2 Good Shepherd Catholic Church and School February 2, 2014 The Presentation of the Lord This Gospel scene reveals the mystery of the Son of the Virgin, the consecrated One of the Father who came into the world to do his will faithfully (cf. Heb 10:5-7). Simeon identifies him as a light for revelation to the Gentiles (Lk 2:32) and announces with prophetic words his supreme offering to God and his final victory (cf. Lk 2:32-35). This is the meeting point of the two Testaments, Old and New. Jesus enters the ancient temple; he who is the new Temple of God: he comes to visit his people, thus bringing to fulfilment obedience to the Law and ushering in the last times of salvation. The Presentation of the Lord Mal 3:1-4; Ps 24; Heb 2:14-18; Lk 2:22-40 or 2:22-32 On today s Feast we contemplate the Lord Jesus, whom Mary and Joseph bring to the Temple to present him to the Lord (Lk 2:22). I would like to suggest three brief thoughts for reflection on this Feast. The first: the evangelical image of the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple contains the fundamental symbol of light; the light that comes from Christ and shines on Mary and Joseph, on Simeon and Anna, and through them, on everyone. Secondly, the evangelical image portrays the prophecy, a gift of the Holy Spirit. In contemplating the Child Jesus, Simeon and Anna foresee his destiny of death and Resurrection for the salvation of all peoples and they proclaim this mystery as universal salvation. Thirdly, the evangelical image of the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple demonstrates the wisdom of Simeon and Anna, the wisdom of a life completely dedicated to the search for God s Face, for his signs, for his will; a life dedicated to listening to and proclaiming his word. Faciem tuam, Domine, requiram : Your face, Lord, do I seek (Ps 27 [26]:8)... At this moment, my thoughts turn with special affection to all of the consecrated men and women throughout the world and I entrust them to the Blessed Virgin Mary. When Mary and Joseph brought Jesus to the Temple, they offered a sacrificial gift in accord with the dictate in the law of the Lord. An offering of a specific size or kind is not dictated when we bring our gifts to the altar at Mass. Is my gift reflective of the many blessings I have received? One in Faith, One in Hope and One in Charity The Scriptures are unambiguous about God s concern for the poor. Open your hand to the poor and needy neighbor in your land (Deut. 15:11; Isa. 58:6-12. As the example of the saints has taught us, in loving and serving the poor, we too love and serve Jesus Himself. If you have not already responded to Archbishop Wenski s letter received by mail, please take time to consider the pledge you will wish to make, a pledge that gives witness to your gratitude for God s blessings in your life. 3 2 de febrero de 2014 La Presentación del Señor Good Shepherd Catholic Church and School La Presentación del Señor Mal 3:1-4; Sal 24; Hb 2:14-18; Lc 2:22-40 or 2:22-32 En la fiesta de hoy contemplamos a Jesús nuestro Señor, a quien María y José llevan al templo para presentarlo al Señor (Lc 2, 22). Quiero proponer tres breves pensamientos para la reflexión en esta fiesta. El primero: el icono evangélico de la Presentación de Jesús en el templo contiene el símbolo fundamental de la luz; la luz que, partiendo de Cristo, se irradia sobre María y José, sobre Simeón y Ana y, a través de ellos, sobre todos. En segundo lugar, el icono evangélico manifiesta la profecía, don del Espíritu Santo. Simeón y Ana, contemplan al Niño Jesús, vislumbran su destino de muerte y de resurrección para la salvación de todas las naciones y anuncian este misterio como salvación universal. En tercer lugar, el icono evangélico de la Presentación de Jesús en el templo manifiesta la sabiduría de Simeón y Ana, la sabiduría de una vida dedicada totalmente a la búsqueda del rostro de Dios, de sus signos, de su voluntad; una vida dedicada a la escucha y al anuncio de su Palabra. Faciem tuam, Domine, requiram : Tu rostro buscaré, Señor (Sal 26, 8 En este momento, mi pensamiento va con especial afecto a todos los consagrados y las consagradas, en todos los rincones de la tierra, y los encomiendo a la santísima Virgen María. Benedicto XVI En esta escena evangélica se revela el misterio del Hijo de la Virgen, el consagrado del Padre, que vino al mundo para cumplir fielmente su voluntad (cf. Hb 10, 5-7). Simeón lo señala como luz para alumbrar a las naciones (Lc 2, 32) y anuncia con palabras proféticas su ofrenda suprema a Dios y su victoria final (cf. Lc 2, 32-35). Es el encuentro de los dos Testamentos, Antiguo y Nuevo. Jesús entra en el antiguo templo, él que es el nuevo Templo de Dios: viene a visitar a su pueblo, llevando a cumplimiento la obediencia a la Ley e inaugurando los tiempos finales de la salvación. Resumen del Sacrificio ofrecido a la Parroquia (Ofertorio Dominical Regular) Unidos en la Fe, Unidos en la Esperanza y Unidos en la Caridad Las Escrituras son inequívocas acerca de la preocupación de Dios por los pobres. Debes abrir tu mano a tu prójimo pobre y necesitado (Deut. 15:11; Isa. 58:6-12). Como el ejemplo de los santos nos ha enseñado, al amar y servir a los pobres, también amamos y servimos al propio Jesús.
