2 by Zachary Lambert Build Background Read the title to children, and tell them that the month of July is in the summer when school is out. Have them tell what they know about summer weather. Use the cover photograph to point out that children like to eat cold treats like ice cream during the hot summer days. Then ask: Qué hace la gente para refrescarse en julio? Qué les gusta hacer a ustedes en julio? Introduce the Text Guide children through the text, helping with unfamiliar words so that they can read the text successfully. Point out the sentence pattern repeated on each page: Vente a conmigo. Here are some suggestions: Page 2: Explain that this book shows people having fun in July. On every page, the children in the picture tell what they like to do. Suggested language: Vayan a la página 2. Dónde están los niños? Uno de los niños dice: Vente a nadar conmigo. Digan vente. July is a summer month, when the days are hot and sunny. People like to do outdoor activities in July. On hot days, people like to do things in or near water to stay cool. The writer wants to show how much fun it is to be outdoors in July. The photos show the different activities. The writer uses the same words on each page Fountas, I.C. & Pinnell, G.S. Choices for Support Concepts of Print Give children practice with early reading behaviors, such as reading from left to right and pointing under each word. Phonemic Awareness and Word Work Provide practice as needed with words and sounds, using one of the following activities: Listening Game Say a pair of rhyming words. Have children raise their hands if the words rhyme and keep their hands in their laps if the words do not rhyme. Word pairs to use: vente/gente; nadar/montar; navegar/velero; cavar/arena; comer/beber; helado/ llamado; navegar/velero. ABC Materials: magnetic or cardboard letters or letter cards. Have children choose letters and put them in ABC order. Tracing Letters Materials: magnetic or cardboard letters or letter cards. 4 Writing About Reading Vocabulary Practice Read the directions and have children complete the Vocabulario questions on Hoja reproducible Responding Have children complete the vocabulary activities on page 7. Building Vocabulary Action Words Build on the action words in. Have children look at the photo on page 2 and talk about water-related activities. As children suggest water activities, write their words on the board or chart paper. Begin the list with the words: Vente a.
