1 January 2014 JANUARY STUDENTS OF THE MONTH 1ST GRADE ESTUDIANTES DEL MES DE ENERO DE PRIMER GRADO Francisco Perez Maham Baig Juan Herrera Jack Colon Alexander Chavez Lesly Rios Cameron Reddish Victor Herrera Jonas Carrion OUR NEXT PTA MEETING IS ON FEBRUARY 5 LA PROXIMA JUNTA DE PTA ES FEBRERO 5 At the end of every PTA meeting, the Students of the Month for each class are given their Student of the Month Certificate by our Principal Ms. Rachel Staroba. Each teacher chooses one student who during the month has shown to be an example of our core values, Community, Curiosity, and Courage. In this way, we have three students of the month for each class. The January Students of the Month for First Grade in Ms. Sibucao s Class were Lesly R, Victor H, and Alexander C. For Ms. Salas s Class the students of the month were Jack C, Juan H, and Maham B. In Mrs. Alburquerque s class the students of the month were Francisco P, Jonas C, and Cameron R. Al final de cada reunión de PTA, los estudiantes del mes de cada clase reciben su Certificado del Estudiante del Mes de nuestra directora Rachel Staroba. Cada maestra elige un estudiante que durante el mes ha demostrado ser un ejemplo de nuestros valores fundamentales, la Comunidad, la Curiosidad, y el Valor. 3 STUDENT REPORTER XIA VANN INTERVIEWS SATURDAY MUSIC CLASS STUDENTS Student journalist, Xia Vann, sat down with a few of our kindergartner piano students to get the inside scoop on what happens during Saturday s instrument lessons. Roberto Arteaga, Lyla Deeg, and Amy Calle shared their love of music and the truth about the importance of practicing. (Edited by Ms. Staroba) Xia: How do you feel when you play music? Amy: I feel a little bit nervous. Roberto: When I play, I feel happy. I feel just fine. Lyla: When I play the piano, I feel a little sad. Xia: Why do you feel sad? If you don t love the piano, you can play the violin. You can pluck the strings. It s fun. It s called pizzicato. Xia: So, talk to me about what you do with the piano. Amy: I put my hands on the keys and it makes some sounds. Roberto: The piano makes music when you push the keys it makes music Lyla: We put our fingers under the two black keys, the twins, and the three black keys. Xia: Do you love the piano? All: Yes Xia: Do you have fun with the piano? Roberto: I love the way the music sounds. Xia: Is it hard for you to play? Roberto: Some of the music is hard, but some of it is easy. Sometimes, I forget to practice, but most times I do it. If I don t practice, I won t be good at the piano. Lyla: The songs are easy, but you have to practice. Xia: Has the teacher been teaching you the music? Roberto: Yes. We had a show before. We practiced a lot. Xia: What would you say to other kids who want to take lessons? Amy: Yes. Ask your parents. The teacher can show you how to do it. Maybe they have never tried it before. Xia: I have a sticker for you all for doing a good job with the interview. Thanks Roberto, Lyla, and Amy. 4 FAMILY CHORUS PERFORMANCE JOIN FAMILY CHORUS EVERY TUESDAY 2:30PM SEA PARTE DEL CORO FAMILIAR CADA MARTES 2:30PM The students at East Elmhurst Community School have Family Chorus on Tuesdays after school from 2:30pm to 3:30pm. Students and their families get to sing together and learn about musical theory through song. All first graders go to chorus during the day and this class is an extension of what is taught during the day. Los estudiantes de East Elmhurst Community School tienen Coro en Familia los Martes después de la escuela de 2:30pm a 3:30pm. Los estudiantes y sus familias cantan juntos y aprenden sobre la teoría musical a través del canto. Todos niños de primeras grado a coro durante el día y esta clase es una extensión de lo que se enseña durante el día.

5 1ST GRADE CHORUS PERFORMANCE The First Grade students at East Elmhurst Community School performed during the Winter Festival. In the First grade the children have chorus during the day and this performance is a result of hard work and many rehearsals. We would like to thank all the First Grade students who participated in this performance as well as the families who came to support them. Los estudiantes de Primer Grado de East Elmhurst Community School cantaron durante el Festival de Invierno. En el primer grado, los niños tienen coro durante el día y esto es el resultado de trabajo duro y muchos ensayos. 6 MUSIC RECITAL Some of our students from the Saturday Music Classes were part of a Holiday Student Recital where they performed a selection of works for piano and harp. Congratulations to Amy C, Roberto A, David Q and Blake C on their wonderful musical performances. SATURDAY MUSIC CLASSES In the Saturday Music Classes the children are learning how to play instruments such as the piano, guitar, and harp. The semester for piano clases ends on January 31st. The semester for guitar ends on February 14th. En las clases de Musica de los Sabados los niños están aprendiendo como tocar instrumentos como el piano, guitarra, y arpa. El semestre para las clases de piano termina 31 de enero. El semestre para clases de guitarra termina 14 de Febrero.
