3 Week of April 23, 2017 Page Three El Pueblo Unido, Jamas Sera Vencido! This is a saying that we have heard many times before, but now more than ever, this saying gives me strength and hope. Our community s unity was recently exhibited when nearly 100 leaders gathered at the Back of the Yards High School to get trained on teaching others about their rights before ICE/the police and safety planning. We also saw this unity recently when leaders across the neighborhood came together at the Peace and Education High School to connect community residents to legal resources and help educate residents on their rights. At that event, many Holy Cross/IHM parishioners participated in different activities like welcoming guests, helping screen them for legal issues, connecting guests to attorneys, presenting Know Your Rights sessions, and providing information on social/emotional resources. Difficult times may be ahead, but when we come together, we give ourselves and others the gift of strength and hope. If you feel down, please know that there are many others that care about you, will walk with you, and will always fight alongside you. Estamos con Ustedes. El Pueblo Unido, Jamas Sera Vencido! El Rincón de la Esperanza "El Pueblo Unido, Jamás Sera Vencido." Este es un dicho que hemos escuchado varias veces, pero ahora más que nunca, este dicho me da fuerza y esperanza. La unidad de nuestra comunidad fue mostrada recientemente cuando casi 100 líderes se reunieron en la Secundaria Back of the Yards para ser entrenados a dar sesiones informativas sobre los derechos de los inmigrantes en este país (por ejemplo, derechos ante la policía e ICE y como construir un plan de seguridad). También vimos esta unidad recientemente cuando líderes del vecindario se reunieron en la Secundaria Paz y Educación para traer recursos legales a los residentes de la comunidad y ayudar a educarlos sobre sus derechos. En ese evento, muchos feligreses de nuestra parroquia participaron en diferentes actividades, incluyendo dando la bienvenida a los invitados, ayudar a detectar problemas legales, conectar a los residentes con abogados, presentar sesiones de "Conozca Sus Derechos," y proporcionar información sobre recursos sociales y emocionales. Sabemos que tiempos difíciles están por delante, pero cuando nos juntamos como comunidad, damos a nosotros ya los demás el don de la fuerza y la esperanza. We all have these rights when faced with ICE (Immigration): To not open the door of your house. To ask ICE to show you a court order SIGNED BY A JUD- GE, through a window, or to slip under the door (the order should have your name and correct address) To not allow ICE to enter your house if they do not have such an order To remain silent and not respond to questions. To not sign anything To have the opportunity to speak with a lawyer.

4 Week of April 23, 2017 YOUTH PAGE Page Four Some of you are wondering about the Peace and Education Scholarship application yes, it is now available! Check on the parish website to find it or stop in the parish office for a hard copy. It is due on May 12 Who has gotten the scholarship in the past? At this year s fundraiser, the Peace and Education Coalition will honor Priscila González, who grew up on Marshfield and works at Second Chance (PEC) High School; Saraí Jiménez (1st grade teacher at Seward, catechist and minister at the 10:30 am mass); and Elizabeth Sauceda, who works at Seward and coordinates the Girl Scout troops here at Holy Cross-IHM. All are still active in the community, all gave significant volunteer service during their college years which is the main requirement to qualify for this scholarship! And here is another scholarship possibility for students of our community. APPLICATIONS for the Fr. George Ruffolo Scholarship are now available. Visit their website www. revgruffoloscholarships.com or their FB page: Rev. George Ruffolo Memorial Scholarship Foundation to download the application. Do it today, it is a long application, and due by May 31. Just Work It! APPLICATIONS FOR SUMMER JOBS for youth ages are now being taken on-line Until May 15 Best thing yet? You don t even need a Social Security Number to apply! But before you finish your application, go around to the schools, parks, and other businesses and agencies around you, and see if they are hiring through this program, and let them know you are interested in working with them, and make sure they know your name and make sure you indicate their organization when you apply!!! And, in case you think, What s the point, there aren t enough jobs to go around? Well, you have NO chance of being hired if you don t apply! In the year 2000, the Church decided that the Second Sunday of Easter would each year be known as Divine Mercy Sunday. This was in part due to the devotion of a European Sister, St. Faustina, but also because we recognize the love God shows us through the Resurrection. Mercy is something hard to get in touch with sometimes. We feel like we are not worthy. We look around at our world and see the horrors in so many places and we wonder where is God? The Jubilee Year of Mercy which ended on November 26, 2016, reminded us of the countless times Jesus showed mercy to others, no matter what their background, and that it is up to us, as Followers of Jesus, to live that same way. Take some time this week to reflect: Who is a person in your life that seems most in need of God s Mercy? What can you do for him or her to help them understand that they live in a community of faith that loves and forgives one another?

Las clases de Coser y Tejer tuvieron un comienzo muy exitoso. Tuvimos 17 personas que vinieron a aprender. Parte de la misión de este grupo es de hacer una cobija o shawl para dar a personas/familias enfermas de nuestra comunidad. Es un gran ministerio que les dará consuelo a personas que están pasando por momentos difíciles. La cobija o shawl será bendecida y una oración se hará sobre ella para que acompañe a las familias. La segunda misión de este grupo es un tiempo de reunión en familia para todas las que asistan. Le damos nuestro agradecimiento a la Sra. Maria Fons dueña de Mercería Maria, por donarnos estambre. Por favor les pedimos a nuestros feligreses que apoyen a la Sra. Maria Fons en su negocio como ella nos apoya en la parroquia.
