Nonfiction Genre Procedural Text Nonfiction Features Headings Labels Materials List Numbered Steps Text Structure Sequential Description Vocabulary sentir objeto Comprehension Identify Steps in a Process/Procedure Writing Write a procedure. Content Area Connection: Physical Science Understand observable properties. 2 1 Introduce the Book Introduce the Nonfiction Genre: Procedural Text Display the book cover. Read the title and the author s name. Explain that in this book, the author gives instructions on how to play a game. Tell children that the author uses numbers to order the steps the reader needs to follow. Nonfiction Text Features Labels: Turn to page 2 and point out the label underneath each small photograph. Tell children that these labels provide information about the photographs. Explain that unlike other labels they may have seen before, these labels do not actually tell what the objects in the photographs are. Instead, each label describes the object. Read aloud each label, tracking the print as you read. Materials list: Turn to page 3. Track the print as you read the heading of the list, Qué necesitas. Tell children that this list shows the materials needed to play a game. Point out that a list has items written one under another. Point to each item in the list as you read it aloud. Numbered steps: Page through the book and ask children to point to and name the numbers in front of each step. Explain that authors often use numbers when they write about how to do something. The numbers help readers keep track of the order of the steps. Activate or Build Background Pass a feather around the classroom and have children touch it. Ask them to describe how the feather feels. Then ask them to name other things that feel soft. You may want to record children s responses in a chart like the one below. Continue by having children brainstorm objects that fit into the following categories: smooth, hard, bumpy. Have children look at the photographs on pages 1 and 3.

Use Picture Clues; Activate Prior Knowledge pages 2 3 Vocabulary sentir Read aloud the text on the pages, tracking the print as you read. Point out the materials box on page 3. Recall and Retell; Make Inferences Read the numbers and the text aloud, tracking the print. Predict FOCUS ON NONFICTION FEATURES Point to the heading. Point to the numbers next to each step. Qué significan estos números? Por qué están aquí?

4 pages 6 7 Read aloud the numbers and the main text. De qué se trata este juego? Summarize Quién habla en estas páginas? Cómo lo sabes? Use Graphic Sources Read aloud the text in the speech balloons. Personal Response ESL/ELL Strategy Help children understand the meaning of game by displaying pictures of people playing various games and sports. Point to a picture and say, [Name of game] is a game people play. Point to another picture and say, [Name of game] is a game people play. As you go through the pictures, ask children to volunteer words that describe the games. You may want to ask children who feel comfortable with English to describe games they play in their countries of origin. Reread the Book Gather the materials necessary to play the game, and divide the class into pairs. Then have children follow the directions as they reread the book and play the game on their own. (If time or resources are limited, make one box as a class and have children take turns hiding and guessing the identity of objects.) After children have completed the procedure, use the graphic organizer on the back cover to help them summarize the steps they followed. Discuss the description text structure in the book. Answers to Student Book Questions 1. 3. Las respuestas variarán.

5 3 Learn Through the Text SCIENCE: Bring Me the Balls Use Qué es esto? to reinforce the concepts of describing and grouping objects. Obtain a variety of sports balls (basketball, baseball, football, and so on) and show the balls to the class. Have children brainstorm three words that describe each ball (redonda, blanca, lisa, and so on). You may want to write the words on the chalkboard under each ball s name. Divide children into groups and distribute one ball to each group. Then say, Tráeme las pelotas que sean redondas. Any group holding a ball that fits that description should have one member bring the ball to the front of the room. Point to the collection of balls and say, Éste es un grupo de pelotas redondas. Return the balls to the groups. Then repeat the activity a few more times, using different descriptive words to group the balls. COMPREHENSION: Identify Steps in a Process/Procedure Remind children that Qué es esto? teaches you how to play a game. Tell them that books that teach readers how to do something often list the directions in steps. The steps have numbers that let readers know the order in which the steps should be done. Turn to pages 6 and 7 and reread the text of Steps 3 and 4. Have children tell what they do when they set a table for a meal. Help them list the steps in order. WRITING Write a Procedure Have children use what they have learned about procedural text to write a class book about how to play a game. Brainstorm with children games they like to play. With the class, decide on one game to write about. Ask children to suggest materials needed for the game. List them on a sheet of chart paper. Ask children to name each step involved in playing the game. As children respond, write each numbered step on a separate sheet of paper. Invite volunteers to draw pictures next to the steps, as appropriate. Have children suggest a title for the cover. Bind the pages together. If possible, have another class make a book. Then have the classes switch books and play the games.
