2 Jorge el Curioso va de paseo Build Background Read the title to the children and talk with them about what the fictional character Jorge el Curioso is doing in the cover illustration. Encourage children to use their knowledge of types of transportation as they think about the book. Ask a question such as: En qué clases de vehículos les gusta viajar? Introduce the Text Guide children through the text, noting important ideas, and helping with unfamiliar language and vocabulary. Explain important text features, such as the repetition of the phrase Le gusta viajar en. that tells readers about the vehicles. Here are some suggestions: Page 2: Explain that in this book, the fi ctional character Jorge el Curioso likes to ride in or on many different kinds of vehicles. Because this is make believe, this monkey can do things that children can do, like ride on a sled or a bike; he can even do things that children cannot do, like ride on the roof of a bus! Words to Know día mira 2 Lesson 28: Jorge el Curioso va de paseo
3 Read Now have children read Jorge el Curioso va de paseo softly while pointing under each word. Observe children as they read. Respond to the Text Personal Response Invite children to share their personal responses to the story. Begin by asking what they liked best about the book, or what they found most interesting. Suggested language: Les gustaría viajar en los vehículos del cuento? Por qué sí? Por qué no? Ways of Thinking As you discuss the text, make sure children understand these teaching points: Thinking Within the Text Thinking Beyond the Text Thinking About the Text Jorge el Curioso likes to ride on vehicles. He rides on a bike, on a sled, on a bus, in a balloon, and in a rocket. There are a wide range of vehicles available for transportation, from sleds to rockets. Riding in vehicles can be fun, no matter the type of vehicle. The sentence pattern makes the story predictable and easy to read. Most of the vehicles in the story are familiar to children. The author has created an anthropomorphic animal that children can relate to Fountas, I.C. & Pinnell, G.S. Teaching for Comprehending and Fluency, Heinemann, Portsmouth, N.H. Choices for Support Concepts of Print Practice early reading behaviors such as understanding the concept of a sentence as a group of words with ending punctuation. Phonemic Awareness and Word Work Provide practice as needed with words and sounds, using one of the following activities: Listening Game Say each of the following words one at a time: bici, nieve, autobús, globo, cohete. Have children repeat each word, and then say the beginning sound. Rhyming Game Have children listen for words that rhyme. Have children raise their hands if the words rhyme, and keep their hands in their laps if the words do not rhyme. Say pairs of words, for example, bici and Jorge, nieve and llueve, mira and tira, gusta and asusta. How Many Words? Read a sentence from the story, without showing the text. Have children say the sentence with you slowly and hold up one fi nger for each word they hear. Continue with other sentences. 3 Lesson 28: Jorge el Curioso va de paseo
