A Message From Fr. Roberto Wake up to trusting Jesus - Wake up to being curious about Jesus - Wake up to being open to Jesus - Wake up to seeking Jesus - Wake up to being Jesus disciple Ash Wednesday Schedule of Services The schedule of services at Holy Rosary for Ash Wednesday is as follows: 8:00 a.m. Mass 10:00 a.m. Mass 5:30 p.m. Mass in English in the church (Spanish service in the gymnasium) 7:30 p.m. Service in English in the gymnasium (Mass in Spanish in the church) Lent - Why do we receive ashes? The imposition of ashes is an ancient symbol of repentance and mourning (see Isaiah 58:5; Esther 4:1; Daniel 9:3; 2Samuel 13:19), and reminds us that our life on earth is fleeting and that our ultimate life is in heaven. Lent begins with Ash Wednesday and is a time of prayer, penance and fasting. Forty days that the Church sets before us for conversion of heart. The words used for the imposition of ashes, are: "Remember you are dust and to dust you shall return" or Repent and believe in the Gospel." Both of these are powerful statements of faith and are reminders of what our priorities in this life should be. Receiving ashes is not a magical rite, and does not take away our sins; for that we have the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Rather, it is a sign of repentance, penance, and, above all, conversion. It is the beginning of the Lenten journey, to follow Jesus from the desert to the day of his triumph on Easter Sunday. Lenten Guidelines for Fasting and Abstinence Ash Wednesday: This day is observed by abstinence from meat and fasting (see guidelines below). Fridays in Lent: These days are marked by abstinence from meat. Good Friday: This is also a day of abstinence from meat and fasting. Fasting and Abstinence Those who are 18 to 59 years old are bound by the obligation to fast and may take only one full meal. Two smaller meals are permitted if necessary to maintain strength according to one's needs, but eating solid foods between meals is not permitted. Abstinence from meat is for those 14 to 59 years old. Traditional abstinence is the practice of refraining from meat and meat products. Entering fully into the spirit of the Lenten fast, we are also encouraged to abstain from other foods, practices or activities. The Lenten fast is one of penance. Our self-denial is a way of emphasizing our dependence on God. Those under the age of 14 or over 59 Fasting and abstinence are not always possible for the younger members of the community. However, they should be encouraged to observe the spirit of the Lenten fast by assuming a penance appropriate to their age. Those who have celebrated their 59th birthday are welcome to share with the community in the practice of fasting. However, they should take appropriate care regarding their personal health conditions. Why We Fast and Abstain When we fast and abstain, we do it together. The practice of the Lenten fast is a practice of the whole community. Though the fast is carried out personally, we are united http://jesuitinstitute.org/pictures/lent.gif in our action through Jesus Christ. Our united fast and abstinence are our prayers to the Father through Jesus. Our actions speak louder than our words. Both personally and as a community we deliberately place ourselves in need (hunger being the most basic need) so that we can discover that for which we hunger spiritually in our lives and in our world. We do this to give concrete expression to our trust in God to give us the spiritual sustenance we require. Our joint action is intended to strengthen our deep belief that the God who raised Jesus from the dead also fills our every need. Bible Sale Are you in need of a new Bible or would you like to buy one for someone as a gift for First Communion or for Lent? Then come and see the Bibles we will have for sale next weekend Reading God s word is a must for us as Catholics!

Holy Rosary Church Annual Men s Retreat Saturday, March 22nd 9:00am in the Parish Center 2014 Retreat Master: Brother Daniel Thomas, O.P. A native of Oakland, California Br. Daniel Thomas has been a Dominican for more than 50 years and, as a career brother has a long list of works and ministries that he has been involved in. He was originally trained as a printer until the technology began changing with the advent of photo and computer typesetting. From there he moved into Campus and Parish Ministry His love of the Liturgy and his talents for public speaking, art and music saw him involved in giving workshops for parishes and other groups both locally and internationally. One of those invitations came from Africa where he gave about 15 workshops and talks in Kenya and Tanzania in 2001. The talks must have been successful since the Dominicans invited him to return for a more permanent assignment. So, after having been the director of a retreat house in Oregon for 15 years, it was an opportune invitation that he was allowed to accept. He ministered at a newly established Dominican Parish in Nairobi from 2005 to 2013 where he was still able to give talks and workshops in various parts of East Africa. He is now assigned and stationed at St. Dominic s Parish in San Francisco where he is still involved in various talks and presentations on Liturgy, Art, Prayer and public speaking.

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul THANKS YOU! The Society of St. Vincent de Paul wishes to thank all of the parishioners for their generosity with the Souper Bowl Collection. Slightly over $1,300 was collected In 2013 the Society handed out 1537 bags of food to 489 different families. This does not include the 200 turkeys and food baskets that were given out at Christmas and the 150 that were given out at Thanksgiving While we allow families to come to our food pantry once a month, 40% of the families only came once last year and 75% came four times or less. These are the people that have a run of bad luck, but with a helping hand get back on their feet and no longer need us. 10% came eight or more times. They are primarily the elderly and people with disabilities who are living on very small fixed income and just barely manage to get by each month. Thank you for your continued support! Dominican School of Philosophy & Theology 24th Annual Aquinas Lecture Hatred in the Light of Love: A Thomistic Analysis with Diana Fritz-Cates, PhD Hatred is widely regarded as a problem for human beings and their societies. But what is hatred? How is it best conceived? Does hatred, in any of its forms, have a place in a good human life? This lecture will present a conceptual and ethical analysis of hatred that has its basis in the moral psychology of St. Thomas Aquinas.
