may contact either Alice Whitener or Lisa Eaton from the Council on Adolescents at Once you have made a determination regarding which curriculum you wish your child to receive, please check the appropriate box, sign, and return the attached permission sheet to your child s health teacher. No child will be allowed to participate in the Reproductive Health and Safety Education curriculum unless a signed permission slip is on file at the school. Verbal permission via a phone call will not be accepted under any circumstances.
