RITA CATHOLIC CHURCH, DADE CITY, FLORIDA August 20, 2017 Faith Formation Formación de la fe Parents as Faith Formator John Paul II in His Apostolic exhortation on the Role of the Family categorically states that the parents are the primary educators of their children. This obligation arises from the fact that they have given life to their children and are called to give them a life that leads to full self-actualization as human beings. It is the duty of the parents to make sure that their children grow up animated by love of God and charity to others. It is incumbent upon parents to build their homes as communities of faith where Christ is welcomed, His words is lived and His love is shared. However, the success of the parents as educators and first catechists of their children lies on their level of education and formation. Insufficiently instructed and less informed parents can only give us much. Here the assistance of the Church is indispensable. The Church has the mission and the means to provide education to the parents. Parents are to bring to God their whole family by authentic prayer life, Christian living and witnessing. They have to endeavor to form their home into a praying community. Efforts must be done by parents to instill among their children the importance of the basic. Gone were the days when family members gather to pray the Angelus and the Holy Rosary every evening. Parents must encourage in their homes the devout praying of the grace before and after meals.it is important also to revive the family altars in every Catholic home which reminds the family members of the abiding presence of God. The sacraments of the Church are means of sanctification and parents must see to it that their family is never deprived of their richness especially the Holy Eucharist. It rests upon the parents to inculcate to their children the love for the Eucharist which must be at the center of a worshipping community. One way to educate the children on the values of the Eucharist is to have meaningful celebration of family meals in celebration of great family moments. However, it is not to be neglected that the parents share in the office of sanctifying by ensuring the authentic Christian education of their children. Again, family meals are great moments of sharing and imparting Christian values among children. Also, they must ensure that their children avail of the catechism classes and other religious activities being offered by their parishes. Lastly, the parents are called to holiness. By their holy life they provide good examples to their children and offer their family as a sacrifice, living, holy and pleasing to God. Geraldine M. 3 Page 3 August 20, 2017 FROM THE PRIESTS DESK Brothers and sisters, In the readings this Sunday both, Isaiah the prophet and Jesus make clear that salvation is for all peoples. How shocking Isaiah s prophecy must have been to the Jewish community who understood themselves to be God s chosen ones. The gospel shows that the disciples are still struggling with this same issue: to whom does God extends his salvation. The first reading proclaims that God s blessings and salvation are for all who observe what is right and do what is just; not just the Israelites. Whenever we open the Bible and begin to read it, we ought to understand the times and cultural context that shaped the composition of the particular text we are reading. For the Jewish nation, the Messiah was the One who would come to save them. Only then, all nations would receive salvation through God s mighty deeds for Israel. In the gospel today, although the Canaanite woman suffered the disdain of the disciples, she persisted. This Gentile woman possessed the habits of the heart that gave her the will to act. In her soul she was aware of her daughter s need for healing. She was audacious and courageous. Great was her faith in pursuing Jesus to bestow this healing. In our personal journey toward God we must act as the Canaanite woman, with trust, tenacity and perseverance. Endowed with a spiritual soul, with intellect and with free will, the human person is from his very conception ordered to God and destined for eternal beatitude. He pursues his perfection in seeking and loving what is true and good. (Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World, Gaudium et Spes, 15). Pax Domini vobiscum, Fr. Hermanas y hermanos, Del Escritorio Del Sacerdote En las lecturas de este domingo, tanto el profeta Isaías como Jesús, dejan claro que la salvación se ofrece a todos. La profecía de Isaías tuvo que sorprender a la comunidad hebrea de la época, pues ellos se consideraban el pueblo escogido. La narración evangélica muestra que los discípulos también debatían el tema de: a quién Dios ofrece la salvación. La primera lectura nos comunica que las bendiciones de Dios y la salvación se ofrecen a quienes cumplen los preceptos, observan el derecho y practican la justicia, o sea, no sólo a los israelitas. Siempre que leemos la Biblia debemos estar conscientes de la época y el contexto cultural en que se redactó el texto que escrutamos. Para la nación judía, el Mesías era quien vendría a salvarla. En ese orden, las demás naciones se salvarían a través de la bondad de Dios en favor de Israel. En el evangelio de hoy, la mujer cananea sufre el rechazo de los discípulos pero persevera. Poseía en su carácter los hábitos necesarios que la impulsaban a actuar con determinación. Conocía el grave estado de su hija y buscaba cómo sanarla, por eso fue tan intrépida y valiente. Con enorme fe consiguió obtener de Jesús la tan ansiada curación. En nuestro peregrinaje hacia Dios debemos actuar como la mujer cananea, plenos de confianza, tenacidad y perseverancia. Dotada de alma espiritual, de entendimiento y de voluntad, la persona humana está desde su concepción ordenada a Dios y destinada a la bienaventuranza eterna. Camina hacia su perfección en la búsqueda y el amor de la verdad y del bien, (Constitución Pastoral sobre la Iglesia en el Mundo Actual, Gaudium et Spes, 15). Pax Domini vobiscum, P. Thanks to their generosity, we were able to provide new shoes to 253 children.
