3 CATHOLIC CONVERSATIONS ON THE SCRIPTURES Archdiocese of Miami - Ministry of Christian Formation January 17, nd Sunday in Ordinary Time (Cycle C) Gospel reading: A reading from the holy Gospel according to John 2:1-11 [To be read aloud] There was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus and his disciples were also invited to the wedding. When the wine ran short, the mother of Jesus said to him, They have no wine. And Jesus said to her, Woman, how does your concern affect me? My hour has not yet come. His mother said to the servers, Do whatever he tells you. Now there were six stone water jars there for Jewish ceremonial washing, each holding twenty to thirty gallons. Jesus told them, Fill the jars with water. So they filled them to the brim. Then he told them, Draw some out now and take it to the headwaiter. So they took it. And when the headwaiter tasted the water that had become wine, without knowing where it came from although the servers who had drawn the water knew the headwaiter called the bridegroom and said to him, Everyone serves good wine first, and then when people have drunk freely, an inferior one; but you have kept the good wine until now. Jesus did this as the beginning of his signs* at Cana in Galilee and so revealed his glory, and his disciples began to believe in him. *The first of seven in the Gospel of John. Brief commentary: Just as the star guiding the Magi was an Epiphany (manifestation of God), this first miracle of Jesus in the Gospel of John is another epiphany that sparks the faith of the disciples. For the first time, Jesus allows his friends to see his glory and brings them into the mystery of God present in him. The time of salvation begins with the symbol of a wedding feast inviting all believers to joy and celebration. This account is part of the evidence that the Evangelist offers to prove that Jesus is truly the Son of God and that the messianic era has arrived. What is changed is not simply water, but water for Old Testament ceremonials washing which has now become the new and abundant wine provided by the messianic bridegroom, Jesus himself. Today s reading offers three significant messages: * Jesus words to Mary show that Jesus did not work miracles to help his family and friends, as in the apocryphal gospels. * The hour is that of Jesus passion, death, resurrection and ascension (see Jn 13:1). * Jesus is the source of living water (Baptism), as well as the bread and wine (Eucharist), though it is not apparent to everyone. For our shared or personal reflection: After a brief pause for silent reflection share your answers, ideas or feelings. 1.Am I, like Mary, attentive to the needs around me? Do I try to do something to help? 2.Am I convinced that being a true disciple means to always do whatever he tells us? Give concrete examples. 4 REFLEXIONES CATÓLICAS SOBRE LA BIBLIA Arquidiócesis de Miami - Ministerio de formación cristiana 17 de enero de do Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario (Ciclo C) Lectura del Evangelio según san Juan 2:1-11 [Léase en voz alta] En aquel tiempo, se celebraron unas bodas en Caná de Galilea, y la madre de Jesús era de la fiesta. También fue invitado a la bodas Jesús con sus discípulos. El vino se acabó y la madre de Jesús le dijo: No tienen vino. Jesús le respondió: Mujer, cómo se te ocurre? Todavía no ha llegado mi hora. Su madre, empero, dijo a los sirvientes: Hagan todo lo que él les mande. Había allí seis jarrones de piedra, de los que sirven para los ritos de la purificación de los judíos, de unos cien litros de capacidad cada uno. Jesús indicó a los sirvientes: Llenen de agua esas tinajas. Y las llenaron hasta el borde. Saquen ahora, les dijo, y llévenle al mayordomo para que lo pruebe. Y ellos se lo llevaron. El mayordomo probó el agua cambiada en vino, sin saber de dónde le habían sacado; los sirvientes sí que lo sabían, pues habían sacado el agua. Llamó al esposo y le dijo: Todo el mundo pone al principio el vino mejor, y cuando todos han bebido bastante, se sirve un vino inferior; pero tú has dejado el mejor vino para el final. Éste fue el principio de las señales milagrosas* que hizo Jesús. Lo hizo en Caná de Galilea. Así manifestó su gloria y sus discípulos creyeron en él. Después de esto, Jesús bajó a Cafarnaún y con él su madre, sus hermanos y sus discípulos. Y permanecieron allí solamente algunos días. *El primero de siete signos en el Evangelio de Juan. Comentario breve: Del mismo modo que la estrella guiando a los Magos de Oriente fue una epifanía (manifestación de Dios), este primer milagro de Jesús en el Evangelio de Juan es otra epifanía que enciende la fe de sus discípulos. Por primera vez, Jesús deja ver su gloria a sus compañeros, quienes entran en el misterio de Dios presente en El. Llega el tiempo y el comienzo de la hora de la salvación bajo el signo de un banquete de abundante vino capaz de alegrar la vida y el corazón de los creyentes. El relato es parte de la evidencia que el evangelista ofrece para probar que Jesús es verdaderamente el Hijo de Dios, y anuncia la ineficacia de los viejos ritos superados por el vino nuevo de la nueva alianza. El agua de las ceremonias de purificación del Antiguo Testamento ha sido cambiada por el vino nuevo de la era Mesiánica, y el novio mesiánico que provee este vino de alta calidad es el mismo Jesús. La lectura de hoy nos presenta tres ideas importantes: La respuesta de Jesús a María indica que para El, la hora estaba marcada por el sufrimiento en la cruz y no había llegado todavía. (Ver Juan 13:1) * Jesús no acostumbraba a hacer milagros para ayudar a su familia como nos relatan algunos evangelios apócrifos. * María es una mujer de delicada atención, preocupación y acción por los demás. Para la reflexión personal o comunitaria: Después de una pausa breve para reflexionar en silencio, comparta con otros sus ideas o sentimientos. 1. Me doy cuenta de las necesidades que hay a mi alrededor; trato de hacer algo? 2. Estoy convencido de que el verdadero discipulado cristiano consiste en hacer lo que El diga?
