by Carl Desmond Build Background Read the title to children and talk about the cover illustration. Ask them what they think this book will be about. Encourage children to use their knowledge of the Jorge el Curioso series to talk about this book. Ask questions such as the following: Qué cuentos de animales les gustan más? Alguna vez pensaron en escribir o ilustrar su propio libro? Sobre qué escribirían? Introduce the Text Guide children through the text, noting important ideas, and helping with unfamiliar language and vocabulary so they can read the text successfully. Here are some suggestions: Page 2: Explain that this book tells about Margarita and Hans Rey, the authors and illustrators of many books about a funny monkey named Jorge Suggested language: Vayan a la página 2. Este es Jorge. Es un mono muy divertido. Qué está haciendo en este dibujo? Qué aventuras tendrá si monta esta bicicleta al revés? Page 3: Point to the photo on page 3. Learn More Words aventuras curioso 2

Read As the children read, observe them carefully. Guide them as needed, using language that supports their problem solving ability. Respond to the Text Personal Response Invite children to share their personal responses to the story. Begin by asking what they liked best about the book, or what they found most interesting. Suggested language: Cuáles de las aventuras de Jorge el Curioso que aparecen en el libro les gustó más? Les dirían a sus amigos que lean este libro? Por qué sí? Por qué no? Ways of Thinking As you discuss the text, help children understand these teaching points: Thinking Within the Text Thinking Beyond the Text Thinking About the Text Margarita and Hans Rey wrote stories about a curious monkey. Jorge had many funny adventures. It s fun to write stories for children. Authors get the ideas for their books in many ways. The photograph shows what Hans and Margarita look like. Some of the sentences begin the same way. The funny illustrations show Jorge s humorous adventures. 2006. Fountas, I.C. & Pinnell, G.S. Teaching for Comprehending and Fluency, Heinemann, Portsmouth, N.H. Choices for Support Fluency As children read aloud, be sure that they demonstrate awareness of the function of the full range of punctuation. Phonics and Word Work Provide practice as needed with words and sounds, using one of the following activities: Build Sentences Materials: index cards. Write high frequency words from the book on index cards: (es, muchas, un, el, escribir, libros, siempre). Then write the story words on index cards: (mono, curioso, Jorge, Margarita, Hans, zoológico, burbujas). Have pairs of children build sentences using the word cards. Encourage them to read their sentences to the group. Then, have children illustrate their sentences. Clapping Syllables Have children hear and say syllables they hear in words from the book (mono, curioso, aventuras, dibujar, cuentos, juntos, espacio). Have them clap on each syllable: mo-no, cu-rio-so, a-ven-tu-ras, di-bu-jar, cuen-tos, jun-tos, es-pa-cio. 3

Writing About Reading Critical Thinking Read the directions for children on Hoja reproducible 9.7 and guide them in answering the questions. Responding Read aloud the questions at the back of the book and help children complete the activities. Target Comprehension on Skill Text and Graphic Features Tell children that words and pictures work together in a book to help readers better understand the story. Model how to think about the way that words and pictures work together. Think Aloud Mientras leo sobre las aventuras de Jorge, veo dibujos que me muestran qué está haciendo. En la página 9, leo sobre el desorden que hizo con las burbujas. El divertido dibujo de esa página me mostró cómo era la aventura de Jorge. El dibujo me ayudó a entender mejor lo que decían las palabras. Practice the Skill Have children share examples of pictures in other books that show what the words are describing. Writing Prompt Read aloud the following prompt: Have children write their response, using the writing prompt on page 6. The Jorge el Curioso books are very popular with children all over the world. Write about why you think children love to read about Jorge. 4
