6 RESUMEN Debido al acelerado y constante crecimiento de la población en el mundo, se ha observado un aumento igual o mayor con respecto a la producción de alimentos, en parte debido a que los países con las más altas temperaturas climáticas, localizados en los trópicos y sub-trópicos, no producen suficiente cantidad de alimentos para satisfacer sus propias necesidades, aun cuando, esta región reúne aproximadamente el 50% de la tierra arable en el mundo (Alfredo N. García Gavidia, 2002). En la actualidad se busca el aumento de producción, con el fin de satisfacer las necesidades constantes de la población mundial, y para ello se han implementado nuevas biotecnologías, entre las cuales, está el uso de la Somatotropina (STb), la cual, es una hormona de crecimiento artificial que se suministra a las vacas por inyección, con el fin de aumentar la producción de leche, muchos trabajos han demostrado el beneficio en la aplicación de STb en vacas lecheras como lo es principalmente el aumento de la producción. La Hormona del crecimiento o STb es una proteína producida por la glándula pituitaria de los animales, la cual, es un factor endocrino importante para el crecimiento normal y la lactancia de los mamíferos. La STb bovina recombinante es una proteína altamente compleja, la cual, consiste de 190 ó 191 aminoácidos (Wood et al., 1989). El mecanismo de acción de la STb envuelve una serie de cambios orquestados en el metabolismo de los tejidos del cuerpo de la vaca, de tal manera que más nutrientes pueden ser usados en la síntesis de leche. En la glándula mamaria se produce un aumento de la síntesis láctea debido a una mayor captación de los nutrientes utilizados para su secreción y a un aumento en la actividad secretora de las células y la perfusión sanguínea (Bauman 1992, Bauman y Vernon 1993, Prado et al., 2003). No obstante, la magnitud del incremento en la producción como respuesta a la administración de STb está influenciada por factores internos y externos, como son la temperatura ambiente, el manejo general del rebaño, el período de lactancia, el potencial genético y la cantidad de leche producida (Bauman 1992, Prado et al., 2003). La administración de STb a vacas lecheras lactantes aumenta la producción y la eficiencia en la producción de leche. Después de la inyección de STb, la secreción de leche aumenta en el primer día y alcanza su máximo en la primera semana. Una producción de leche elevada se mantiene mientras el tratamiento continúa, este consiste en la aplicación de STb cada 14 días a partir del día 60 de la lactancia, pero rápidamente regresa al nivel del control cuando se retira el tratamiento. La STb aumenta la producción de leche de 4 a 6 kg/d, equivalente a un 10 a 15% (Arkes, 2006).

8 ABSTRACT Due to the rapid and steady growth of the population in the world, there has been an increase equal to or greater than for food production, in part because countries with higher climatic temperatures, located in the tropics and sub- tropics, do not produce enough food to meet their own needs, even though this region meets about 50% of the arable land in the world (Alfredo N. García Gavidia, 2002). Currently searching for the increase in production to meet the continuing needs of the global population, and for that we have implemented new biotechnologies, among which is the use of somatotropin (bst), which is artificial growth hormone supplied to cows by injection, in order to increase milk production, many studies have shown benefit in the application of bst in dairy cows is mainly as increased production. Or growth hormone is bst protein produced by the pituitary gland of animals which is an important endocrine factor for normal growth and lactation in mammals. The recombinant bovine STb highly complex is a protein which consists of 190 or 191 amino acids (Wood et al., 1989). The mechanism of action involves STb orchestrated series of changes in metabolism of body tissues of the cow, so that more nutrients can be used for milk synthesis. In the mammary gland occurs milk increased synthesis due to increased uptake of the nutrients used for secretion and increased secretory activity of the cells and the blood perfusion (Bauman 1992, Bauman and Vernon 1993, Prado et al 2003). However, the magnitude of the increase in production in response to bst administration is influenced by internal and external factors such as ambient temperature, the overall management of the herd, lactation period, the genetic potential and the amount of milk produced (Bauman 1992, Prado et al 2003). STb administration to lactating dairy cows increases production efficiency and milk production. After injection of bst, the secretion of milk increases during the first days and reaches its maximum in the first week. A high milk production is maintained while treatment continues, this is the application of bst every 14 days from day 60 of lactation, but quickly returned to control levels when treatment is withdrawn. BST increases milk production of 4-6 kg / d, equivalent to 10-15% (Arkes, 2006). The present study aims to make a theoretical review of the use of BST and its implications in bovine milk production.
