1 Avoid Cuts from Sharp Objects Many of the tasks that you do every day involve handling or working with sharp tools, or handling materials that have sharp edges. Think of some examples of sharps around a jobsite: wire protruding from a bundle of rebar, pieces of sheet metal, razor knives, pocketknives, chisels, nails, shards of broken glass, saw blades, etc. All of these items can injure you, and in some cases there can be serious complications. Let s discuss some safe work practices that can help you prevent injuries caused by sharp objects: Use the right tool for the job. Don t make do with another tool or object. Don t multi-task while handling a sharp object. Wear leather gloves when you handle sharp objects and when you use sharp tools. Always cut away from your body and face. Never use a knife or any other sharp tool on a workpiece that is resting in your lap or braced against your leg. Don t carry sharp or pointed tools in your pockets. Don t use knife blades as screwdrivers. Never remove or wedge back guards, especially guards that cover blades or cutters. Store sharp tools in their cases, boxes, or sheaths. Use blade holders when you change blades and cutters on power tools. Don t pick up broken glass with your bare hands. Use a dustpan and a broom, and wear gloves. Always focus on the task at hand, so the tool you re using doesn t end up in your hand! If you do get injured, remember that even the smallest cut, abrasion, or puncture wound can become infected. Not only can an infection cause pain and swelling, but in severe cases, it can lead to permanent disability or even death. If you cut or puncture any part of your body, get first-aid treatment right away. Always wash your hands with soap and water before administering first aid. For minor cuts, clean the wound with soap and water. Apply direct pressure to stop the bleeding. Apply antibacterial ointment to the wound. Cover the wound with a non-stick, sterile dressing to keep dirt and germs out. For minor punctures, clean the wound by rinsing it in a stream of water for at least 5 minutes and then washing it with soap and water. Apply ointment and a non-stick bandage. If you see an object or fragment in the wound, don t try to remove it; have it checked by a doctor immediately. See a doctor if the injury is deep, if it s over a joint, or if it s difficult to clean, as many puncture wounds are. SAFETY REMINDER See your doctor if any wound shows signs of infection such as redness, swelling, or pus, or if you have a fever.
