2 Saint Charles Parish San Diego / Imperial Beach Page Two From the Pastor Brothers and sisters: You have not approached that which could be touched and a blazing fire and gloomy darkness and storm and a trumpet blast and a voice speaking words such that those who heard begged that no message be further addressed to them. No, you have approached Mount Zion and the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and countless angels in festal gathering, and the assembly of the firstborn enrolled in heaven, and God the judge of all, and the spirits of the just made perfect, and Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and the sprinkled blood that speaks more eloquently than that of Abel. Letter to the Hebrews The passage above is our second reading for this Sunday s Mass. In it St. Paul compares the Israelites experience at Mt. Sinai to the experience we have spiritually each and every day at Mass. If you remember when Moses went up the mountain to receive the Ten Commandments the mountain was wreathed in smoke and fire. The Israelites too heard the voice of God that sounded like the crack of lightening and they were afraid to hear or even look upon the mountain so impressive was the sight. As awesome as that experience was in receiving the covenant with God we have something even greater here. At Mass we re-present, make present again, the very sacrifice of Jesus. Each time we celebrate the Eucharist we are there with Jesus during his life on earth, his passion, death, and resurrection. What s more, we are joined with him already glorified in Heaven. Through him, and with him, and in him we give to God the Father Almighty the greatest gift in the cosmos: Jesus Christ himself! Angels and saints look on in adoration of the Lord while we make this unsurpassable offering to God Most High. The Mass, therefore, is something that exceeds what eye can see or ear can hear. Heaven is brought down to earth and if we look with eyes of faith instead of flesh we will see this glorious and heavenly exchange take place. All that said we live in a very earthly time. The popular culture raises our bodies, our looks, above all else. We tend to focus only on that which we can touch, see, hear, and taste. We are so inundated and bombarded with earthly things it is sometimes very difficult to see the heavenly. Even at Mass we get distracted with other people, our cell phones, and a host of other things. We sometimes come completely unprepared to experience the beautiful and awesome thing we do as we worship God. Our minds and even our bodies are frequently unprepared for the sacrifice which takes place at every Mass. So here are a couple of tips to help you prepare for the greatest act of worship we can offer God. First, Mass preparation doesn t begin at the opening hymn. It begins days before the Mass starts. Read the readings for the Mass a couple of days before Sunday and allow the readings, the Word of God, to speak to you throughout the week. Second, fast from food and drink for an hour before Mass. We don t want to spoil our appetite for the divine. Third, dress appropriately and in accord with the dignity of the celebration taking place. Fourth, come early so that you can take time inside the church to prepare yourselves mentally, physically, and spiritually for Mass through prayer. Finally, ask God for the grace to see what is really happening at Mass spiritually speaking. In Mother Teresa s chapel there was always a note in the sacristy for the priest to read while he was preparing for Mass with the sisters. It read, Father, please pray this Mass as if it were your first or your last. That s great advice for both you and me.

5 Page Five Vigésimo Segundo Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario 28 de Agosto de 2016 Del Pastor Hermanos y hermanas: Cuando ustedes se acercaron a Dios, no encontraron nada material, como en el Sinaí: ni fuego ardiente, ni oscuridad, ni tinieblas, ni huracán, ni estruendo de trompetas ni palabras pronunciadas por aquella voz que los Israelitas no querían volver a oír nunca. Ustedes, en cambio, se han acercado a Sión el monte y la ciudad del Dios viviente, a la Jerusalén celestial, a la reunión festiva de miles y miles de ángeles, a la asamblea de los primogénitos, cuyos nombres están escritos en el cielo. Se han acercado a Dios, que es el Juez de todos los hombres, y a los espíritus de los justos que alcanzaron la perfección. Se han acercado a Jesús, el mediador de la nueva alianza, y la sangre de la aspersión que habla más elocuentemente que la de Abel. - Carta a los Hebreos El pasaje de arriba es de nuestra segunda lectura de la misa de este domingo en que San Pablo compara la experiencia de los Israelitas en el Monte Sinaí a la experiencia que tenemos espiritualmente cada día en la Misa. Si recuerdan cuando Moisés subió a la montaña para recibir los Diez Mandamientos la montaña fue envuelta por humo y fuego. Los Israelitas también escucharon la voz de Dios que sonaba como el estallido de relámpagos y tenían miedo de escuchar o incluso mirar a la montaña de tan impresionante que fue la vista. Tan impresionante como fue esa experiencia al recibir el pacto con Dios tenemos algo aún más grande aquí. En la Misa re-presentamos, hacer presente de nuevo, el mismo sacrificio de Jesús. Cada vez que celebramos la Eucaristía estamos allí con Jesús durante su vida en la tierra, su pasión, muerte y resurrección. Lo que es más, estamos unidos a él ya glorificado en el cielo. A través de él, con él y en él damos a Dios Padre omnipotente el don más grande en el cosmos: el propio Jesucristo! Los Ángeles y los Santos observan en adoración al Señor mientras realizamos este inigualable ofrenda a Dios el Altísimo. La Misa, por lo tanto, es algo que excede lo que los ojos pueden ver o el oído puede escuchar. El cielo es traído a la tierra, y si miramos con ojos de fe en lugar de carne veremos este glorioso y celestial intercambio teniendo lugar. Dicho todo esto, vivimos en una época muy terrenal. La cultura popular eleva nuestros cuerpos, nuestras miradas, por encima de todo lo demás. Tendemos a centrarnos sólo en lo que podemos tocar, ver, oír, y probar. Estamos tan inundados y bombardearon con cosas terrenales, a veces es muy difícil ver lo celestial. Incluso en la Misa nos distraemos con otras personas, nuestros teléfonos celulares, y un montón de otras cosas. A veces venimos completamente mal preparados para experimentar la belleza y la maravilla que hacemos cuando adoramos a Dios. Incluso nuestras mentes y nuestros cuerpos están frecuentemente mal preparados para el sacrificio que tiene lugar en cada Misa. Así que aquí están algunos consejos para ayudarle a prepararse para el mayor acto de adoración que podemos ofrecer a Dios. En primer lugar, la preparación para la Misa no comienza con el himno de apertura. Comienza días antes de la Misa. Lean las lecturas de la Misa un par de días antes del Domingo y permita que las lecturas de la Palabra de Dios, le hablen a lo largo de la semana. Segundo, ayune de comida y bebida durante una hora antes de la Misa. No queremos arruinar nuestro apetito de lo divino. En la capilla de la Madre Teresa siempre hubo una nota en la sacristía para el sacerdote para leer mientras se preparaba para la Misa con las hermanas. Decía, "Padre, por favor ore esta misa como si fuese su primera o su última." Eso es genial asesoramiento tanto para usted como para mí.
