1 GOOD SHEPHERD CHURCH From the Pastor s Desk Collection for Haiti I would like to extend a most sincere thank you to everyone who contributed to last weekend s second collection to help support Catholic Relief Service s efforts among the people of Haiti. Your generous contribution of $5, will help in the continuing recovery and rebuilding efforts that are still so urgently needed among our brothers and sisters in Haiti. For those who were not here last weekend and who would like to make a financial donation for Haiti, please bring it to the office or drop it in the regularly offertory collection in an envelope marked Special Offering for Haiti. May God bless you in abundance for your good example, your kind generosity, and your Christ-like goodness to those in need. (Additional donations through the parish will be reported in upcoming bulletins.) Food Pantry Last Saturday morning, despite the very cold temperatures, our faithful volunteers who work in the Good Shepherd Food Pantry packed and distributed 334 bags of groceries to those who came in search of some extra assistance. We can be very proud of these volunteers who are so faithful each week, giving up part of their free time to serve those in need, no matter what the weather is like, no matter what excuse they could come up with to stay at home, stay in bed, stay warm, or make plans for themselves. They are not only feeding the hungry and assisting the needy in the name of the entire parish community, but they are also sharing with us vicariously the many blessings that God bestows on them for their care and concern for the less fortunate. May I once again remind everyone that although the shelves at the food pantry often run dry, real hunger and the need to provide for our brothers and sisters does not take a break or run dry. Please remember that you may contribute canned and dry goods each weekend by placing them in the containers at all the entrances of the church. You have been so good at helping us keep the doors of the pantry open. Many thanks to you, and God s blessings upon you. Communion Breakfast Please don t forget to mark your calendars and plan to join us for our Communion Breakfast on Sunday, February 21 st following the 8:30 AM Mass. The breakfast will be sponsored by the St. Joseph Council of the Knights of Columbus and will be held in the Auditorium of Good Shepherd School. The theme of the talk at the breakfast will be St. Francis of Assisi, Model of Conversion. The theme is very timely as Lent will have begun just a few days earlier on Ash Wednesday. Tickets will be available at the Parish Office and after all the Masses in the entrances of the Church. We look forward to sharing the morning with you. Ticket prices: $10 if purchased by February 14 th, $15 thereafter. Memorial Mass All members of the parish are invited to join us for a Memorial Mass for Br. Robert Fagan, FSC, which will be celebrated on Saturday, February 13, 2010 at 10:00 AM here at Good Shepherd. Br. Robert, who recently passed away on January 13, 2010, taught in the 5 th grade at Good Shepherd School from We invite all former students of Good Shepherd School, especially those who had Br. Robert as a teacher, their parents, and other former teachers to attend the Mass. A Crucifix in Your Home A number of parishioners have already taken advantage of purchasing a crucifix for their home while others have had one for many years. A variety of new crucifixes are available for purchase in our own gift shop as well as in religious article stores. For those who don t already have one, we hope that they will consider hanging a crucifix in their home, apartment, or bedroom, particularly as the beginning of Lent draws near.

2 NEW YORK A number of new religious articles, Bibles and prayer books have been added recently to our gift shop. Please feel free to stop in and take a look. Flowers in Church During Lent As we await the arrival of the beginning of Lent on Ash Wednesday, I would like to remind everyone that the liturgical guidelines state, During Lent the altar should not be decorated with flowers. This helps to remind us of the penitential nature of the season of Lent and helps us look forward to the wonderful solemnity of Easter, when, as with Christmas, we use flowers and other decorations to emphasize the joy of these important liturgical celebrations. Therefore, instead of purchasing flowers during the season of Lent, may I suggest that you donate that money to a charity or simply place it in the poor boxes in the church, so that they it may be used to assist those in need. I assure you that, as always, we will do our very best to decorate the church in a way that brings honor and glory to the Lord and enhances the beauty of our Easter liturgical celebrations. GOOD SHEPHERD SCHOOL OPEN HOUSE Good Shepherd School will be hosting an Open House this Monday, February 1 st at the following times: 8:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m., 1 p.m.- 2:30 p.m. and this Thursday, February 4 th at the following times: 8:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m., 1 p.m.-2:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. -7 p.m. All parents are invited to attend and learn more about the school. SAVE THE DATE The annual St. Patrick's Day Dinner Dance sponsored by the Good Shepherd Men's Club will be held on Saturday March 13, 2010; additional information will be in the bulletin next Sunday. CAPUCHIN FRANCISCAN PILGRIMAGES Capuchin Franciscan friars Fr. Michael Marigliano and Fr. Michael Sevigny will be leading several upcoming pilgrimages to the different Holy sites around the world. SUPER BOWL PARTY The Good Shepherd Men's Club will host its Super Bowl party on a movie theater size screen in the Good Shepherd School auditorium next Sunday February 7, Doors open at 4:00 p.m. Tickets are $25/person, includes food, beer, wine and soda. FEAST OF ST. BLAISE The feast of St. Blasé will be celebrated this Wednesday, February 3 rd. We will have individual blessing of the throats after every Mass in the Church. WORLD MARRIAGE DAY-Longest Married Couple The Search is on for the longest married couple in the Archdiocese of New York! Contestants need to be sacramentally married for a minimum of 65 years and live in the Archdiocese of NY. The couples will be honored on Sunday, February 14 th in St. Patrick s Cathedral at the 10:15 a.m. Mass, with a reception to follow. 4 JANUARY 31, 2010 Del Escritorio del Pastor Colecta para Haiti Me gustaría extender un sincero agradecimiento a todos los que contribuyeron a la segunda colecta para ayudar al Servicio Católico de Alivio para el pueblo de Haití, el pasado fin de semana. Su generosa contribución de $5, ayudará en la continua recuperación y los esfuerzos de reconstrucción que nuestros hermanos y hermanas en Haití tanto necesitan con urgencia. Adicionalmente se colectaron $ de nuestros estudiantes del programa de educación religiosa. Para aquellos que no estaban aquí la semana pasada y les gustaría hacer una donación monetaria para Haití, por favor traiga su donación a la oficina o puede dejarlo en la colecta diaria durante las Misas en un sobre que diga Ofrenda Especial para Haiti. Que Dios los bendiga generosamente por su buen ejemplo, su generosidad y su bondad parecida a la bondad de Cristo a los necesitados. (Les informaremos sobre donaciones adicionales para Haiti a través de la parroquia en los próximos boletines.) Despensa de Alimentos El pasado lunes por la mañana, a pesar de las bajas temperaturas, nuestros fieles voluntarios que trabajan en la Despensa de Alimentos del Buen Pastor empacaron y distribuyeron 334 bolsas de alimentos a todos aquellos que vinieron en busca de una ayuda adicional. No sólo están alimentando y ayudando a los necesitados en nombre de toda la comunidad parroquial, pero también están compartiendo con nosotros indirectamente las muchas bendiciones que Dios les concede por su cuidado y preocupación por los menos afortunados. Quisiera recordarles una vez más que, aunque los estantes en la despensa de alimentos a menudo se quedan vacios, el hambre y la necesidad para ayudar a nuestros hermanos y hermanas no toman un descanso. Por favor, recuerden que ustedes pueden contribuir productos enlatados cada fin de semana en los contenedores en las entradas de la iglesia. Ustedes han sido tan buenos ayudándonos a mantener las puertas de la despensa abierta. Muchas gracias y que las bendiciones de Dios caigan sobre todos ustedes. Desayuno de Unidad Por favor no se olvide de marcar su calendario y planear acompañarnos a nuestro Desayuno de Unidad el Domingo 21 de febrero después de la Misa de las 8:30 a.m. en ingles. El desayuno será patrocinado por el Consejo de San José de los Caballeros de Colón y se celebrara en el Auditorio de la Escuela del Buen Pastor. El tema de la charla en el desayuno será "San Francisco de Asís, Modelo de Conversión. El tema es muy oportuno, ya que la Cuaresma habrá comenzado unos días antes con el Miércoles de Ceniza. Los boletos estarán disponibles en la oficina de la parroquia y después de todas las Misas en las entradas de la Iglesia. Esperamos poder compartir la mañana con ustedes. El precio de los boletos son de $10 si se compran a más tardar el 14 de febrero, y $15 después de esa fecha. Misa Conmemorativa Todos los miembros de la parroquia están invitados a acompañarnos a una Misa en Conmemoración al Hermano Robert Fagan, FSC, que se celebrará el Sábado 13 de febrero del 2010 a las 10:00 a.m. aquí en el Buen Pastor. El Hno. Robert, que recientemente falleció el 13 de enero del 2010, fue maestro del 5 º grado en la Escuela del Buen Pastor de Invitamos a todos los antiguos alumnos de la Escuela del Buen Pastor, en especial a los que tuvieron al Hno. Un Crucifijo en Su Hogar Un número de feligreses ya han aprovechado en comprar un crucifijo para su hogar, mientras que otros han tenido uno durante muchos años. Una variedad de crucifijos nuevos están disponibles en venta en nuestra tienda en la

Para aquellos que todavía no tienen un crucifijo, esperamos que considere colocar un crucifijo en su casa, apartamento o habitación ya que la Cuaresma se acerca. Hemos añadido recientemente un número de nuevos artículos religiosos, biblias y libros de oración a nuestra tienda en la Iglesia. Por favor, siéntase libre de pasar y echarle un vistazo a la tienda. Flores en la Iglesia Durante la Cuaresma Mientras esperamos la llegada del comienzo de la Cuaresma con el Miércoles de Ceniza, me gustaría recordarles a todos que las normas litúrgicas dicen que, "Durante la Cuaresma el altar no debe ser decorado con flores." Esto nos ayuda a recordar de la naturaleza penitenciaria de la temporada de Cuaresma y nos ayuda a ver hacia adelante a la maravillosa solemnidad de la Pascua, así como en la Navidad, usamos las flores y otras decoraciones para acentuar la alegría de estas importantes celebraciones litúrgicas. Por lo tanto, en lugar de comprar flores durante la temporada de Cuaresma, me gustaría sugerirles que donen el dinero a alguna organización de caridad o ponerlas en las cajas de donación de los pobres, de modo que pueda ser utilizado para ayudar a los necesitados. Ese día se bendecirá las gargantas después de todas las Misas. DIA MUNDIAL DEL MATRIMONIO Se ha comenzado la búsqueda en la Arquidiócesis de Nueva York de la pareja que tiene casada más tiempo! Los concursantes tienen que haber estado casados sacramentalmente por un mínimo de 65 años y vivir en la Arquidiócesis de Nueva York. Las parejas serán honradas el domingo 14 de febrero en la Catedral de San Patricio en la Misa de las 10:15 a.m., seguido por una recepción.
