3 Note from Father Ringley Taking advantage of the good weather we have several construction projects underway this summer. The exterior and roof of St. Augustine s rectory are almost completely repaired. Soon, Fr. Augustine will no longer have to keep buckets in his room to collect the rainwater. The numerous leaks in the roof of St. Patrick s church are being assessed. It looks as though another patch job is simply not going to do the trick. We are getting estimates for replacing the sections of roof which are leaking. Also at the St. Patrick rectory we are addressing some pieces of slate which have become dislodged from the roof. You will have noticed that the scaffolding has been removed from the interior of St. Augustine s church. Some of the decorative plaster corbels atop the 12 columns are cracked. The exploratory work which went on for some weeks has led to some mixed conclusions about what should be done. In consultation with representatives from the diocese we should know soon what must be done to complete the repairs. Please see elsewhere in the bulletin information about the opportunity for a Bible study workshop in Spanish, as well as the opportunity to participate in the Prayer and Life workshop, also in Spanish. We hope that these programs will soon be available in English as well. Finally, we will celebrate the feast of St. Augustine with a light luncheon after the 12:10 Mass on Friday, August 28 th. If you are interested in joining the party, please follow the instructions listed elsewhere in the bulletin. May God bless you all. Fr. Ringley Learn Your Faith...A Weekly Educational Column. Because of its importance, we will devote our entire column this week to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary which we celebrate each year on August 15 th. Before addressing the dogma of the Assumption we must consider the end of Mary s life on earth. There is no reference in the Scriptures to Mary s death, nor is there any specific tradition regarding how, when, and where Mary died. Both Ephesus (Greece) and Jerusalem claim to be the site of Mary s tomb, but there is no actual historical evidence to support either of these claims. There is a long tradition, beginning in the Fifth Century in the Eastern Church, of celebrating a liturgical feast on August 15 th called the Dormition, from the Latin to sleep. The Bible and the early Christians often refer to death as falling asleep. We recall the Church s teaching that Mary was conceived in the womb of her mother (St. Ann) without the stain of Original Sin (the Immaculate Conception). The Church also teaches that Mary committed no actual (personal) sin throughout the course of her life. Furthermore, St. Paul s Letter to the Romans (5:12) tells us that sin entered the world through Adam s fault, and all are subject to death because Adam s sin (Original Sin) is transmitted to all mankind through generation. However, since Mary was not touched by the stain of Original Sin, it is possible that she did not die, but that she was taken from this life directly into heaven. This possibility has been recognized since the Fifth Century, but most theologians agree that Mary probably did die. Pope Pius XII, when he solemnly and formally defined the Dogma of the Assumption in 1950 was careful to thread a course between these two possibilities. He wrote, The Immaculate Mother of God, the ever Virgin Mary, after completing her course of life upon earth, was assumed to the glory of heaven both in body and soul. Now we may consider the term Assumption. The word comes from Latin roots (ad + sumo) meaning to take up, or to take to oneself. The Assumption is of Mary is often confused with the Ascension of Jesus. Because Jesus was God he could ascend (i.e. go up under his own power) into heaven. But Mary, although she was sinless, was human, and therefore had to be assumed, (i.e. taken up) into heaven by God. Some non-catholic Christians have argued that because the Assumption of Mary is not Scriptural it is an invention of men. However, the Catholic Church has never relied solely on Scripture as a source for Her teaching. Rather, She relies on both Scripture and Tradition. There is a longstanding tradition underlying belief in the dogma of the Assumption, and, as we have seen, it is perfectly reasonable. If the wages of sin is death, and Mary was not touched by any sin, it is reasonable to suppose that even if Mary did die, her sinless body would not have been subject to corruption. It is only fitting that she should share in the bodily resurrection of her Son immediately after her life on earth was ended. By celebrating the Solemnity of the Assumption we honor the sinless Virgin Mary and pray for our own share in that resurrection on the last day. Pope Francis U.S. Visit News: Pope Francis will canonize Blessed Junipero Serra on September 23, 2015 at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C. In the 18th century, Father Serra came to the New World to share his love of the Gospel with the indigenous people of California. Our local Serra Club of Bridgeport welcomes you to join us through prayer in celebrating the Holy Father s visit and the canonization of Blessed Serra. When Serra International was formed years ago, Blessed Serra was chosen as its name and spiritual patron because of his love of Christ and his priestly dedication to those he served. Unfortunately we have had to deny numerous requests for Sponsor Certificates. If you know someone who wants to be a sponsor make sure they have this information: Those requesting a Sponsor Certificate for Baptism or Confirmation must be active registered parishioners, attending Mass every Sunday at either St. Patrick or St. Augustine and assisting with the material needs of the Church, each according to his/her abilities. A sponsor must be over 16 years of age, have received all Sacraments of initiation, and, if married, be married according to the laws of the Catholic Church. You may call the office to make an appointment to meet with Father Ringley at least 3 months before the date the certificate is needed. 5 Saint Augustine of Hippo Bishop and Doctor of the Church Join us for a celebration in his honor! Friday August 28th On Friday August 28 th we will celebrate the Solemnity of Saint Augustine, the patron saint of our diocese and co-patron along with Saint Patrick of The Cathedral Parish. After the 12:10 p.m. Mass, we will have a celebration in his honor to include a light lunch in the Parish Center (St. Patrick s Church). The lunch will include drinks, lunch, coffee and dessert. To defray the cost of the lunch, we are asking for a $10 contribution per person. To join us for this special lunch please register by calling the parish office by Tuesday August 25 th.at 5 p.m. VIRTUS Training at The Cathedral Parish-Protecting God s Children Date: Thursday August 27th Time: 6 p.m. Location: Parish Center (St. Patrick s Church) This VIRTUS session will be conducted in English. All picnic volunteers must be VIRTUS trained by the date of the picnic. Please plan to attend this session as this will be the only session offered before the picnic. PARISH PICNIC-VOLUNTEERS NEEDED We need your help to make possible this annual event. It will be on Sunday September 13th from 9 am to 5 pm. Tener todos los Sacramentos de iniciación, y si eres casado debe ser bajo las leyes de la Iglesia Católica. 6 Mensaje del Padre Ringley Aprovechando el buen tiempo tenemos varios proyectos de construcción en marcha este verano. El exterior y el techo de la casa parroquial de San Agustín están casi totalmente reparados. Pronto, el Padre Agustín ya no tendrán que colocar baldes en su habitación para recoger las goteras causadas por la lluvia. Las numerosas goteras en el tejado de la iglesia de San Patricio se están evaluando. Parece ser que otro parche en el techo simplemente no va a ser suficiente. Estamos recibiendo los estimados para la sustitución del techo de las secciones que presentan grandes goteras. También en la casa parroquial de San Patricio se están reparando las tejas que se ha desprendido del techo. Usted habrá notado que el andamio ha sido extraído del interior de la iglesia San Agustín. Algunas de las ménsulas en yeso decorativo de las 12 columnas están agrietadas. Los trabajos exploratorios que se hicieron durante algunas semanas han recibido diferentes conclusiones acerca de lo que hay que hacer.
