1 HISPANIC STUDIES SPA 210 (003) ADVANCED GRAMMAR AND COMPOSITION Fall 2004 (T/TH) Instructor: Class time: 9:30-10:45 AM Office: POT, ph.: 257- Room: CB 346 Office Hours: Required texts. (1) Avanzando: Gramática española y lectura 5 th Ed. (de la Vega and Salazar) (2) Cuaderno de ejercicios 5th Ed. (de la Vega and Salazar) (3) A good Spanish-English/English-Spanish dictionary Course description. SPA 210 is an advanced grammar course required for the major/minor in Hispanic Studies. Students are exposed to the more technical aspects of grammar, while practicing speaking and writing skills. The course will be conducted in Spanish. Students will be evaluated according to attendance and active participation in class activities, written examinations, short written compositions, and a final exam. Readings will be assigned frequently to present larger cultural contexts for specific grammatical issues. Students are expected to participate actively, complete readings and assignments fully and regularly, and to come to class prepared with questions concerning their out of class work. Course Objectives. (1) To enhance intermediate language skills (acquired in SPA ) through detailed focus on Spanish grammar (2) To improve students speaking ability through group work and conversational interaction (3) To broaden students cultural perspectives of Spain, Spanish America, and Hispanics living in the United States through readings and other class activities (4) To use writing and discussion in Spanish to explore the relationship of the course materials to students own lives and values with a view to understand the perspectives of others Grade breakdown. The following are the components of the final grade for this course: Attendance and participation (15%). This is an in-depth, and at times tedious, grammar course: class time is essential for the successful mastery of advanced grammatical concepts. While assigned exercises are designed to allow students to practice concepts learned in class, class time is meant to clarify doubts on the homework. This means that active participation and regular attendance are crucial to your final grade. Each student will be permitted two (2) excused absences during the semester (proper documentation must be presented according to UK regulations). In addition to lowering the students participation grade, each unexcused absence will result in a 2-point deduction from his/her final course grade. There will be no make ups given for exams missed due to an unexcused absence. In addition, written work will only be accepted during class on the date it is due. Homework and quizzes (15%). While homework from the text and the workbook will be assigned daily (see course schedule), homework assignments will only be collected periodically throughout the semester. Quizzes announced and unannounced will also be given over readings or grammatical concepts. Written exams (25%). Two (2) written exams will be administered in this course. The exams will reflect grammar exercises in the text and workbook, readings and class discussions. Written assignments (25%). Five (5) short writing assignments (1-1½ pages, typed) will be collected throughout the semester. The assignments will typically entail a response to a reading or a class discussion. Students will be given the opportunity to rewrite the first three (3) assignments. Final examination (20%). The comprehensive written final examination for this course is currently scheduled for Wednesday, 17 December, 8:00am. Students are encouraged to clear up any problems they encounter on the previous written examinations before the final, as the final will be similar in format to the other exams. Plagiarism (SRR 6.3.1). All academic work, written or otherwise, submitted by students to their instructors or other academic supervisors, is expected to be the result of their own thought, research or self-expression. When students submit work purporting to be their own, but which in any way borrows ideas, organization, wording or anything else from another source without appropriate acknowledgement of the fact, the students are guilty of plagiarism. 1
