1 PERFORMANCE OF SUBSURFACE FLOW CONSTRUCTED WETLANDS WITH AND WITHOUT ZANTEDESCHIA AETHIPOPICA FOR SWINE WASTE WATER TREATMENT IN THE TROPICS by Hugo A. Guillén-Trujillo 1, José A. Figueroa-Gallegos 1 and Thomas L. Crisman 2 ABSTRACT Two subsurface flow constructed wetlands were designed, built and evaluated. One system was used as a control and the other emergent plants (Zantedeschia aethiopica) were cultivated. This research was developed in a swine farm located in La Trinitaria, Chiapas, Mexico. An anaerobic lagoon was used for pretreatment of the swine waste. After stabilizing the swamps, samples were taken during a three-month period at the effluent of the anaerobic lagoon (IP), the effluent of the control (EPSA) and the effluent of the system with plants (EPCA). Results indicated better removal efficiency of pollutants in the system with plants. Measurements for chemical oxygen demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD 5 ), total phosphorous as PO 4, nitrogen as NH 3, total suspended solids (TSS), conductivity, turbidity, color, sulfates as SO 4, and total and fecal coliforms, were taken according to the Standard Methods. INTRODUCTION The discharges of residual waters to swamps are not a new practice, many societies have discharged residual waters in these per centuries. As he/she not always has a natural swamp, to build swamps can be a good option, the objective it is to achieve that these swamps work the nearest thing possible to a natural swamp; they are generally built and managed with the use of vegetation that improves the quality of the water. The roots of the used plants liberate to the means surrounding small quantities of compound organic as sugars or amino acids that favor to certain microorganisms that live to their surroundings, it is generated this way kind of a sphere of influence of the root that is known with the rizósfera name. The microorganisms favored in turn by the rizósfera can favor to the plant when accelerating the solubilización of nutritious of the floor or of the insolent organic matter or, like it happens to certain bacterias, fixing the atmospheric nitrogen. The swamps or built humedales are systems with aquatic plants, of superficial flow or of subsuperficie flow. This Last one is an unit that consists on a channel or grave in whose bottom a waterproof material is placed to the water, which can be plastic, not very permeable floor or I sum up. The channel you full with a porous substratum (I am accustomed to, sand or it burdens) to support the growth of the emergent aquatic plants. The residual water flows for graveness and horizontally through the substratum in which enters in contact with the medical microorganisms that you/they live in association with the roots of the plants in the substratum. 2 Study Area The investigation was carried out in a farm porcicola where you/they stay from 5 to 10 pigs for it puts on weight, as all the farms of the area, he/she has problems related to the disposition of the waters residual product of the laundry of the facilities, generating bad scents and proliferation of flies. This farm is in The Trinitarian one, Chiapas, Mexico, is located 1,540 MSNM ' of north latitude and ' of 1ongitud west of the meridian of Greenwich; the climate of the town is semicalido-subhiunedo, with half temperature of 18.ó C, half maximum temperature of 24.8 C, temperature minimum stocking of 12.5 C, annual precipitation of 908 mm, evaporation of 1535 mm, with predominant address of the winds north and speeds among 2.1 m/s and or m/s, the lluvi$ls régime is from May to October (INEGI. 1995). Once established the plants, weekly during three months they took simple samples in the influente of the swamps (IF), and samples composed in the efluente of the swamp without pelicans (EPSA) and of the efluente of the swamp with pelicans (EPCA). METHODS RESULTS AND DISCUSSION El tiempo de residencia hidraulico en ambos pantanos fue de 2.5 dias, este valor comparado con los 3.72 dias de diseño nos da una relación de 0.67, posiblemente porque la permeabilidad del substrato utilizado fue mayor que el calculado teóricamente o por existir algun corto circuito en el sistema. El oxigeno disuelto en el pantano sin alcatraces, a una profundidad de 5 cm de la superficie del agua, se midieron concentraciones de 1.4, 1.3 y 1.2 mg/l, respectivamente, pero para profundidades de 10 cm y mayores, resultaron concentraciones de oxigeno de 0 mg/l para todos los casos. Para el pantano con alcatraces, 10s resultados fueron de 0.5, 2.5 y 1.8 mg/l y 0.1, 0.2 y 0 mg/l respectivamente. Tanto en la laguna (IP), en el efluente del pantano sin alcatraces (EPSA), como para el pantano con alcatraces (EPCA) las mediciones reportaron 0 mg/l de oxigeno disuelto. El ph, en el IF osciló entre 7.39 y 6.42, el EPSA entre 7.42 a 6.81 yel EPCAentre 7.47 y En el IF y EPSA la tendencia fue a acidificarse, mientras que en el EPCA la tendencia rue a obtener un valor de 7. La temperatura del agua fue un reflejo de la temperatura ambiente, los valores no mostraron diferencias notables. Los alcatraces tuvieron un buen desarrollo, floreciendo abundantemente, se le cortaron las flores y algunas hojas para inducir el crecimiento de brotes nuevos y por lo mismo aumentar las necesidades de nutrientes de las plantas.

3 En lo referente a la Demanda Quimica de Oxigeno (DQO): en el influente de los pantanos, en terminos generales se observó una tendencia ascendente en los valores, esto se debió a que cuando el sistema comenzó a operar los cerdos estaban pequeños, por lo que la carga orgánica fue aumentando a medida que estos fueron creciendo. En ambos efluentes (EPSA y EPCA) hasta la muestra 5 no se observó una diferencia clara en sus concentraciones, pero a partir de la muestra 6, se pudo observar las ventajas del pantano con alcatraces, esto coincidió con la floración y poda de las plantas. Los resultados obtenidos de los analisis de la DBO5, tienen tendencias muy semejantes a los de la DQO comentadas en el parrafo anterior, con una relación DBO5/DQO en los siguientes porcentajes: para el IP: 49.20%; para el EPSA: 51.64% y para el EPCA: 51.95%. La concentracion maxima en el IP se encontro en la muestra 8 con mg/l a la que le correspondio una concentracion en el EPCA de mg/l, que representó una eficiencia de remocion del 85.84%. El fosfato total como PO4, hasta la muestra 4, su reduccion fue casi la misma en ambos pantanos, pero a partir de la muestra 5 se ve la diferencia de mayor reduccion en el pantano con alcatraces, lo que coincide como en los casos de la DQO y DBO5 con la floracion y poda de las plantas. El N-amoniacal no muestra grandes diferencias en los resultados coma los parametros anteriores, unicamente se pudo observar una pequeña reduccion en el EPCA a partir de la muestra 7. Para los sólidos suspendidos totales (SST), hasta la muestra 4, ambos pantanos tuvieron casi la misma reduccion, en las muestras 5, 6, 7, 9 y 10 se observo mayor reduccion en el pantano con alcatraces, la muestra 8 presento mayor reduccion en el pantano sin alcatraces. Aunque los promedios indican un porcentaje mayor de reduccion de SST en el pantano con alcatraces, no se aprecia claramente, lo que si es claro es que existio reduccion al pasar por ambos pantanos. Al analizar los resultados de la conductividad electrica no se apreciaron grandes cambios. La turbiedad siempre se mantuvo en valores mas bajos en el efluente del pantano con alcatraces. El color no mostro cambios significativos al pasar por ambos pantanos. El Sulfato Total como SO4 no muestra una tendencia clara entre el EPSA y EPCA, pero siempre estuvieron por debajo de las concentraciones en el IP. En promedio la relacion coliformes fecales/coliformes totales fue: para IP de 82.30%, para EPSA de 97.98% y para EPCA de 89.62%; se observa unicamente en el EPCA una tendencia de reduccion constante; aunque se reduce en alto porcentaje, los resultados no son adecuados para disponer las aguas de acuerdo a la normatividad vigente, por lo que requiere adicionar cloro o algún otro tratamiento para bajar las concentraciones de coliformes. El unico valor reportado de N-nitratos fue en el EPCA en la muestra no.6 con concentracion de 0.25 mg/l, en los demas fueron reportados como ND (no determinados). Es importante mencionar que unicamente los datos de temperatura del agua y el ph medido en campo presentaron valores bajos en su desviación estandar, los demas parametros presentaron valores altos.
