Cabrera May he rest in peace The liturgy of this Sunday gives us a glimpse of what a Christian life looks like. To be a Christian does not consists in trying to be good and to fulfill a series of precepts. It means first of all to acknowledge God as Lord of one s life - to accept that someone else (God) knows better what is more important for you than you do. In order to do so, it is fundamental to renounce one s will. Many times we want to be in control of our life: constantly fighting against the events which do not match our plans. We all want to be the god of our life. Many times we are actually not able to see the blessings of the Lord in the struggles of our children, in the illness of a parent or in our loneliness. On the contrary, we always grumble and even curse at everything that which not pleases us completely; we tend to run away from our cross. Therefore, humility is necessary to let God develop his plan of Salvation for us. Our path to eternal life starts here on earth. This is why the Lord builds our road to Salvation as we go through life. Sometimes he needs to demolish our worldly bourgeois-middle class mentality in order to restore in us the image of a child of God. Therefore, as mentioned before, in order to put ourselves under God s blessing humility is necessary, people humble and lowly, who shall take refuge in the name of the LORD (Zephaniah). To take refuge in his name means to firmly believe that all things work for good for those who love God (Rom 8). Consequently, we are called to be poor in pride, to be simple, so that we may mourn for our soul, as we ask for the grace to become more and more aware of our sins. Then, as we see that we are no better than our neighbor, we stop judging the other, experiencing a desire for peace: meekness will be granted to us. At this stage, we understand that mercy is the only way to true justice, since this was the justice of the Lord on the Cross. Mercy is at the center of today's Gospel: all Beatitudes seem to flow from it. To live these Beatitudes, which is the picture of the life Christ wants us to live, humility is much needed. How do we know if we are following Christ and his humility? If we are willing to give our life for him in spite of whatever injustice we may receive: Blessed are you if they insult you and persecute you and utter every kind of evil against you falsely because of me. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven (Mt 5:12).

4 Page 4 IV Sunday of Ordinary Time January 29, 2017 IV Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario Las Bienaventuranzas fueron predicadas por Jesús desde la altura de la montaña, que baja hasta el lago de Tiberíades. La imagen invertida de la montaña reflejada en el lago terso nos enseña que todos los que quieren iniciarse en los misterios del espíritu deben aprender a invertir todas sus maneras de ver y de hacer, la dirección de sus deseos, el diseño de su vida. 1. La felicidad de la pobreza en el espíritu. Es apetecer la simplicidad, por encima de las satisfacciones del propio pensar y saber. Es disponibilidad de despojo y de renuncia, para no quedarse en lo inmediato y buscar lo trascendente. Ante el Reino de los cielos no hay ninguna riqueza comparable. 2La felicidad del sufrir. Es manifestación de aguante interior, de serenidad y mansedumbre. Dios es el que reivindica y defiende. Hay que saber sufrir los sufrimientos y las privaciones. El mundo necesita testigos de mansedumbre, de dulzura y de fortaleza en el sufrimiento. 3. La felicidad del llanto. Qué es llorar? Es el primer grito, la primera expresión del hombre. Llora el que es capaz de una nostalgia, el que siente una separación, el que anhela volver al ámbito cálido y profundo de lo original. La felicidad de las lágrimas lavan los ojos para ver el consuelo de la ternura de Dios. No son lágrimas de tristeza o melancolía, sino de fe. 4. La felicidad del hambre y de la sed. Desde la experiencia de las necesidades del cuerpo, hay que descubrir el hambre y la sed de justicia, que es el alimento del alma y significa la voluntad de Dios. Por lo tanto, la justicia es la salvación total. No hay que hambrear lo perecedero, que no sacia, ni beber lo que no tiene espíritu de transcendencia. 5. La felicidad de la misericordia. Significa caridad recíproca y activa, significa perdón. Esta bienaventuranza se opone al materialismo y positivismo farisaico, que despreciaba a los pobres, a los desgraciados y a los pecadores. Seremos medidos por Dios con la misma medida de misericordia que usemos con los demás. 6. La felicidad de la limpieza. bienaventurados lo que tienen limpio el corazón, como si fuese agua clara de montaña que permite ver el fondo en el que Dios se refleja. El que quiera ver a Dios que lave su corazón sucio para que pueda contemplar en lo profundo de su interior el valor de lo eterno. 7. La felicidad de la paz. Los pacíficos no son los tranquilos, sino los que hacen la paz, quienes la componen a partir del desorden, quienes la crean desde el caos. La paz es el sello de Dios, la plenitud en la unidad. 8. La felicidad de la persecución. El creyente sabe que la vida no es fácil, que la fidelidad al Evangelio exige muchas renuncias, que la incomprensión es el distintivo de los que siguen las enseñanzas del Maestro, pero sobre todo que el Reino de los cielos bien vale cualquier persecución.
