Much, many and a lot. Much, many, a lot: "Much", "many", and "a lot of" indicate a large quantity of something, for example "I have a lot of friends " means I have a large quantity of friends. Much, many, and a lot are quantifiers.
Study the examples below: How much money have you got? I haven't got much money. I have got a lot. I have got a lot of money. How many students are in the classroom? There aren't many. There are a lot. There are a lot of/lots of students. In the interrogative forms we use: In the negative forms we use: In the affirmative forms: much with uncountable nouns. (money, bread, water...) Example: How much money/bread/water...is there? many with countable nouns. (students, desks, windows...) Example: How many students/teachers/desks... are there? much with uncountable nouns. (money, bread, water...) Example: I haven't got much money/bread/water... many with countable nouns. (students, desks, windows...) Example: There aren't many students/teachers/desks... In spoken English and informal writing we tend to use: a lot, a lot of, lots of with countable and uncountable nouns. Example: "How many students are there in the classroom?" "There are a lot."
"How many students are there in the classroom?" "There are a lot of / lots of students".. In formal written English: It is also possible (and preferable) to use many and much rather than a lot of, lots of and a lot in formalwritten English. Example: There are many students. Much time was spent on studying. So if you're speaking or writing to friends (informal), use a lot, a lot of, lots of. But if you want to be moreformal, perhaps it is preferable to use much and many. Remember: In affirmative sentences with so, as or too, we also use much / many. Examples: "Carla has so many friends." "She has as many friends as Sue." "Kevin has too much money."
Interrogative Negative Affirmative How many books are there? There aren't many. There are a lot. There are a lot of books. There are lots of books. There are many books (formal) How much money have you got? I haven't got much. I've got a lot. I've got a lot of money. I've got lots of money. I have got much money (formal) Exercises
A LOT OF, A LITTLE, A FEW
A LOT OF /LOTS OF Significado: Mucho Uso: Expresan idea de gran cantidad. Se puede usar con nombres o sustantivos contables e incontables. A diferencia de "many" y "much", no las usamos en frases interrogativas. En general, "lots of" es más informal. Ejemplos: Nombre contable: He has a lot of books. (Tiene muchos libros.) Nombre contable: He does not have a lot of books. (No tiene muchos libros.) Nombre incontable: I have lots of money. (Tengo mucho dinero.) Nombre incontable: LITTLE/A LITTLE Significado: Poco/s Uso: Expresan una cantidad pequeña y se usan sólo con nombres incontables. La opción de usar "little" o "a little" refleja una opinión sobre la cantidad. Si usas "a little", significa una opinión positiva sobre la cantidad y si usas "little" implica una opinión negativa. Ejemplos: Frase interrogativa: Do you have a little money? ( Tienes un poco de dinero?) Frase afirmativa: We have little time. (Tenemos poco tiempo.)
FEW/A FEW Significado: Poco/s Uso: Expresan un número pequeño. "A few" puede indicar un número suficiente. Se usan sólo con nombres contables. Como hemos visto arriba, la opción de usar "few" o "a few" refleja la opinión sobre la cantidad expresada. "Few" describe la cantidad de forma negativa y "a few" la describe de forma positiva. Ejemplos: Frase interrogativa: Do you have a few dollars? ( Tienes unos dolares?) Frase afirmativa: There are few tourists here today. (Hay pocos turistas aquí hoy.) SOME Significado: Algunos, unos Uso: Se utiliza tanto para los nombres o sustantivos contables en singular como para los nombres o sustantivos contables en plural. Se usa en frases afirmativas e interrogativas (para afirmar algo); se sustituye "any" en frases negativas o interrogativas. Significa una cantidad indefinida, pero limitada. Ejemplos: Frase afirmativa/nombre contable: She has some apples. (Tiene algunas manzanas.) Frase afirmativa/nombre incontable: There is some milk in the kitchen. (Hay leche en la cocina.)
Frase interrogativa/nombre contable: Are there some tourists? ( Hay unos turistas?) Frase interrogativa/nombre incontable: Would you like some coffee? ( Quieres café?) ANY Significado: Algunos, ninguno Uso: Se utiliza en los mismos contextos que "some," pero en frases negativas o interrogativas. Ejemplos: Frase negativa/nombre contable: I do not have any cats. (No tengo ningún gato.) Frase negativa/nombre incontable: He does not have any money. (No tiene dinero.) Frase interrogativa/nombre contable: Are there any changes? ( Hay algunos cambios?) Frase interrogativa/nombre incontable: Is there any milk?

This shirt is smaller than that shirt. Esta camisa es más chica que aquella camisa. COMPARATIVES AND SUPERLATIVES Los superlativos sirven para referirse a sustantivos que son los únicos que presentan una cualidad que los diferencia del resto. Como vimos, en la frase "a small shirt" (una camisa chica), small es un adjetivo. Si todas las demás camisas son grandes, se puede comparar usando el superlativo "the smallest shirt" (la camisa más chica). Siempre se agrega "the" adelante.
