2 Rector?s Column AN EXCITING LIFE If you w ere asked to nam e the top ten m ost exci ti ng occupati ons a person could have, bei ng a shepherd w ould probably not be on the li st. Perhaps the i dea of w anderi ng around all day tryi ng to m anage a bunch of sm elly sheep does not seem very exci ti ng. In the Gospel, w hen Jesus says he i s the good shepherd and then goes on to descri be w hat that m eans, thi s clearly i s m uch m ore than the seem i ngly m undane role of m anagi ng sheep (John 10:11-18). As i t turns out, the good shepherd that Jesus descri bes i s really a very exci ti ng person. Jesus, the Good Shepherd, lai d dow n hi s li fe for us. He di d not ri sk hi s li fe, he gave i t. He put w hat he m i ght have w anted asi de and took the ri sk of sacri fi ci ng hi m self hopi ng that i t w ould m atter. Thi s shepherd k now s hi s sheep and the sheep k now hi m. Jesus w ants a relati onshi p w i th us. He does not w ant to stay at a di stance. He w ants to truly k now us and for us to k now hi m, even at the ri sk that w e m i ght not understand hi m or reject hi m. Thi s shepherd has sheep that are not of hi s fold. The w orld of Jesus i s a bi g one. He i s w i lli ng to go beyond a ci rcle of com fortable relati onshi ps and i nclude those w i th w hom he i s less fam i li ar w i th all the aw k w ardness and even m essi ness i nvolved i n such an outreach. Thi s Good Shepherd show s us how w e can do som e exci ti ng thi ngs i n our li ves. Li ke m ak i ng sacri fi ces, gi vi ng up w hat w e m i ght w ant to do i n order to be present to som eone else. Gi vi ng up som e ti m e on the cell phone, i n front of the com puter or the televi si on to spend ti m e w i th our spouse, our chi ldren, our fri ends. Sacri fi ci ng the purchase of som ethi ng for ourselves and usi ng the m oney to support w ork that serves the poor. Tak i ng the ri sk of truly letti ng others k now us, even though w e m ay be m i sunderstood or rejected. Break i ng out of the confi nes of our ci rcle of com fortable relati onshi ps and openi ng our hearts and m i nds to those that are not so easy for us to i nclude. Serene pastures and bucoli c landscapes are not the w orld of the Good Shepherd. Thi s shepherd, i n the i m age of Pope Franci s, sm elled li ke the sheep because he w as ri ght i n the m i dst of all the com plexi ty and unti di ness of our hum ani ty. 4 Mensaje de Nuest ro Rector UNA VIDA EMOCIONANTE Si te hi ci eran la pregunta de nom brar cuales ocupaci ones u ofi ci os son los m ás em oci onantes que una persona pueda tener, tal vez ser un pastor no estaría en la li sta. Será porque la i dea de andar tras m uchas ovejas que huelen m al no suena com o algo em oci onante. En el Evangeli o, cuando Jesus di ce que él es el buen pastor y después pasa a descri bi r lo que realm ente si gni fi ca. Esto claram ente es m ucho m ás de lo aparentem ente es un si m ple m anejador de ovejas (Juan 10:11-18). Resulta ser que el buen pastor al cual se refi ere Jesus es una persona m uy em oci onante. Jesus, el Buen Pastor, di o su vi da por nosotros. No arri esgo su vi da por nosotros, si no que la di o. Puso a lado todo lo que él quería y tom o el ri esgo del sacri fi ci o con la esperanza que hi ci era algo si gni fi cati vo. El pastor conoce cada una de sus ovejas y las ovejas lo conocen a él. Jesus qui ere que tengam os una relaci ón con él. No qui ere perm anecer a una di stanci a de nosotros. Qui ere realm ente conocernos y que nosotros lo conozcam os a él. Aun sabi endo que tal vez no lo vam os a com prender o que lo rechacem os. El pastor ti ene ovejas que no son de su rebaño. El m undo de Jesus es grande. Él está di spuesto a aceptar a todos aun a los que no conoce. Este Buen Pastor nos enseña cóm o podem os hacer cosas em oci onantes en nuestras vi das. Com o, hacer sacri fi ci os, dejar de hacer algo que querem os hacer para poder estar presentes para otras personas. Dejar de usar el celular, dejar de ver la televi si ón para poder pasar ti em po con nuestros esposos/ esposas o nuestros am i gos. Hacer el sacri fi ci o de no com prar algo para nosotros y dar el di nero para el benefi ci o de los pobres. Dejar que otras personas realm ente nos conozcan, aun sabi endo que los pueden m ali nterpretar o rechazar. El sali rnos de nuestro ci rculo de com odi dades y abri rnos a nuevas relaci ones y dejar nuestro corazón abi erto a estas nuevas relaci ones no es fáci l. Fi les serenos y áreas rusti cas no son partes del m undo del Buen Pastor. El pastor, a la i m agen del Papa Franci sco, huele a sus ovejas porque él está allí con ellas en m edi o de todo lo com pli cado y el desorden de nuestra hum ani dad. Eso es lo que trajo nueva vi da. Eso es lo que trae nueva vi da. Eso es em oci onante.
