2 Saint Charles Parish San Diego / Imperial Beach Page Two TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Before long, as we ve seen, the four newly constructed Eucharistic Prayers became two. The old Roman Canon faded away into relative disuse after 1600 unbroken years, sometimes heard only at Christmas Midnight Mass or the Easter Vigil. The new Eucharistic Prayer IV, at least in its English form, grates a bit on most hearers, and besides is meant only for Ordinary Time. The reconstruction of the ancient prayer of Hippolytus, Eucharistic Prayer II, is the most familiar, but its brevity sometimes creates an imbalance with the Liturgy of the Word. No wonder that as soon as the creative juices began to flow at the Vatican, people worldwide were trying their hands at new prayers. In 1967, even before the final shape of the new Mass was announced, bishops were asking to adapt that celebration for the needs of children. They wanted to clarify what ought to happen when large numbers of children are at Mass: what could be adapted, omitted, or shortened. Experimentation had already begun. Separate Liturgies of the Word for children were by this time commonplace in Holland and elsewhere in Europe. Catechists were saying that many of our liturgical forms were too complex for the children in their charge, and priests were making adaptations on their own. 5 Page Five Vigésimo Séptimo Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario 8 de Octubre de 2017 TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE La Virgen María tiene siglos de estar apareciéndose a los cristianos. Aún antes de que fuese asunta al cielo, ella ya se le había aparecido al apóstol Santiago en Zaragoza, España. Según una antigua leyenda, Santiago llegó a tierra española en el año 40 para predicar el Evangelio. Tuvo poco éxito y desanimado pensaba sacudirse de los pies el polvo de aquella tierra y buscar convertir otras gentes. Mientras estaba en oración, María, la madre de Jesús, se le apareció con palabras de consuelo, ánimo y un pequeño obsequio. Le dio una imagen de ella misma sobre un pilar y con el Niño Jesús en brazos. En esa tierra ella pidió la construcción de un templo donde ella misma sería altar para la gloria de Dios. Santiago mismo construyó la primera iglesia donde hoy se encuentra una gran basílica en honor de Nuestra Señora del Pilar. En el siglo XVIII, el Papa Clemente XII declaró el 12 de octubre como su fiesta en memoria de la llegada de los europeos al continente americano. De María vienen los principios del Día de la Raza.
