Qué llevaron para su caminata? Read the title and talk about the cover illustration. Tell children that this book will give information about what to pack for a hike. Introduce the Text Guide children through the text, helping with unfamiliar words so they can read the text successfully. Here are some suggestions: Page 2: Explain that children will see a girl packing her backpack to go for a hike. Suggested language: Vayan a la página 2. Qué está haciendo la niña? It is important to pack the right things for a hike. Children can learn how to get ready by themselves. The pictures show some good things to take on a hike. Choices for Support Concepts of Print Help children practice letter/sound relationships by recognizing and using beginning consonant sounds and the letters that represent them to read and write words. Phonemic Awareness and Word Work Provide practice as needed with words and sounds, using one of the following activities: Listening Game Have children listen for words that begin with the same sound. Have children raise their hands if the words begin with the same sound and keep their hands in their laps if the beginning letter is different. Say pairs of words, emphasizing the beginning consonant sound, for example: mapa and manzana; mamá and papá; agua and acampar; todo and listo; caminar and caminata. Build Words Have children make more words that have the same initial vowel sound as acampar and agua (ama, ala, alta, acá, amor). Write the words in a list on the board or on a large sheet of paper. Read the list aloud together. 3 Lesson 19:

4 Writing About Reading Vocabulary Practice Read the directions and have children complete the Vocabulario questions on Hoja reproducible Responding Have children complete the vocabulary activities on page 7. Building Vocabulary Things for a Hike Build on the words for things to pack in. Suggested language: Pensemos en todas las cosas que empaca la niña para la caminata. Qué más creen que sería bueno empacar para una caminata? As children suggest items, write their words and sentences on the board or on a large strip of paper. Begin the list with the words: Empaco mi. (Possible suggestions: banana, naranja, pera, panecillo, jugo, impermeable, suéter, linterna) After children have made their suggestions, read the list aloud together, pointing to each word.
