3 Page 3 A Gospel reflection by Deacon Mark Ruiz Accepting the Truth The freedom of Christ's Kingdom is an interior freedom, a peace and strength of soul that only his grace can give us. If up to now we haven't experienced it as deeply as we would like, maybe that s because we haven't fully accepted this truth, that God is love. Fully accepting that truth, which Pilate refused to do, involves at least three things. First, it means accepting it freshly every single day. Each day we remain free to decide how we will live, and so, each day we have to reaffirm our citizenship in his Kingdom, or else we will slowly drift away from him. Second, accepting the truth that God is love means admitting that we need God. If we try to achieve perfect happiness by our own efforts, we will shut ourselves off from God's love. The most direct way to admit that we need God, to allow his love to be a part of our lives, is to come regularly to the sacrament of reconciliation. There is simply no better way to acknowledge his Kingship over our lives, and to acknowledge that the law of his Kingdom is mercy. Third, accepting the truth that God is love means striving in our daily lives to love as God loves. St Paul summarized all the laws of Christ's Kingdom in one: love your neighbor as yourself (Romans 13:9). When we refuse to forgive, to serve, to treat others as we would have them treat us, we distance ourselves from the God who is love, refusing to accept his friendship. Let's thank him for bringing us the truth that will set us free, and let's ask humbly for the grace to accept that truth, that God is love, every single day of our lives. Advent starts, Sunday December 2nd- Beginning the Church's liturgical year, Advent (from, "ad-venire" in Latin or "to come to") is the season encompassing the four Sundays (and weekdays) leading up to the celebration of Christmas. The Advent season is a time of preparation that directs our hearts and minds to Christ s second coming at the end of time and also to the anniversary of the Lord s birth on Christmas. The final days of Advent, from December 17 to December 24, focus particularly on our preparation for the celebrations of the Nativity of our Lord (Christmas). If you are interested please call the store at According to the General Instruction of the Roman Missal and canon law, in the Roman Catholic Church, bread for the Eucharist must be made with unleavened wheat flour. Wheat flour contains gluten. A Mayo Clinic-led analysis published in 2012 estimates that roughly 1.8 million Americans have Celiac disease or gluten intolerance and many are unaware of it. Because of the serious health risk to several of our parishioners, both St. Joseph and St. Teresa Parishes now provide Vatican-approved, low gluten altar bread with a gluten content of less than.01% If you or anyone with a gluten intolerance condition would like to receive a low gluten host during communion, please notify the Sacristan or Fr. Cesar prior to each Mass. Si hasta ahora nosotros no hemos experimentado tan profundamente como nos gustaría, quizás es porque nosotros no hemos aceptado completamente esta verdad, que Dios es amor. Aceptar plenamente la verdad, que Pilato se negó a hacer, implica al menos tres cosas. En primer lugar, que significa recién aceptarla todos los días. Cada día nos quedan libres para decidir cómo vamos a vivir y por lo tanto, cada día tenemos que reafirmar nuestra ciudadanía en su reino, o bien lentamente se deriva de él. En segundo lugar, aceptar la verdad de que Dios es amor significa admi r que necesitamos a Dios. Si tratamos de alcanzar la felicidad perfecta por nuestros propios esfuerzos, nosotros mismos estaremos apartando del amor de Dios. El camino más directo para admi r que necesitamos a Dios, para permi r que su amor sea parte de nuestras vidas, es de venir con regularidad al Sacramento de la reconciliación (que es la confesión de nuestros pecados) esto significa estar en Gracia con Dios y para poder comulgar (Recibir el Cuerpo de Cristo). Simplemente no hay mejor manera de reconocer su majestuosidad sobre nuestras vidas y reconocer que la ley de su Reino es Misericordia. En tercer lugar, aceptar la verdad que Dios es amor en nuestra vida co diana para amar como Dios ama. San Pablo resumió todas las leyes del Reino de Cristo en una: Amarás a tu prójimo como a mismo (Romanos 13:9). Cuando nos negamos a perdonar, a servir, a tratar a los demás como nos gustaría que nos traten, nos distanciamos de Dios que es amor, negándose a aceptar su amistad. Vamos a darle las gracias por traernos la verdad que nos libera, Y vamos a pedir humildemente la gracia de aceptar esa verdad, que Dios es amor, todos los días de nuestras vidas. WALKING WITH JESUS ALL THE DAYS OF OUR LIVES INSIGHTS FROM THE GOSPEL OF ST. LUKE In this Season of Advent, we rededicate ourselves to giving birth to Jesus in everything we say and do. Our Parish Advent Mission Retreat celebrates, in a joyful way, what it means to have Jesus walk with us in all the affairs of our everyday lives. We will take our inspiration from the Gospel of St. Luke paying close attention to the Birth of Jesus proclaimed in Luke 1 and 2. While the Mission has a common theme, each part stands alone so individuals are free and welcome to attend and participate as their schedules permit. The morning and evening sessions are different offering a variety of approaches. I will also be available for individual meetings throughout the time of the Mission.
