2 1 Introduce the Book Introduce the Nonfiction Genre: Procedural Text Display the book cover. Read the title and the author s name. Te dice el título algo acerca de una persona o una cosa? You may want to draw an outline of a house or apartment building on the chalkboard and add labels as children suggest them. techo chimenea ventana puerta Encourage children to discuss the different types of houses or the different sizes and shapes of houses as they offer their descriptions. Conclude the discussion by helping children understand that there are many different kinds of houses. Preview and Predict Point out the photographs of the houses on page 1. Track the print as you read the heading, Qué necesitas. Tell children that this is a list of the materials needed to make the house in this book. Explain that a list has items written one under the other. Numbered steps: Page through the book and ask children to point out and name the numbers. Tell them that when authors write about how to make or do something, they often use numbers to show the steps to take. Visual representation of finished product: Point out the photograph on page 8. Explain that it shows several examples of houses that have already been made and gives readers an idea of what their houses should look like. ESL/ELL Strategy Help children understand the meanings of house and neighborhood by pointing to one house in the photograph on page 2, as you say the word in English. Then point to all three houses as you say: The houses are in a neighborhood. Have children repeat the words as they can. If possible, begin the lesson by connecting the English words house and neighborhood to the corresponding words in the children s native languages. Reread the Book Distribute the materials necessary to make a house. Then have children follow the directions as they reread the book and make a house of their own. After children have completed the procedure, use the graphic organizer on the back cover to help them summarize the steps they followed. Discuss with students elements specific to procedural texts. Place the book and the necessary materials in a classroom center, and encourage children to reread the book and make additional houses during free class time. Answers to Student Book Questions 1. 5 3 Learn Through the Text SOCIAL STUDIES: Neighborhoods and Communities Use Haz una casa to reinforce children s understanding of what a neighborhood is. Explain that a neighborhood is made up of homes and other buildings in a small area of a town or city. Ask children to name things in their neighborhood. Encourage them to describe different buildings. Have children use their paper bag houses to create a neighborhood on a rug or mat. As a group, talk about the neighborhood using words such as tienda, casa, edificio de apartamentos, and escuela. COMPREHENSION: Identify Steps in a Procedure Have children take turns identifying each numbered step in the book. Reinforce the language of the process by prompting with questions such as Qué haces primero? Qué número va primero? Using the pictures and words from the completed graphic organizer, cut apart the steps and mix up the order. Ask children to work together to put the pictures and words in the correct order. For additional practice with this skill, use the same technique, and have children identify the steps in a classroom routine such as a fire drill. WRITING Write a Procedure Have children use what they have learned about procedural text to write a book highlighting a daily classroom procedure. New students or visitors can read the procedure to find out how to join in. Begin by having children recall the procedures they follow for a classroom routine such as morning circle time. On chart paper, list each item as children offer it, even if it is not in the correct order. Review the list, and have children put the list in the correct order. Begin with the first step and number it. Pass the marker to the child who identifies the second item and have him or her write the number 2 next to it. Continue the same procedure for the list. Review the order of the list before writing each numbered item on individual sheets of paper. Have children work with partners to illustrate the items on the pages. As a class, assemble the book. Remind children that the steps must be in order. Create a cover for the book and bind it. Make the book available to new students or visitors who come to the classroom.
