2 1. OBJETIVOS Al finalizar el tema deberá: Realizar una correcta indicación farmacéutica a un paciente con tos. Detectar los síntomas de derivación al médico. CAUSAS DE DERIVACIÓN PACIENTES CON TOS QUE DEBEN DERIVARSE AL MÉDICO Duración de la tos: tos de más de 3 semanas (prolongada o crónica) Indicadores de alarma (tos acompañada de): - Dificultad respiratoria o disnea, ruidos en el pecho (sibilancias) o esputo con sangre. - Fiebre elevada (superior a 40,5º C), o con una duración superior a las horas (independientemente de su valor). - Cuando la tos es en paroxismos y acompañada de vómitos o del típico gallo. 5. RECOMENDACIONES PARA EL TRATAMIENTO DE LA TOS Como norma general la tos productiva en el contexto de un proceso infeccioso respiratorio no debe ser suprimida. 8 5.1. Tratamiento no farmacológico En principio su tratamiento siempre debe ser sintomático y es frecuente que no requiera ningún medicamento. Las medidas generales como la hidratación adecuada, la humidificación del ambiente, levantar la cabecera de la cama o el uso de caramelos sin azúcar o pastillas de chupar pueden aliviar la tos. 6.
