Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time October 5, 2014 THE THEME TODAY IS THE FRUITLESS VINEYARD The Old Testament tells us that God cared for his people as a good gardener cares for his vineyard, yet they failed to produce the desired fruits. We are the new people of God, the vineyard planted and cared for by Christ. God looks to us to produce the fruits of justice, holiness, and peace. Isaiah 5:1-7. Israel is compared to a well cared for vineyard which fails to produce fruit. Philippian 4:6-9. Saint Paul warns the converts at Philippi against anxiety, and advises them as to how they should live in order to enjoy the peace of God. Matthew 21:33-43. The parable of the wicked vine-dressers tells of God s goodness to his people, and of their failure to respond in kind. History is littered with stories of good tenants and wicked landlords. In the Gospel we have a story of wicked tenants and a good landlord. The parable is an allegory of God s dealings with his people. The landowner is God. The vineyard is Israel, the wicked tenants are the people of Israel, but more especially the religious leaders who had been given charge of the vineyard by God. The servants are the prophets sent by God and so often rejected and killed. The son is Jesus himself, whom they killed. Like the parable of the two sons, this parable was directed at the chief priests and elders. It was meant as a warning, but it went unheeded. The tenants came to a bad end. Jerusalem was destroyed, and the Gentiles replaced the Jews as God s people. All this would have been clear to Matthew s readers. In Jesus parable of the vineyard a lot of ugly things happen. But evil does not have the last say; in the end, good triumphs. This shows us that there is only one way to overcome evil, and that is with good. Jesus didn t answer evil with more evil. He triumphed over evil by good. If we do what we can and put our trust in God, then Paul assures us that the peace of God, which is so much greater than we can understand, will guard our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. Peace does not come only when life is easy and tranquil. We can have peace even in the midst of struggle and turmoil, as long as we are on the side of God. He is the God of peace, and is always with us. EL TEMA DE HOY ES EL VIÑEDO INFRUCTUOSOS El Antiguo Testamento nos dice que Dios se preocupaba por su pueblo como un buen jardinero cuida de su viña, sin embargo, no logró producir los frutos deseados. Si hacemos lo que podemos y poner nuestra confianza en Dios, entonces Pablo nos asegura que la paz de Dios, que es mucho más grande de lo que podemos entender, guardará nuestros corazones y vuestros pensamientos en Cristo Jesús. La paz no llega sólo cuando la vida es fácil y tranquila. Podemos tener paz aun en medio de la lucha y turbulencias, mientras nosotros estamos del lado de Dios. Él es el Dios de la paz, y siempre está con nosotros.. 2

Vigésimo séptimo Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario 5 de octubre de 2014 FROM MY HEART (not from my Desk) I would like to continue expressing my gratitude to all of the parishioners of Saint Joseph Church. Today, in a special way, I would like to say THANK YOU to the organizers, volunteers and attendees at St. Joseph Church s 9 th Annual Ed Thaete Classic Golf and Dinner Event held on Monday September 22, 2014. My deepest thanks to Mr. Ed Theate for his countless years of service in this community, and for helping us in many ways. Also, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to Tom and Connie Linnert, Emily Martinez, Betty Spanel, Rene and Mary Guzman, Lupita Chavez, Nive Brown, Sofia Talavu, Lili Linnert, Gilbert Zamora, Bob Thaete and all the families that participated in this fun and fundraising event. Sharing their gifts of time and talent represent the true spirit of stewardship in our community. This year's Ed Thaete Classic (ETC) Event raised over $9,000.00 for our parish. My second highlight of this week is for all the parents of the seventh grade students at Saint Joseph School who participated in Cafe San Jose, last weekend. Their time, talent and treasure helps our entire community and is a very positive sign of their love in action. Thank you all, for your generosity and support.
