2 Good Shepherd Catholic Church and School February 9, th Sunday in Ordinary Time In this weekend s readings and psalm, the prevailing theme is that of light: We are the light of the world; our light breaks forth like the dawn; our light shines in the darkness; our light reflects generosity and justice. Good stewards know they are the lamp, and Christ is the flame that, through them, illuminates the earth. They know that they carry Christ s light in their hearts, and let it shine through their words and deeds. What are we doing to shine Christ s light on the hungry, the homeless and others most in need of God s mercy? How do we exercise good stewardship over the light of Christ that burns within each of us? Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time Is 58:7-10; Ps 112; 1 Cor 2:1-5; Mt 5:13-16 In this Sunday s Gospel the Lord Jesus tells his disciples: You are the salt of the earth... You are the light of the world (Mt 5:13,14). With these richly evocative images he wishes to pass on to them the meaning of their mission and their witness. Salt, in the cultures of the Middle East, calls to mind several values such as the Covenant, solidarity, life and wisdom. Light is the first work of God the Creator and is a source of life; the word of God is compared to light, as the Psalmist proclaims: Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path (Ps 119[118]:105). And, again in today s Liturgy, the Prophet Isaiah says: If you pour yourself out for the hungry and satisfy the desire of the afflicted, then shall your light rise in the darkness and your gloom be as the noonday (58:10). Wisdom sums up in itself the beneficial effects of salt and light: in fact, disciples of the Lord are called to give a new taste to the world and to keep it from corruption with the wisdom of God, which shines out in its full splendour on the Face of the Son because he is the true light that enlightens every man (Jn 1:9). United to him, in the darkness of indifference and selfishness, Christians can diffuse the light of God s love, true wisdom that gives meaning to human life and action. The Gospel today reminds us that our lives and our deeds must serve as examples to others, pointing the way to the Father. Not for our own benefit do we labor, but so that others may see our good works and give glory to our Father in heaven. One in Faith, One in Hope and One in Charity The Scriptures are unambiguous about God s concern for the poor. Open your hand to the poor and needy neighbor in your land (Deut. 15:11; Isa. 58:6-12). As the example of the saints has taught us, in loving and serving the poor, we too love and serve Jesus Himself. If you have not already responded to Archbishop Wenski s letter received by mail, please take time to consider the pledge you will wish to make, a pledge that gives witness to your gratitude for God s blessings in your life. Your generous and unwavering support of the ABCD is a witness to your faith. 3 9 de febrero de to Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario Good Shepherd Catholic Church and School Quinto Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario Is 58:7-10; Sal 112; 1 Cor 2:1-5; Mt 5:13-16 En el Evangelio de este domingo el Señor Jesús dice a sus discípulos: Vosotros sois la sal de la tierra... Vosotros sois la luz del mundo (Mt 5, 13.14). Mediante estas imágenes llenas de significado, quiere transmitirles el sentido de su misión y de su testimonio. La sal, en la cultura de Oriente Medio, evoca varios valores como la alianza, la solidaridad, la vida y la sabiduría. La luz es la primera obra de Dios creador y es fuente de la vida; la misma Palabra de Dios es comparada con la luz, como proclama el salmista: Lámpara es tu palabra para mis pasos, luz en mi sendero (Sal 119, 105). Y también en la liturgia de hoy, el profeta Isaías dice: Cuando ofrezcas al hambriento de lo tuyo y sacies el alma afligida, brillará tu luz en las tinieblas, tu oscuridad como el mediodía (58, 10). La sabiduría resume en sí los efectos benéficos de la sal y de la luz: de hecho, los discípulos del Señor están llamados a dar nuevo sabor al mundo, y a preservarlo de la corrupción, con la sabiduría de Dios, que resplandece plenamente en el rostro del Hijo, porque él es la luz verdadera que ilumina a todo hombre (Jn 1, 9). Unidos a él, los cristianos pueden difundir en medio de las tinieblas de la indiferencia y del egoísmo la luz del amor de Dios, verdadera sabiduría que da significado a la existencia y a la actuación de los hombres. Benedicto XVI En las lecturas y en el salmo de este fin de semana, el tema que prevalece es el de la luz: Nosotros somos la luz del mundo; nuestra luz ilumina como el amanecer; nuestra luz brilla en la obscuridad; nuestra luz refleja generosidad y justicia. Los buenos corresponsables saben que ellos son la lámpara, y que Cristo es la flama, la cual a través de ellos, ilumina la tierra. Ellos saben que llevan la luz de Cristo en sus corazones, y que la dejan brillar a través de sus palabras y obras. Qué estamos haciendo nosotros para que la luz de Cristo brille sobre los hambrientos, los desamparados y aquellos con más necesidad de la misericordia de Dios? Cómo ejercitamos nosotros la buena corresponsabilidad de la luz de Cristo que arde dentro de cada uno de nosotros? Unidos en la Fe, Unidos en la Esperanza y Unidos en la Caridad Las Escrituras son inequívocas acerca de la preocupación de Dios por los pobres. Debes abrir tu mano a tu prójimo pobre y necesitado (Deut. 15:11; Isa. 58:6-12). Como el ejemplo de los santos nos ha enseñado, al amar y servir a los pobres también nosotros amamos y servimos al propio Jesús. Si usted no ha respondido a la carta del Arzobispo Wenski recibida por correo, por favor, tómese el tiempo necesario para considerar la promesa que desea hacer, una promesa que dé testimonio de su gratitud por las bendiciones que Dios ha puesto en su vida.
