PARISH CELEBRATION OF THE ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY This Friday, August 14 th, our parish will come together in prayer and song to honor our Blessed Mother. The celebration begins at 6:00 p.m. with a procession from OL of Mt. Carmel Chapel, followed by the recitation of the Rosary in the languages our parish speaks English / Spanish / Italian. We will meet at the outdoor statue of Our Lady. We will also bless the rosaries that our parishioners made on Wednesday, August 12 th. The Mass of the Assumption will begin at 7:30 p.m. and will be celebrated in three languages. It should be a wonderful sign to ourselves and our neighbors of our devotion to Mary and our firm belief that through her, we come to Jesus, her son and our Lord. From the Pastor s Desk Although our school is closed, repairs and painting continue as we get ready to open in September as Saint Leo Catholic Academy. Our parish and school communities have cooperated fully with the Bishop s desire to preserve Catholic education by converting all parish schools into Catholic academies. These academies all have Boards of Members and Boards of Directors. Each Board of Directors is made up of dedicated lay men and women who endeavor to develop the school s enrollment, ties to alumni, marketing efforts and fund raising projects. I am happy to say that the new St. Leo Catholic Academy has a very good Board, made up of nine dedicated men and women who love the school and want to see it thrive and grow. One of its first decisions was to hire Mrs. Maureen Blaine as the principal. With many years of experience as principal of St. Leo School, she brings all that experience and energy to the new Academy. The faculty of the school was also hired, further deepening the pool of experience. I will continue to take an active part in the new Academy, being part of the Board of Members, along with Fr. Darrell DaCosta, the pastor of St. Paul the Apostle Church, which is aligned with the Academy (as is our parish). So, when you see a new sign / banner on the school, you won t be confused. Children in middle school (6th, 7th or 8th grades), who have not yet received their first Holy Communion, will be required to attend a three-year program and will also be required to prepare for and receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation (confession). These children will receive First Eucharist and Confirmation together. Adults (16 and up) who have not received any of the sacraments can join the RCIA program by calling the Office for an appointment. Adults, regardless of their age, are strongly encouraged to join this Sunday program.

4 The RC Church of St. Leo Sunday, August 9, 2015 Celebración parroquial de la Asunción de la Bienaventurada Virgen María Este viernes, 14 de agosto, nuestra parroquia se congregará en oración y cantos para celebrar a nuestra Bendita Madre. La ocasión comenzará a las 6 de la tarde con una procesión de la capilla del Monte Carmelo a la iglesia, el rezo del Rosario en los lenguajes de nuestra parroquia: el inglés, el español y el italiano. Nos reuniremos frente a la estatua exterior de Nuestra Señora. También bendeciremos los rosarios que nuestros feligreses hayan hecho el miércoles, 12 de agosto. La Misa de la Asunción ha de comenzar a las 7:30 del atardecer y será oficiada en tres idiomas. Será una muestra maravillosa, a nosotros y a nuestros vecinos, de nuestra devoción a María y nuestra firme creencia que a través de ella llegamos a Jesucristo, su hijo y nuestro Señor. Del Escritorio del Párroco: Aun la escuela está cerrada en este momento, el trabajo de reparaciones y pintura continua, en preparación para abrirla en septiembre como Saint Leo Catholic Academy. Las comunidades de la parroquia y la escuela han cooperado completamente con el deseo del Obispo DiMarzio a preservar la educación católica por la conversión de todas las escuelas parroquiales al Academias Católicas. Todas estas academias han Juntas de Miembros y Juntas de Directores. Cada Junta de of Directores consiste en laicos dedicados (hombres y mujeres) quienes trabajar a desarrollar la enrollamiento de la escuela, lazos a los graduados, esfuerzas a publicar la escuela y encontrar las nuevas fuentes de fondos. Una de las primeras decisiones fue alquilar Sra. Maureen Blaine como la Directora. Con muchos años de experiencia como Directora de la Escuela de San León, ella traiga esta experiencia y energía a la nueva Academia. Los profesores de la escuela también eran alquilada, aumentando el caudal de experiencia. Voy a continuar mi presencia en la nueva Academia, como un miembro de la Junta de los Miembros, con Padre Darrell DaCosta, el párroco de la Iglesia de San Pablo Apóstol, que es conectada a la Academia (como nuestra parroquia). PARISH CELEBRATION OF THE ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY On Friday, August 14 th, our parish will come together in prayer and song to honor our Blessed Mother. The celebration begins at 6:00 p.m. with a recitation of the Rosary in the languages our parish speaks English / Spanish / Italian. We will meet at the outdoor statue of Our Lady. We will also bless the rosaries that our parishioners made on Wednesday, August 12 th. The Mass of the Assumption will begin at 7:30 p.m. and will be celebrated in three languages. It should be a wonderful sign to ourselves and our neighbors of our devotion to Mary and our firm belief that through her, we come to Jesus, her son and our Lord. From the Pastor s Desk From time to time, I have been making reference to Pope Francis recent Encyclical Laudato Si. It is a wonderful document, one that I hope many of you will read. One of the recommendations the Pope makes is rather simple, but important the practice of offering a prayer of blessing and thanks to God before eating our meals. I am sure many of us already do this, but the Pope wants us all to do it, as a reminder that we are part of God s creation, and that all we have comes from God. That moment of blessing, however brief, reminds us of our dependence on God for life; it strengthens our feeling of gratitude for the gifts of creation; it acknowledges those who by their labors provide us with these goods; and it reaffirms our solidarity with those in greatest need. (par. 227). Elsewhere in this Bulletin, I offer some samples (in English, Spanish, and Italian) for your use. This Tuesday, I ll be taking part in National Night Out. You will find more information about this outdoor activity elsewhere in this Bulletin. I hope to see many of you there. Es un documento maravilloso que espero que muchos de ustedes hayan de leer. Una de las recomendaciones que el Papa hace es más bien simple, pero muy importante. Es la práctica de ofrecer una oración pidiendo bendición y dándole las gracias a Dios antes de consumir nuestras comidas. Estoy seguro que muchos de nosotros ya hacemos esto, pero el Papa quiere que todos lo hagamos, como un recordatorio de que somos parte de la creación de Dios y que todo lo que tenemos proviene de Dios. "Ese momento de bendición, aunque breve, nos alerta sobre nuestra dependencia en Dios para tener vida, fortalece nuestro sentimiento de gratitud por los regalos de la creación y reconoce a los que nos suplieron estos bienes por medio de su trabajo. Community Affairs 2015 NATIONAL NIGHT OUT Each year in the summer, the 110 th Precinct Community Council joins police precincts all over New York City and the whole country in observing National Night Out. It will take place on Tuesday, August 4 th, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park (entrance on 111 th Street between 54 th and 55 th Avenue). The NYPD activities will include: crime prevention; domestic violence awareness; child safety; highway safety; 110 th Precinct Auxiliary; Youth Explorers; bicycle safety; transit safety. There will also be the annual Softball Game between 110 th Precinct officers and Queens Center Mall employees. Many more activities for children and adults are planned, and food, too!
