2 by Stanford Makishi Build Background Help students use their knowledge of artists to anticipate the text. Build interest by asking questions such as the following: Las personas que pintan cuadros, son la única clase de artistas? Qué otras clases de arte pueden crear los artistas? Read the title and author and talk about the cover illustration. Have students try to guess why the book is titled Artists All Around You. Tell students that this book is informational text, so the words and photos will give factual information about artists. Introduce the Text Guide students through the text, noting important ideas and helping with unfamiliar language and vocabulary so they can read the text successfully. Here are some suggestions: Page 2: Explain that this book is about the work of artists whom students might not know about. Suggested language: Vayan a la página 2 de este libro. Miren el título de la sección Qué es un artista? Cómo responderían esta pregunta? Qué creen que es un artista? Pages 4 5: Read the heading and ask students to study the photo and the inset sketch. Explain that investigar looking at books or doing a web search to learn about a subject is part of a costume designer s job. Qué creen que habrá tenido que investigar el diseñador para diseñar la ropa que está usando la actriz? Pages 6-7: Help students with the pronunciation of architect. Un arquitecto diseña edifi cios. Alguna vez pensaron en cómo se diseñan los edifi cios? Qué hace que un arquitecto sea una clase de artista? Page 8: Have students read the section head, El artista de exhibición.
3 Read Have students read silently while you listen to individual students read. Support their problem solving and fluency as needed. Remind students to use the Analyze/Evaluate Strategy about what they read, then form an opinion about it. and to think Discuss and Revisit the Text Personal Response Invite students to share their personal responses to the story. Suggested language: Qué tipo de artista te gustaría ser? Por qué? Ways of Thinking As you discuss the text, help students understand these points: Thinking Within the Text Thinking Beyond the Text Thinking About the Text There are many different kinds of artists. You can see works of art all around you. Artists in different fields use some of the same tools and go through some of the same steps to create their work. Some things that we may not think of as art are really works of art. If you look closely and think about what you see, you will notice different kinds of art everywhere. Artists have a choice of many different jobs to use their talents. 26. Fountas, I.C. & Pinnell, G.S. Teaching for Comprehending and Fluency, Heinemann, Portsmouth, N.H. The photographs and text work together to help readers understand the work that different kinds of artists do. The section headings help readers know what they will learn from each text section. The author proves his point that you can find art everywhere you look. Choices for Further Support Fluency Invite students to choose a passage from the text and demonstrate phrased fl uent reading. Remind them to read word groups instead of single words. Comprehension Based on your observations of the students reading and discussion, revisit parts of the text to clarify or extend comprehension. Remind students to go back to the text to support their ideas. Phonics/Word Work Provide practice as needed with words and word parts, using examples from the text. Remind students that different suffi xes are used to describe people who perform certain activities. For example, the action pintar es performed by a pintor ; arte is created by an artista. Have students identify other examples with different suffi xes in the text (diseñador, muralista, constructor). 3 Lesson 7:
4 Writing about Reading Critical Thinking Have students complete the Razonamiento crítico questions on Hoja reproducible 7.7. Responding Have students complete the activities at the back of the book. Use the instruction below as needed to reinforce or extend understanding of the comprehension skill. Target Comprehension on Skill Text and Graphic Features Remind students that paying attention to how words and photos work together can help them understand what they are reading. Model the skill, using a Think Aloud like the one below. Think Aloud Cuando leo, pienso por qué el autor incluyó títulos, texto, fotos y leyendas. Mientras leo, miro todas estas características que me dan mucha información. La foto de la página 11 es un ejemplo. Muestra a un artista pintando el rostro de alguien. El propósito de la foto es mostrar que pintar rostros también es un arte! Practice the Skill Have students find two other examples in which they used the photographs and illustrations in the book to help them understand what they were reading. Writing Prompt: Thinking About the Text Have students respond to the prompt on page 6. Remind them that when they think about the text, they reflect back on the text. They notice and evaluate language, genre, literary devices, and how the text is organized. Assessment Prompts Which words from the second paragraph on page 4 help the reader know the meaning of traje? What is the last paragraph on page 1 mainly about? Find the section in the story that shows what a display artist needs to know about tools. 4 Lesson 7:
