2 Page 2 W EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME - August 2, 2015 Today s Gospel Reflection: John 6:24-35 GOD S WORK e are so busy! Most of us have more than one job to do, and we never seem to have enough time. We are workers, volunteers, parents, friends, and most of us are more than one thing at a time. But which of these is the work of God? We seldom view our ordinary work as being the work of God. We may think that we have to be ministers or priests, missionaries or charity workers, engaged full-time in works formally identified as being God s work. But everything we do with a faithful heart and with love for others is God s work. We each have our own role to fill in the world, and many gifts are necessary. We cannot always see the direct connection of our daily work to the plan of God. But we trust and we believe that God leads us to do what is needed, where it is needed. What is God s work? 3 Page 3 Today s second collection is for Parish Building Fund The Feast of the Transfiguration of Our Lord, God and Savior Jesus Christ is celebrated each year on August 6. T he feast commemorates the transfiguration or metamorphosis of Christ on Mount Tabor, when our Lord appeared in His divine glory before the Apostles Peter, James, and John. Biblical Story Jesus took the Apostles Peter, James, and John with Him up upon a mountain, and while they were on the mountain Jesus was transfigured. His face shone like the sun, and His garments became glistening white. Moses and Elijah appeared with Christ, talking to Him. Peter declared how good it was for them to be there and expressed the desire to build three booths for Moses, Elijah, and Christ. While Peter was speaking, a bright cloud overshadowed them. A voice came from the cloud saying, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to Him." When the disciples heard this they fell on their faces filled with awe. Jesus came to them and told them to not be afraid. When the three looked up they saw only Jesus. As Jesus and His disciples came down the mountain, He told them not to speak of what they had seen until He had risen from the dead. At his Transfiguration Christ showed his disciples the splendor of his beauty, to which he will shape and color those who are his: He will reform our lowness configured to the body of his glory (Philippians 3:21) (St. Thomas Aquinas, Summa Theologiae). Thoughts on Giving The court was convened and the books were open The one like a Son of Man received dominion, glory and kingship; all peoples, nations and languages serve him. (Daniel 7:10, 13-14) We juggle many demands for our time and our treasure. Yet, on Judgment Day, when court is convened and the book is opened, which of those demands will be on God s list of priorities? Ultimately, we will be judged on how well we served Our Lord. As you spend your time and money, try asking yourself if your choices serve God. It may help you look at your priorities in a new way. ALL GOD S CHILDREN aint Paul talks today about Christian community. He urges us to S be well mannered but also to show courtesy, tolerance, and mutual forgiveness in imitation of Christ. This is hard enough in our own family, but even tougher in a parish, which exhibits such a diversity of people. We come from every walk of life, many backgrounds, and every income level. Some families founded the parish; others just arrived. For such a group to be harmonious requires recognizing and honoring different gifts, and bearing differences with grace and acceptance. As such, a Christian community can offer a powerful witness to a multi-ethnic and multicultural society that it is possible for people of different origins to live and worship together. This unity in diversity of a people gathered around the one table of the one Lord proclaims the truth that in God there are no distinctions, only the family of God s children, beloved of the One who created all. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION ustoms surrounding wedding rites are often in tension with our liturgical tradition. Sometimes practices are almost forced on engaged couples. Anyone who has ever planned a wedding knows how quickly the invoices expand. A hundred dollars here, a hundred there, often for non essentials, when more deeply traditional practices, like an expression of charity for the poor, fall by the wayside. One such practice often labeled as deeply traditional is the aisle runner for the bride. Actually, the American tradition is to clean our church buildings, in contrast to European village churches, which often had dirt or cobblestone floors. There, a band of linen (rented) or a carpet of flowers might be set in place for a bridal party. Here, plastic roll ups are procured and positioned by the ushers for the bride s entrance. The problems are many, not the least of which is that there is no bride s entrance in our official liturgy. Another is that in a wedding Mass, the communicants have to navigate the treacherous aisle with the sometimes-slippery runner. The aisle runner is neither a treasure nor a tradition, and by omitting it, the couple who asks for canned goods for the poor to be brought to church at their wedding Mass will find an extra hundred dollars or so for the cause! They were Peter, Andrew, James, John, Phillip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, Thaddaeus, James II, Simon, and Judas. Matthias, the apostle named to replace Judas, was not mentioned until the book of Acts, which is not one of the Gospels. HEALTH CORNER Cut Fat. Avoid the obvious such as fried foods, burgers and other fatty meats (i.e. pork, bacon, ham, salami, ribs and sausage). Dairy products such as cheese, cottage cheese, milk and cream should be eaten in low fat versions. Nuts and sandwich meats, mayonnaise, margarine, butter and sauces should be eaten in limited amounts. Most are available in lower fat versions such as substitute butter, fat free cheeses and mayonnaise. Thought for the day: Lean, mean, fat-burning machine. Then be one! 6 Página 6 DECIMOOCTAVO DOMINGO DEL TIEMPO ORDINARIO - 2 de agosto, 2015 Reflexión al Evangelio de hoy: Juan 6,24-35 EL TRABAJO QUE DIOS QUIERE Estamos tan ocupados! Muchos de nosotros tenemos más de un trabajo y parecería que nunca tenemos suficiente tiempo. Somos trabajadores, voluntarios, padres, amigos y la mayoría es más de una cosa a la vez. Pero, cuál de estos es el trabajo que Dios quiere? Rara vez vemos nuestro trabajo común como el trabajo que Dios quiere. Quizás pensamos que debemos ser ministros o sacerdotes, misioneros o benefactores, que debemos realizar trabajos de tiempo completo que se consideran como las obras de Dios. Pero todo lo que hacemos con un corazón fiel y con amor por el prójimo es una obra de Dios. Cada uno tiene un papel que cumplir en el mundo y muchos dones son necesarios. No siempre podemos ver la relación directa que existe entre nuestro trabajo diario y los designios de Dios. Pero confiamos y tenemos fe en que Dios nos guía a hacer lo que es necesario, cuando es necesario. Cuál es la obra de Dios? La obra de Dios consiste en que crean en aquél a quien él ha enviado (Juan 6:29). Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. N La Fiesta de la Transfiguración se celebra cada año el 6 de agosto. arra el santo Evangelio (Lc. 9, Mc. 6, Mt. 10) que unas semanas antes de su Pasión y Muerte, subió Jesús a un monte a orar, llevando consigo a sus tres discípulos predilectos, Pedro, Santiago y Juan. Y mientras oraba, su cuerpo se transfiguró. Sus vestidos se volvieron más blancos que la nieve y su rostro más resplandeciente que el sol. Y se aparecieron Moisés y Elías y hablaban con El acerca de lo que le iba a suceder próximamente en Jerusalén. Pedro, muy emocionado exclamó: -Señor, si te parece, hacemos aquí tres campamentos, uno para Ti, otro para Moisés y otro para Elías. Pero en seguida los envolvió una nube y se oyó una voz del cielo que decía: "Este es mi Hijo muy amado, escuchadlo". El Señor llevó consigo a los tres apóstoles que más le demostraban su amor y su fidelidad. Pedro que era el que más trabajaba por Jesús; Juan, el que tenía el alma más pura y más sin pecado; Santiago, el más atrevido y arriesgado en declararse amigo del Señor, y que sería el primer apóstol en derramar su sangre por nuestra religión. Jesús no invitó a todos los apóstoles, por no llevar a Judas, que no se merecía esta visión. Los que viven en pecado no reciben muchos favores que Dios concede a los que le permanecen fieles. Eso sigue sucediendo a las personas que rezan con fervor. La oración les transfigura y embellece el alma y les vuelve mucho más agradables a Dios. Dos personas muy famosas del Antiguo Testamento. Moisés en nombre de la Ley, y Elías en nombre de los profetas, venían a respaldar y felicitar a Jesucristo y a proclamar que El es el enviado de Dios para salvar al mundo. Es un elogio hermosísimo hecho por el Padre Dios, acerca de Jesucristo. Es su Hijo único. Es amadísimo por Dios y es preferido por El a todos los demás seres que existen. Verdaderamente merece nuestro amor este Redentor tan amado por su Padre que es Dios. LAS INTENSIONES DEL SANTO PADRE POR EL MES DE AGOSTO Universal. Voluntarios. Para que quienes colaboran en el campo del voluntariado se entreguen con generosidad al servicio de los necesitados. Evangelización: Ir a los marginados. Para que, saliendo de nosotros mismos, sepamos hacernos prójimos de quienes se encuentran en las periferias de las relaciones humanas y sociales. Podemos entregarnos a la oración de diferentes maneras: oración individual y oración en comunidad. La oración en el Viernes Primero es una forma hermosa de orar individualmente, en familia y en comunidad de fe. Nuestro Horario de Misas: 8:00 a.m. Misa en inglés; 6:00 p.m. Misa en vietnamita, 7:30 p.m. Misa en español Todos los feligreses están invitados a adorar al Santísimo Sacramento los Viernes Primeros de las 8:00 a.m. a las 6:00 p.m. y después de la Misa de las 7:30 p.m. concluyendo con la bendición a las 10 de la noche. CORRESPONSABILIDAD CRISTIANA os discípulos responsables hacen una decisión firme y L consciente, acompañada de la acción, de seguir a Jesucristo sin importarles el costo. i es fruto de la conversión, del cambio de la S mente y el corazón, este compromiso no se expresa en una simple acción, ni en una serie de acciones en un dado período de tiempo, sino en el transcurso de toda la vida. Participa en los esfuerzos que se hacen para salvar las barreras de idioma, de experiencia de fe y de cultura yendo a Misa en otro idioma, dando clases gratuitamente de inglés como segundo idioma o uniéndote a la celebración en honor a un santo que no conoces. Matías, el sucesor de Judas, no se menciona hasta el Libro de los Hechos, el cual no es uno de los Evangelios. CONSEJOS DE SALUD Mal olor en los pies? Use zapatos de piel y calcetines de algodón. Lávese los pies con un jabón de PH ácido, es decir 5,5 y hágalo por lo menos una vez al día. Para un cuidado completo, una vez a la semana sumerja sus pies en agua templada durante media hora. Puede añadir sal marina o sal común al agua, ésta combate el olor y relaja los pies. Continúe frotando los laterales, callos y durezas con piedra pómez. Utilice algún gel o crema exfoliante. Para terminar, aplique unos polvos de talco desodorante que absorban bien la humedad. No olvide aplicarlos en los pies, calcetines y en el calzado.
