Psalm 130: 1-2 Fifth Sunday of Lent In the Christian experience we encounter Christ, sometimes in a blinding flash like Paul on his way to Damascus. Paul, the persecutor of the disciples of Jesus, is transformed after his encounter with the Risen One and his desire to know Christ better and live fully with him. Having found Christ, Paul makes the decision to forget the past and go forward. It is remarkable in the reading of the Gospel this Sunday, as in the whole Gospel, to notice that Jesus does not concentrate on the pasts of people. Only the present and the future matter for him. For example, to the woman who is caught in an act of adultery, he says, Go, and from now on do not sin anymore. The first reading develops the same way. The Lord tells his people returning from exile at Babylon, Remember not the events of the past. See, I am doing something new! Let us belong to the lineage of witnesses willing to know Christ and to go forward with him. Yo voy a realizar algo nuevo! They said to him, Teacher, this woman was caught in the very act of adultery. Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what do you say? Jesus bent down and began to write on the ground with his finger. But when they continued asking him, he straightened up and said to them, Let the one among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her. And in response, they went away one by one. So he was left alone with the woman. He said to her, Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you? She replied, No one, sir. Then Jesus said, Neither do I condemn you. Go, and from now on do not sin any more.

BABE RUTH WAS MARRIED HERE We have just discovered a large supply of the parish history published several years ago. Although much has happened since that time, the history of St. Gregory s remains one of great interest. Did you know, for instance, that the church originally held services in a stable on West 89 th Street... or that classes in the school began in 1913... or that Babe Ruth was married at St. Gregory s on April 17, 1929... or that Cardinal O Connor visited to bless the church on the occasion of its 75 th anniversary? These and many other facts about our heritage are included in the trilingual parish history available now for you to take home and read. Copies are at the back of the church. In commenting on the history, Cardinal Francis O Connor said he was particularly happy to note that the story is told in three languages. IF THEY COULD SPEAK ON MARCH 26th A repeat performance of If They Could Speak: Ten Witnesses to the Passion of Jesus will be presented on Tuesday, March 26 th, at 7 P. M. The performance was scheduled too late to be included in the Holy Week Events, but flyers are available at the back of the church. It consists of short dramatic monologues read by St. Gregory s parishioners.
