3 Fifth Sunday of Easter Today s Readings: Acts 6:1-7; Ps 33:1-2, 4-5, 18-19; 1 Pt 2:4-9; Jn 14:1-12 Roman Catholics in the United States spend a good deal of time speaking of vocation and the manner in which each of us discerns our vocation for life. In today s apostolic letter, however, Peter gives us the cornerstone of our vocation, the description of what each of us is called to first and foremost by our baptism. He describes our vocation as a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people of [God s] own, so that you may announce the praises of Christ, who called us out of darkness into light. All of us, no matter what path our life s vocation may take us down, have been chosen by God, made holy, and anointed as priests in the high priesthood of Christ through baptism. All of this, so we may announce the praises of Christ. Vocation is given for proclamation at home, in the workplace--wherever life takes us--in service, in word, and in sacrament. ALL THAT GLITTERS... Luke paints a different portrait of the early community than we got a few weeks back. That scenario was rather idyllic: Everyone got along, everyone shared so that all had enough, and their numbers grew and grew. Then, as now, success contributes to growing pains in the community, and some division and bickering resulting from pre-existing divisions in the ranks of the new Christians are evident today. Differences within a single community based on different language pools is certainly a phenomenon known in many parishes today, as was the Hebrew vs. Greek division described in Acts. But, filled with the Spirit and wisdom, the community used this opportunity to discern a new way to continue the service of all, so that the Good News might continue to be spread. We hear for the first time of the vocation of deacon being discerned by the community. We also hear the rather surprising--to our modern ears- -information that even a large group of priests was joining. THEN VS. NOW This piece of information surprises us today, since the New Testament uses the word priest here in the sense of Jewish priests of the Jerusalem temple. The Christian Scriptures only use the word priest for Christ, for the community of the baptized, and in the third way described here. The vocation we call priest nowadays is presbyteros in Greek, not hierus, the word for priest. Peter s letter uses the word in the second sense, so the vocation of deacon and the emerging vocations of the Jewish priests are based on the stature of all the baptized as a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people of [God s] own. There are many opportunities in our Church today--some created by divisions or other unfortunate circumstances--for us to continue the Spirit- and wisdom-driven discernment of the place of many various vocations given by God. Thus may we continue to follow Christ, our Way, our Truth, our Life, always--as Peter tells us--for the purpose of announcing his praises. St. Vincent de Paul s Bundle Sunday Save the Date! Our next Bundle Sunday with the St. Vincent de Paul Society will be on June 1 st. The truck will be in the parish parking lot (by the flag pole) from 8:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Please bring any usable items that will help needy individuals (clothing, shoes, household goods, small appliances and misc. items, as well as newspapers). For large items including furniture and large appliances, please contact or HELP-1 for home pickups. Take this opportunity to clean out your closet, home, garage, office, etc... Preparation for Holy Eucharist First Communion for Children Classes are in English on Saturday mornings from 9:15 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. This is a two (2) year program. Requirements: Ages 7-16 Must have already been baptized Fill out Registration Form (available in the Parish Center) Copy of Baptism Certificate Photograph of Student (passport size) $65.00 per student, per year Registrations are NOW OPEN and continue until classes are filled. 5 Quinto Domingo de Pascua Lecturas de hoy: Hch 6:1-7; Sal 33:1-2, 4-5, 18-19; 1 Pe 2:4-9; Jn 14:1-12 TODO LO QUE BRILLA... San Lucas nos pinta un cuadro de la primera comunidad cristiana diferente al que vimos hace unas semanas. Aquella escena era bastante idílica: Todos se llevaban bien, todos compartían hasta que todos tuvieran suficiente y sus números crecían y crecían. En aquel entonces, igual que ahora, el triunfo contribuye a las molestias del crecimiento en la comunidad, y hoy vemos algunas discordias y chismes como resultado de divisiones pre-existentes en los rangos de los nuevos cristianos. Las diferencias dentro de una sola comunidad basada en diferentes idiomas es ciertamente un fenómeno conocido en muchas parroquias hoy, como sucedió entre los hebreos y los griegos (helenistas) descritos en los Hechos. Pero llenos del Espíritu y de sabiduría, la comunidad usó esa oportunidad para discernir una nueva manera de continuar el servicio de todos, y la Buena Nueva continuara diseminándose. Escuchamos por primera vez como la comunidad discernía sobre la vocación de los diáconos. También escuchamos sobre algo sorprendente --para nuestros oídos modernos- que hasta un gran número de sacerdotes aceptó la fe. ENTONCES Y AHORA Este dato nos sorprende hoy día ya que el Nuevo Testamento usa la palabra sacerdotes en el sentido de los sacerdotes judíos del templo de Jerusalén. La Escritura cristiana sólo usa la palabra sacerdote para Cristo, para la comunidad de los bautizados, y con el tercer significado usado aquí. La vocación que llamamos sacerdote hoy día es presbyteros (que también se usa en castellano) del griego, y no hierus, la palabra para sacerdote. La carta de Pedro usa la palabra con su segundo significado, porque el sentido de la vocación del diácono y la resurgente vocación de los sacerdotes judíos están basados en la dignidad de todos los bautizados como raza elegida, un reino de sacerdotes, una nación consagrada, un pueblo que Dios eligió para que fuera suyo. Hay muchas oportunidades en nuestra Iglesia hoy -algunas creadas por divisiones u otras circunstancias desafortunadas- para nosotros poder continuar el discernimiento inspirado por el Espíritu y la sabiduría sobre el lugar de las diversas vocaciones que Dios nos da. Los discípulos están perturbados, pues quizás sientan ya la inminente partida de Jesús. Naturalmente le hacen la pregunta central, que la mayoría de los cristianos a la larga van a hacer: Señor, no sabemos a dónde vas, cómo podemos saber el camino? La respuesta de Jesús es bien sencilla. Si nos enfocamos en conocerlo y en creer en él, encontraremos el camino. Ese camino nos conduce al lugar que ha sido preparado para nosotros en la casa de su Padre. Todo suena tan fácil. Sin embargo, cada uno de nosotros sabe que el único camino fácil es el del pecado. Tenemos la opción: o tomamos el camino fácil, o escogemos el desafío de seguir los pasos del Señor. Lo maravilloso de esto es que nunca estamos solos en el camino del Señor. Tenemos nuestra comunidad de fe, que nos apoya durante el camino que esperamos nos conduzca a la casa del Padre. 5

Young people who abuse alcohol are more likely to have impaired judgment compared to those who do not. They are prone to making poor decisions, which can result in risky behavior such as driving while intoxicated, sexual activity, or violence. Young people who drink are also more likely to become victims or perpetrators of physical or sexual assault. In addition, recent research has shown the human brain continues to develop well into a person s twenties. Alcohol use at a very young age can significantly affect brain development. Even though the shrine will be up, we have not met the fundraising goal to cover the fees of the artist and contractors. To help meet the goal, we invite you to keep supporting us by purchasing food at our food sales and/or by sponsoring an artistic tile. The tiles are part of the final design of the shrine and will be next to our Blessed Mother for generations to come. Each artistic tile will include artwork and the family last name/organization name. The tile pricing is as follows: Size 8 x 8 $2,000 (Only a few tiles of this size are left!) Size 6 x 6 $1,000 Size 4 x 4 $500 Tiles are sold on a first-come, first-served basis. The tiles may be paid in three payments (cash, check or credit card). Knights of Columbus Council Schedules: 1st Degree & 2nd Degree Ceremony & Membership Drive All male parishioners 18 years old or older are cordially invited to join the Knights of Columbus. The St. Genevieve Council will conduct its 1st Degree & 2nd Degree Exemplification Ceremony on May 31, 2014, Saturday in the St. Genevieve Madonna Hall. Según la Encuesta de Monitoreo del Futuro del 2011, 70 por ciento de los estudiantes de último año de la preparatoria y 33 por ciento de los estudiantes de octavo grado han experimentado con alcohol. Los jóvenes que abusan alcohol son más propensos a tener un mal juicio comparado con los que no lo hacen. Ellos tienden a hacer pobres decisiones, que pueden resultar en un comportamiento riesgoso como conducir mientras están intoxicados, actividad sexual o violencia. Los jóvenes que toman también son más propensos a convertirse en víctimas o perpetradores de asalto físico y sexual. Además, recientes investigaciones han mostrado que el cerebro humano continúa desarrollándose hasta bien avanzados los veinte años. El uso de alcohol a una edad temprana puede afectar significativamente el desarrollo cerebral. Soy el camino, la verdad y la vida, Jesús asegura a sus discípulos. En ese momento no entendieron lo que él les quería decir, ellos buscaban respuestas sencillas. Muéstranos al Padre, Felipe le ruega. Pero la primera y la segunda lectura nos muestran cómo la Iglesia joven entendía las palabras de Jesús. El increíble crecimiento de la Iglesia los llevó a seleccionar a siete hombres para que hicieran las obras de servicio necesarias para tantos miembros. Los seguidores de Jesús habían crecido con tales número que Pedro podía exclamar en su carta que Cristo, la piedra rechazada se había convertido en la piedra angular a quien todos podían acudir para su salvación. Aun hasta nuestros días, él es realmente el camino, la verdad y la vida. 9

12 Blessing of the Guadalupe Shrine What better day to honor our Blessed Mother than on Mother s Day! On Sunday, May 11 th, Fr. Alden blessed the new shrine for Our Lady of Guadalupe. The shrine was designed by Lalo Garcia who also designed the Guadalupe shrine at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels. The mural, one of its kind, is made from talavera pottery which is made only in Puebla, Mexico. The shrine is not yet fully completed. There is still time to sponsor a tile in memory of your loved ones or with the name of your business/organization. Please see page 8 of today s bulletin to see how you can be part of this beautiful project. A big celebration will follow later this year to dedicate the shrine. Bendición del Altar El domingo, 11 de mayo, el Padre Alden bendijo el nuevo altar a la Virgen de Guadalupe. El altar fue diseñado por Lalo Garcia. Este mural, unico en su clase, es hecho de talavera. El altar aun no esta completamente terminado. Aun hay tiempo de patrocinar un azulejo. Favor de ver la pagina 8 del boletin de hoy para ver como puede ser parte de este hermoso proyecto.
