1 Cruzando El Caribe/Crossing the Caribbean: Identificando sitios críticos de parada para las aves migratorias Neotropicales en el norte de Colombia Un proyecto de SELVA: Investigación para la conservación en el Neotrópico Informe técnico: Darién Monitoreo de la migración durante el 2012 en la Reserva Natural de la Sociedad Civil Tacarcuna Migration monitoring - Darién Autumn 2012 RESUMEN Durante el monitoreo de migración en el Darién Colombiano en el 2012, se registraron más de 700,000 aves migratorias, incluyendo 17% de la población global de Cathartes aura (un gallinazo migratorio) que migra entre Norte y Sur América. En la estación de anillamiento, 2002 aves de 35 especies migratorias fueron capturadas y las recapturas de tres especies mostraron que hicieron paradas de varios días durante las cuales aumentaron sus reservas de energía. Estos hallazgos subrayan que el Darién es un punto de concentración de aves migratorias de importancia internacional, al igual que un sitio de parada clave para algunas especies. SUMMARY Migration monitoring during the autumn of 2012 in the Darién of Colombia resulted in over 700,000 diurnally migrating birds being counted, including 17% of the global population of Turkey Vultures that migrate from North to South America birds of 35 migratory species were captured at a banding station and recaptures revealed that three species made multi-day stopovers during which they were able to increase their energy reserves. These findings highlight the Darién as an internationally important bottleneck for migratory birds, as well as a key stopover region for a range of species.

2 DATOS DE UBICACIÓN Y MÉTODOS / LOCATION DATA AND METHODOLOGY Donde/Where: Reserva Tacarcuna, Sapzurro, Municipio de Acandí - Chocó, Colombia (08 39'38"N, 77 22'07"W) Rango de fechas/dates: 01 Septiembre 30 Noviembre 2012 Métodos/Methods: Capturas diarias con redes de niebla (estación de 10 redes), transectos de observación y conteos estacionarios de rapaces y golondrinas. Daily captures with mist-nets, transects and stationary counts of raptors and swallows. Hábitat muestreado/habitat: Selva húmeda tropical de tierras bajas. Lowland tropical forest. Aves migratorias anilladas/migrants banded: 2002 individuos de 35 especies Aves migratorias observadas/migration count totals: 725,346 individuos de 58 especies Total de especies migratorias/total number of migratory species: 65 especies RESULTADOS Los resultados del segundo año de monitoreo de la migración del otoño en el Darién Colombiano, confirmaron que ésta región es un punto de importancia para un amplio rango de aves migratorias, concentrando millones de aves en un corredor delgado de tierra. El efecto de concentración es especialmente notable para tres especies de rapaces, Cathartes aura, Buteo platypterus y Buteo swainsonii, de las cuales se registró un porcentaje importante de sus poblaciones globales entre la mitad de octubre y el fin de noviembre (Tabla 1). Otras migratorias diurnas también fueron registradas en grandes números, como las golondrinas y además hubo conteos altos del chotacabra Chordeiles minor y del vencejo Chaetura pelagica (Tabla 2). En la estación de anillamiento del bosque se registraron bastantes aves migratorias terrestres (Fig. 1). Además de tener tasas de captura altas, el bosque también mantiene una mayor diversidad de especies comparado con otros sitios del norte de Colombia como la Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta (Apéndice 1). Un resultado muy importante de la estación de anillamiento fue la recaptura de más de 50 individuos de tres especies de Zorzales migratorios (Catharus). Estos datos revelaron que las tres especies aumentan sus reservas de energía cuando paran en el Darién por varios días. La conclusión es que el Darién es un sitio de parada importante, donde ciertos individuos pueden acumular la energía que requieren para la próxima etapa de su migración. Finalmente, tuvimos algunas capturas de especies cuyas rutas migratorias o sitios de parada aún son poco conocidos o para las cuales su distribución en Colombia no es clara, incluyendo capturas de Coccyzus erythropthalmus (1), Vermivora chrysoptera (1), Dumetella carolinensis (4), Geothlypis trichas (1), Helmitherus vermivorum (1) y Geothlypis formosus (2). RESULTS The results from the second year of monitoring autumn migration in the Darién of Colombia confirmed the finding from 2011that this region acts a bottleneck for a wide range of migratory birds, concentrating millions of birds into a thin corridor of land. This concentrating effect is particularly notable migratory raptors of three species, Turkey Vultures, Broad-winged Hawks and Swainson s Hawks, with a significant proportion of the population of these species being counted between mid-october and late November (Table 1). Other diurnal migrants were also recorded in extremely large numbers, particularly swallows but there were also excellent counts of Common Nighthawks and Chimney Swifts (Table 2). At our banding station in the forest, large numbers of migratory landbirds were also recorded (Fig. 1). Aside supporting very high capture rates, the forest also holds an excellent diversity of species relative to other sites in northern Colombia such as the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta (Appendix 1). An important result from the banding station in 2012 was the recapture of over 50 individuals of

3 three species of Catharus thrushes. These data revealed that all three species were capable of increasing their energy reserves when pausing their migration in the Darién for several days. This is an important finding that not only demonstrates that the Darién is a major bottleneck for migratory birds but that it is also an important stopover site, where certain individuals can accumulate the energy they need for the next stage of their migration. Also of note, was the capture of several species whose migration routes and stopover sites are little known or whose presence in Colombia is not well documented including captures of Black-billed Cuckoo (1), Golden-winged Warbler (1), Yellowthroat (1), Gray Catbird (4), Worm-eating Warbler (1) and Kentucky Warbler (2). 4 Migración diurna de rapaces y otras especies / Raptor migration and other diurnal species El conteo total de rapaces migratorias en 2012 fue el doble del total para el 2011, llegando a más de medio millón de individuos. Este excelente conteo pone a Sapzurro entre los cinco sitios mundiales con la mayor concentración de rapaces migratorias. De hecho, estimamos que por nuestro sitio de estudió pasó el 17% de los 2 millones de Cathartes aura que migran entre Norte y Sur América y el 10% de los 1.5 millones de Buteo platypterus. También se destaca el conteo del vencejo Chaetura pelagica que ha sido raramente registrado en números tan grandes. This excellent count puts Sapzurro among the top 5 sites in the World in terms of supporting concentrations of migrating raptors. Indeed, we recorded 17% of the 2 million Turkey Vultures that migrate between North and South America and 10% of the world population of Broad-winged Hawks. Also worth noting was the count of Chimney Swifts, a species rarely recorded in such high numbers. 5 Recomendaciones / Recommendations Continuar el monitoreo de las aves migratorias en el Darién a largo plazo / Continue the monitoring of migration in the Darién in the long term. Identificar los dormideros de las rapaces que migran a través de la región / Identify the roosting sites for raptors migrating through the region. Estudiar las aves migratorias en bosques de mayor elevación en la Serranía del Darién / Study the migrant bird community in montane forests in the Serranía del Darién. Buscar formas para mantener la cobertura de bosque actual / Identify mechanisms to preserves current forest cover in the region. Encaminar acciones para aumentar y fortalecer la capacidad para aviturismo en la región, especialmente para observar la migración de rapaces y golondrinas / Undertake actions to increase and strengthen the capacity for bird tourism in the region, especially with a focus on the raptor migration.
