2 PASTORS CORNER Mass is ALWAYS Exciting! It was the first day of classes at the Catholic University, Boston College. So the lecture hall for Professor Thomas Groome s class, Introduction to Catholic Theology was filled with about 80 anxious freshman. He opened the class with a question, How many of you believe that the Eucharist is the real presence of Christ? Now...every Catholic student at a Catholic University in a Catholic theology class know the right answer. Every hand went up. Professor Groome asked a second question. How many of you were at mass yesterday? This time only a few students raised their hands. Professor Groome followed with a final question, If you really believe that Christ is truly present at every mass, how could you not be there? Allow me to reframe the question. If you really believe that Christ is present at every mass, how could mass be boring? I realize that since you're reading this in the Church bulletin, odds are that you not only believe in the Real Presence, but you were also at mass. I know that I m preaching to the choir. Remember, in the Catholic tradition, the role of the choir is not to sing for the people but the choir is supposed to help the people sing. Let me give you a couple of tools so you can help people sing. The Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, promulgated in 1963 at the Second Vatican Council states that the Real Presence of Christ at mass is manifested in the Eucharist-once it s been consecrated, in the priest-when he is celebrating a Sacrament (in persona Christi), in the Scriptures-when it s proclaimed at mass, and in the people-then they stand together, work together, and pray together at mass. So the next time someone complains that mass is boring ask them, How could it be boring if Christ is there? Think about how powerful mass becomes, of how much we can accomplish to build the Kingdom of God if we all sing...because Christ is here! 3 SU PALABRA EN ESPAÑOL La Misa SIEMPRE es emocionante! Era el primer día de clases en la Universidad Católica en Boston. Así que la sala de conferencias para la clase del profesor Thomas Groome, Introducción a la Teología Católica se llenó con cerca de 80 ansiosos estudiante en su primer año. 4 St. Anthony s Annual Our Lady of Guadalupe Celebrations You are invited to join in the annual celebration of Our Lady of Guadalupe on Friday, December 12th. The festivities begin at 5:00 a.m. with traditional Mañanitas, in honor of the Blessed Mother. Mass will begin at 6:00 a.m. and all are invited to Menudo for breakfast in the gymnasium. If you can not join the morning festivities, there will also be another Mass at 5:00 p.m. followed by dinner and entertainment in the gymnasiam. All food is free of cost, due to the fundraiseing that takes place throughout the year in preperation for this event. Please note that 7:00 a.m. daily Mass will be canceled due to the celebration.we hope to see you there! Holy Land Religious Goods On the weekend of November 29-30, a group from the Holy Land (Bethlehem & Jerusalem) will be selling religious articles after Masses to support the Catholic Christian minorities in Bethlehem. As a tradition, many of the Catholic families in the Holy Land work in small workshops to produce religious articles from olive wood. In the past, they used to sell their artwork to pilgrims who visit the Holy Land. However, these days they are facing an economic hardship as very few tourists visit the Holy Land due to security issues. Many of the Catholic families immigrated and left the Holy Land. The percentage of Christians in the Holy Land has dropped to less than 2%. The struggles to preserve the Catholic identity of the birthplace of our savior Jesus Christ is a serious concern for Catholics around the world. Sales will be used to help and support the Catholics in the Holy Land and to encourage them not to immigrate. Sister Ann s Corner Senior Reconciliation and Anointing Service Seniors, Sister Ann would like invite you all to a special Reconciliation and Anointing Service on Thursday, December 11th at 3:30 p.m. in the Church. You can choose to participate in one or both. Senior Christmas Luncheon Sr. Ann & The Ministry of Caring are having a Senior Christmas Luncheon on Thursday, December 18th from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm in St. Anthony s Gym. Watch! This word occurs three times in today s Gospel passage. Moreover, it is placed at significant points: the beginning, the center, and the end. Though this is technically a parable, it is quite short (four verses). The threefold repetition of watch leaves no doubt as to what the story is about. We often think of Advent as a time of waiting, but it truly is a season of watchfulness, a very active form of waiting for the coming Day of the Lord. It is that day, more than Christmas day, that the Christian community faithfully expects, using all of our gifts and talents for this purpose, as Paul reminds us in the Letter to the Corinthians. When we use these gifts in faithful watching and expectation, we become like the servants of the parable, set to their tasks, not waiting around idly, but engaged in the master s work until his return. May our Advent be a time when we return or rededicate our lives and our communities to this work the active and diligent faithfulness that the Lord will expect to find.
