EUCHARISTIC ADORATION On the First Friday of each month we gather in prayer and praise before the Blessed Sacrament. Following the 8 a.m. Mass and concluding at 8 p.m. SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM Parents of infants requesting information about Baptism may contact Father Ken in the parish office. Infant baptisms are celebrated on the second Saturday of the month. CELEBRATION OF CHRISTIAN FUNERALS At the time of death, a family member should contact the parish office, as soon as possible, to arrange the date and time for the Funeral Liturgy. SACRAMENT OF MATRIMONY Couples must begin preparation for their Sacrament at least six months prior to their proposed wedding date. Please call the parish office for more information. Paul Parekkattil, V.C., a Vincentian Missionary Priest from India, will be in our parish on Aug. 4 and 5, weekend to participate in our Annual Missionary Cooperation Plan. He will share his missionary experience at all the Masses next weekend (Aug. 3 and 4) and will make an appeal on behalf of the Vincentian Missions. The Vincentian Congregation (V.C.), a Religious Congregation, was founded in Kerala, India in 1904, modeled after the Congregation of the Mission founded by St. Vincent de Paul. Members of this flourishing Religious Congregation are engaged in Mission Work in all parts of India and in East Africa and in Peru. Please visit their web site, to learn more about them. The Vincentian Missionaries need our help to carry out their many missionary, educational and charitable activities. They need our special financial support for the training of young men studying for priesthood. There will be second collection next weekend (Aug.4 and 5) to help the Missionary work of the Vincentian Fathers. We have been listening to Saint Mark s Gospel during this liturgical year (Year B). Today we begin to hear a long section from John s Gospel, starting with the miracle of the multiplication of the loaves and fishes. This miracle story is a prelude to the Lord s statements that we will begin hearing in a few weeks, in which Jesus refers to himself as the bread of life. Each week we witness a miracle at Mass. We do not see a multiplication of loaves before us. What our eyes of faith allow us to see is the miracle of the transformation of common elements bread and wine into the Lord s Body and Blood. Once we have received the Lord, the multiplication begins, for in the Eucharist we are strengthened to multiply our efforts to feed the poor, shelter the homeless, and bring comfort to the despairing. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION REGISTRATION FOR OUR FALL CLASSES Early registration for our Religious Education Program in the fall begins July 1 st. Those students who attended last year will receive a registration packet in the mail. Those who register before August 31 st will pay an early bird registration fee. New families who want to register their children can come to the parish office Monday Thursday from 9:00 a.m. 5:00 p.m. and Friday from 8:30-2:30. You can also go online to our parish website and print out the registration forms. You must have a copy of your child s Baptism certificate to register them in our classes. Our Elementary Religious Education classes are on Tuesday evenings from 6:30-7:30 p.m. for grades 1 st through 8 th and are held at St. Catherine s School. Our Confirmation preparation classes are twice a month on Sundays from 4:00 5:15 p.m. and are held at St. Catherine s Church meeting rooms. Preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation begins in the 9 th grade. You will need a copy of their Baptism and First Communion certificates. 7 Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 29, 2018 Page 7 Parish Event Mark your calendar now Icon Writing Workshop January 21-26, 2019 In January, you will have the unique Opportunity to participate in a 6-day icon Writing workshop with master iconographer, Dmitri Andreyev, here at St. Catherine of Siena Parish. The 6-day intensive workshop involves the study of the Byzantine-Russian tradition of icon-writing. This multilayered process will be presented along with the theological meaning of each step and the rich symbolic associations of the natural materials used. We will be writing the icon of St. Michael the Archangel shown above. Dmitri is from the Prosopon School of Iconography, founded by his father Vladislav Andreyev. He has preserved the ancient Russian-Byzantine tradition of iconography using only natural materials, including ground pigments and egg tempura. 9 Decimoséptimo Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario 29 de julio de 2018 Page 9 Lecturas y Noticias MILAGRO SEMANAL Esta semana señala el comienzo de una especie de desvío litúrgico. Hemos estado escuchando el Evangelio según san Marcos durante este año litúrgico (Ciclo B). Hoy comenzamos a escuchar una larga sección del Evangelio según san Juan que empieza con el milagro de la multiplicación de los panes y peces. Este milagro es un preludio de las declaraciones del Señor, que comenzaremos a escuchar en algunas semanas, en las que Jesús se llama a sí mismo el Pan de Vida. Cada semana somos testigos de un milagro en la Misa. No vemos la multiplicación de panes. Lo que vemos con los ojos de la fe es el milagro de la transformación de elementos comunes, pan y vino, en el Cuerpo y la Sangre del Señor. Una vez que hemos recibido al Señor, comienza la multiplicación, porque en la Eucaristía se nos fortalece para multiplicar nuestros esfuerzos por alimentar a los pobres, darles refugio a los que no tienen hogar y brindarles consuelo a los afligidos. Si usted tiene algunas preguntas por favor llame a nuestro Director de Educación Religiosa, Gina Stewart en ext TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE El día 2 de agosto es la fiesta de Santa María de los Ángeles, patrona de Costa Rica y de los franciscanos. En 1635 la mestiza Juana Pereira descubrió una pequeña imagen de María con el Niño Dios. Varias veces la imagen se le perdió y regresaba al sitio donde la había encontrado el día 2 de agosto. Por esta razón el lugar a donde regresaba se convirtió en su santuario y se le dio el título de Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles en honor de la capilla dedicada a Santa María de los Ángeles afuera del pueblito de Asís en Italia. Esta capillita reconocida como la Porciúncula (pedacito de tierra) fue restaurada por san Francisco. Allí nació la familia franciscana y Francisco insistió que los frailes nunca abandonaran ese lugar porque era consagrado a Dios. Allí María y los ángeles alababan a Dios cuando los seres humanos habían dejado de hacerlo. Según parece, la imagen costarricense también insistió en quedarse en un pedacito de tierra consagrado a Dios donde sus hijos e hijas pueden recurrir a ella y adorar al Dios eterno.
