Encourage children to think about what they do with their own family members. Then ask: Qué pueden hacer juntos los nietos y sus abuelos? Introduce the Text Guide children through the text, helping with unfamiliar words so they can read the text successfully. Here are some suggestions: Page 2: Explain that this book tells about what grandchildren can do with their grandpas. Suggested language: Vayan a la página 2. Qué hacen la niña y su abuelo? The writer uses the same language on most pages, changing only one or two words in those sentences. Choices for Support Concepts of Print Reinforce the concept of matching one spoken word to one written word during reading. Point to each word on a page as you slowly read the sentence. Have children do the same. Phonemic Awareness and Word Work Provide practice as needed with words and sounds, using one of the following activities: Blend the Sounds Say words sound by sound and ask children to say the words. Begin with /m/ /i/. Cuál es la palabra? (mi) Continue with these words: /k/ /o/ /m/ /e/ (come), /j/ /u/ /e/ /g/ /a/ (juega), /a/ /b/ /u/ /e/ /l/ /o/ (abuelo). 4 Writing About Reading Vocabulary Practice Read the directions and have children complete the Vocabulario questions on Hoja reproducible 2.1. Responding Have children complete the vocabulary activities on page 11. Building Vocabulary Games Build on the concept of playing games in. Identify the game on page 8 as ajedrez. Suggested language: Pensemos en los juegos que nos gusta jugar. Qué juegos les gustan más? Les gustan más los juegos de mesa o los juegos con balones? As children suggest names of games, write their words and sentences on the board or on chart paper. Begin the list with the words Me gusta jugar. (Possible answers: a las damas, a la rayuela, a saltar a la soga, a las escondidas, a atrapar el balón) After children have made their suggestions, read the list aloud together, pointing to each word. Have the group choose a game they can play together. Writing Prompt Read aloud the following prompt. Have children draw and write their response, using the writing prompt on page 6. Draw a picture.
