1 Total Solar Eclipse Safety Information Overview Impact The first total solar eclipse visible in North America in 38 years will occur on Monday, August 21, The total eclipse of the Sun occurs when the Moon passes between the Sun and the Earth and fully blocks the Sun. This is a rare but perfectly natural event and can be enjoyed safely by taking precautions included below. The eclipse will start roughly at 9 a.m. The total eclipse is estimated to occur in Corvallis around 10:15 a.m. As many as 400,000 visitors may travel to Corvallis and the surrounding area during peak days, August to enjoy the total solar eclipse and local fun events. The concentrated solar rays will damage your eyes. Driving & Biking Safety Avoid driving during this event. If driving when the total solar eclipse occurs, find a safe place to pull over as far from traffic as possible. Never drive while wearing your solar glasses. Traffic congestion will be unusually heavy for our area. Stay calm and be cautious. Do not block roadways, driveways or other locations requiring emergency vehicle access. Parking in bike lanes is illegal. When biking, wear a helmet, ride single file and use hand signals to show where you re going. Fire Safety The total solar eclipse will take place right at the peak of our local fire season. Campfires are banned during this period. Avoid driving through fields and farmland with tall grass. The heat from your car s engine can cause dry grass to ignite. Local officials instituted a temporary ban on fireworks throughout Benton County during this period. If smoking in approved locations, properly dispose of cigarettes and matches. Never discard cigarette butts on the ground or in vegetation.
