2 iograhical Note Adolo Meía Reseña iográica Having irst studied music at home with his guitar-laying ather, Adolo Meía continued his musical training in Cartagena, but also studied hilosohy and literature He briely attended the Instituto Musical de Cartagena, but let when he ound it unchallenging He began studying on his own, while working or the oular Carribeanstyle Lorduy Orchestra as ianist, conductor, and comoser ust married in 190, Meía nevertheless let alone to try his luck in New York, where his association with Argentinian musician Terig Tucci and his Orquesta Tíica Colombiana y Estudiantina urthered his knowledge o instrumental arranging He also set u his own orchestra, Los Calientes, and with Tucci and Antonio rancés ormed a trio that erormed music rom the Sanish court Meía returned to Cartagena in 19, but soon let again to work in ogotá as a librarian or the Orquesta Sinónica, which led to studies at the Conservatory, the orchestra s arent institution This comoser o andangos, cumbias, and rumbas soon develoed a lively interest in comosing symhonic and iano ieces His most well-known orchestral iece, the Pequeña suite o 198, won the Ezequiel ernal rize, which enabled him to study in Paris with Nadia oulanger Wartime conditions in 1940 orced Meía to return to Cartagena, where he reoined his wie, whom he had seen only on brie visits, and got to know his sons He directed the band o the Naval School, then began teaching at the Music Institute o Cartagena, where he served as deuty director, conducted the orchestra, and taught harmony, guitar, and cello until he retired He also heled organize the eleven estivals o the Pro-Arte Musical de Cartagena, which garnered worldwide attention Meía comosed much less ater 190, adding the study o hysics and languages to his many activities About the work Meía s rize-winning Pequeña suite received its irst erormance in 198 at the estival Iberoamericano de Música undación ogotá, organized by Gustavo Esina Grau to celebrate the 450th anniversary o the ounding o the city The Little Suite consists o three movements all based on traditional Colombian dances The irst movement is in the style o a bambuco, an Andean song and dance, tyically sung as a duet in thirds to guitar accomaniment and characterized with advance-and-retreat dance stes symbolizing courtshi Here the atmoshere heats u considerably in the inal section Also reresenting the Andes, the slow second movement draws on the torbellino, a moderately aced song and dance in strongly accented trile meter The oening eatures a lowing lute solo, which returns ater a livelier middle section In his third movement Meía boldly incororates oular music rom the Atlantic coast or the irst time in Colombian symhonic music, desite conlicting views about its value and its erceived threat to Andean culture The traditional cumbia is a urely instrumental dance, erormed by coules dancing with exaggerated hi movements in a circle around an ensemble o seated musicians usually by the light o candles held by each dancing woman Meía begins with layers o rhythmic atterns, which become accomaniment to a rominent lute melody The a regresar a Cartagena, donde se reencontró con su esosa, a quien había visto sólo durante breves visitas, y udo conocer meor a sus hios Dirigió la banda de la Escuela Naval y emezó a enseñar en el Instituto Musical de Cartagena, donde ue subdirector, dirigió la orquesta y dictó cursos de armonía, guitarra y violonchelo hasta retirarse También ayudó a organizar once estivales de Pro-Arte Musical
