2 Saint Charles Parish San Diego / Imperial Beach Page Two From the Pastor Many of Jesus disciples who were listening said, This saying is hard; who can accept it?. As a result of this, many of his disciples returned to their former way of life and no longer accompanied him. Jesus then said to the Twelve, Do you also want to leave? Simon Peter answered him, Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God. The quote above comes from today s gospel passage. For the past five weeks we ve been reading from the sixth chapter of John s Gospel wherein Jesus has been telling the crowds, and us, about his presence in the Eucharist and the power of receiving him bodily. From our perspective it is wonderful to know that it really is Him whom we receive in Holy Communion. But not everybody was thrilled with his teaching. In fact, when Jesus insisted that they eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood many said this is too much. Even those who were his disciples left him over this teaching. I find Jesus response to this very interesting. He does not say, Hey guys, come back! I was only speaking metaphorically and symbolically! No, in fact he turns to his closest friends, the Twelve Apostles, and asks them if they too want to leave him over this teaching. It is almost as if to say, If you cannot accept this teaching, perhaps you should go. Thankfully, Peter, who responds on behalf of the Twelve raises his voice and makes a beautiful act of faith. Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God. It is this act of faith in Christ that enable him to receive the great graces of God necessary for him to carry out the mission God intended for him. Likewise with us. An act of faith like Peter s can and will open up our lives to an amazing life of grace. Too often we are pushed by the culture we live in to abandon our faith in the teachings of Jesus and the Church he established. We are told to be reasonable, relevant, and tolerant of the sinfulness that destroys the spiritual and moral fabric of society in general, and the individual in particular. That teaching is too hard! You are way off base! You are just a bunch of backwards Catholic hicks to believe what you do! The question then becomes, Who will you follow? Will it be the worldly voices without morals, conscience, or Christ or will it be Christ himself? I pray it is the latter. I pray you side with Joshua as we read in the first reading today. When they stood in ranks before God, Joshua addressed all the people: If it does not please you to serve the LORD, decide today whom you will serve, the gods your fathers served beyond the River or the gods of the Amorites in whose country you are now dwelling. As for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.

A Prayer for Priests +Lord Jesus, we your people pray to You for our priests. You have given them to us for OUR needs. We pray for them in THEIR needs. We know that You have made them priests in the likeness of your own priesthood. You have consecrated them, set them aside, anointed them, filled them with the Holy Spirit, appointed them to teach, to preach, to minister, to console, to forgive, and to feed us with Your Body and Blood. 5 Page Five Vigésimo Primer Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario 23 de Agosto de 2015 Del Pastor Al oír sus palabras, muchos discípulos de Jesús dijeron: "Este modo de hablar es intolerable, quién puede admitir eso? ". Desde entonces, muchos de sus discípulos se echaron para atrás y ya no querían andar con el. Entonces Jesús les dijo a los Doce: " También ustedes quieren dejarme?" Simón Pedro les respondió: "Señor, a quién iremos? Tú tienes palabras de vida eterna; y nosotros creemos y sabemos que tú eres el Santo de Dios." La cita anterior proviene de pasaje del evangelio de hoy. Durante las cinco últimas semanas hemos estado leyendo del sexto capítulo del evangelio de San Juan donde Jesús ha estado diciéndole a la gente, y a nosotros, de su presencia en la Eucaristía y del poder de recibirle a él corporalmente. Desde nuestro punto de vista es maravilloso saber que realmente lo recibimos a El en la Sagrada Comunión. Pero no todo el mundo estaba encantado con su enseñanza. De hecho, cuando Jesús insistió en que "coman la carne del Hijo del Hombre y beban su sangre" muchos dijeron esto es demasiado. Incluso aquellos que fueron sus discípulos lo abandonaron en esta enseñanza. Encuentro la respuesta de Jesús a esto es muy interesante. No les dice: " Hey chicos, regresen! Yo sólo hablaba metafóricamente y simbólicamente!" Pero no, de hecho él se dirige a sus amigos más cercanos, los Doce Apóstoles, y les pregunta si también ellos quieren alejarse de él por esta enseñanza. Es casi como decir, "Si no pueden aceptar esta enseñanza, tal vez deberían irse." Afortunadamente, Pedro, que responde en nombre de los Doce levanta la voz y hace un hermoso acto de fe. "Señor, a quién iremos? Tú tienes palabras de vida eterna; y nosotros creemos y sabemos que tú eres el Santo de Dios." Esta es la ley de la fe en Cristo que le permitió recibir las grandes gracias de Dios necesarias para que él llevara a cabo la misión que Dios destino para él. De igual manera con nosotros. Un acto de fe como la de Pedro puede y abrirá nuestras vidas a una increíble vida de gracia. Muy a menudo nos vemos empujados por la cultura en que vivimos a abandonar nuestra fe en las enseñanzas de Jesús y de la Iglesia que él estableció. Se nos dice que debemos ser razonables, pertinentes, y tolerante a la pecaminosidad que destruye el tejido espiritual y moral de la sociedad en general, y del individuo en particular. "Esa enseñanza es muy difícil! Esta fuera de base!. Son un montón de Católicos atrasados que creen en lo que haces!" entonces la pregunta es: " A quién vas a seguir?" Será a las voces mundanas sin moral, ni conciencia de Cristo o será a Cristo mismo? Le pido a Dios que sea la última. Yo les ruego que tomen el lado de Josué como leemos hoy en la primera lectura. Cuando todos estuvieron en presencia del Señor, Josué le dijo al pueblo: "Si no les agrada servir al Señor, digan aquí y ahora a quien quieren servir: a los dioses a los que sirvieron sus antepasados al otro lado del río Éufrates, a los dioses de los amorreos, en cuyo país ustedes habitan? En cuanto a mí toca, mi familia y yo serviremos al SEÑOR."
