2 Page Two 19TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME AUGUST 9, 2015 SAYING AND SAYINGS There are sayings and sayings. I am an immigrant from Ecuador and English is my second language. I had to learn some sayings in English such as: Out of sight, out of mind or The apple doesn't fall far from the tree. I have heard many sayings these years; some of them good and others that made me want to run away. I remember one time when I didn t know English well and had to go to the pharmacy to buy medicine. I approached the clerk and with broken English I asked her: Do you speak Spanish? She looked at me with disdain and more or less I understood that she was saying to me: It s stupid that you are here in the United States and don t speak English. I also learned that day what wetback meant. There are saying and sayings. My best friend lost his father a few months ago. I can imagine him hearing those hard words: Your father has died. His gather died in Ecuador and my friend could not be there for his father s last breath. I can imagine the pain and the mixed emotions my friend may be still experiencing. Many of the disciples of Jesus perhaps felt the same way. That s why they said: This is a hard saying; who can hear it? (John 6:60). Some people actually walked away. When we hear things that are hard or that we don t expect or we don t want to hear, our peace is threatened. There are sayings and there are sayings; and we are not immune to them, because they are inevitable. What is not inevitable is how we react to these hard sayings. Look at Peter s response to Jesus: We have com to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God. (John 6:68). Today, Peter shows us how to react to hard sayings: ad that is, by recognizing the truth. There is a truth about us that is stronger than all hard sayings coming our way. There is a truth that sustains us while we are bombarded by the kamikazes of misunderstanding, loss, death, illness, frustration, despair, discrimination, heartbreaking This truth pulls us out from the mud of harshness to a place of meaning and belonging. We are children of God; we are God s people and He has marked us as God s very own. This is the truth that sets us free. So, when hard sayings come our way, let us not return to our former ways, but let us move forward guided by truth that underlines our existence. Let us remember the brave single mothers that strive to raise their children. Let us remember John XXIII, Oscar Romero; they held on to the ultimate truth and, above all, they truly believed and were truly convinced that Jesus is the Holy One of God and we all have seen the fruits of their efforts since no sacrifice is in vain. Yo soy un inmigrante de Ecuador y el inglés es mi segundo idioma. Tuve que aprender los dichos en inglés, tales como: Ojos que no ve, corazón que no siente o De tal palo, tal astilla. He escuchado muchos dichos estos años; algunos buenos y otros que me han dado ganas de correr. Recuerdo una vez cuan aún no sabía bien inglés y tuve que ir a la farmacia a comprar medicinas. Me acerqué a la cajera y con mi inglés chapurrado le pregunté: Habla español? Me miró con desdén y más o menos entendí que me decía: Es estúpido es estés aquí en Estados Unidos y no hables inglés. También ese día aprendí lo que wetback (espalda mojada) significaba. Hay dichos y hay dichos. Mi mejor amigo perdió su padre hace algunos meses. Me lo imagino escuchando esas duras palabras: Tu padre ha muerto. Su papá murió en Ecuador y mi amigo no pudo estar allí para el último respiro de su padre. Me puedo imaginar el dolor y las emociones encontradas que mi amigo debe estar sintiendo aún. Muchos de los discípulos de Jesús quizá se sintieron así. Es por eso que dijeron: Estas palabras son muy duras; quien las puede aceptar? (Juan 6:60). De hecho muchos se fueron. Cuando oímos cosas duras o que no queremos o no esperamos escuchar, nuestra paz se ve amenazada. Hay palabras y hay palabras; y no somos inmunes a ellas ya que son inevitables. Lo que no es inevitable es como reaccionamos a estas palabras duras. Miren lo que Pedro responde a Jesús: Nosotros ya hemos creído, y sabemos que tú eres el Santo de Dios (Juan 6:68). Hoy, Pedro nos muestra cómo reaccionar a dichos duros: el reconocer la verdad. Hay una verdad sobre nosotros que es más fuerte que todas las palabras duras que nos puedan llegar. Hay una verdad que nos sostiene mientras somos bombardeados por los kamikazes del malentendido, la perdida, muerte, enfermedad, frustración, desesperación, discriminación, ruptura del corazón Esta verdad nos saca del lodo de la dureza a un lugar de significado y pertenencia. Somos hijos de Dios; somos el pueblo de Dios y Dios nos ha marcado como suyos. Esta es la verdad que nos hace libres. Así que, cuando los dichos duros nos lleguen, no nos retraigamos sino que sigamos adelante guiados por la verdad que es la base de nuestra existencia. Recordemos el ejemplo de Pedro y los discípulos. Recordemos a las valientes madres solteras que luchan por criar a sus hijos. Recordemos a Juan XXIII y Oscar Romero; ellos se agarraron de esta verdad y sobre todo, creyeron de verdad y estuvieron convencidos de verdad que Jesús es el Santo de Dios y todos hemos visto los frutos de sus esfuerzos ya que no hay sacrificio en vano.
