Se hacen algunas de estas pruebas a todas las mujeres. Si tiene preguntas o preocupaciones sobre las pruebas o los resultados obtenidos en ellas, asegúrese de hablar con su doctor, enfermera, partera u otros miembros del personal de la clínica. Si el resultado de una prueba es anormal, llamaremos inmediatamente. Si es normal, la revisaremos en su próxima visita. Información Comentarios Verifica si el conteo de glóbulos rojos de la sangre es bajo (anemia). Hepatitis B* Infección del hígado; puede pasársela al bebé si la infección está activa. Puede necesitar suplementos de hierro. Recomendamos que todos los bebés reciban la primera de tres vacunas el día de alta médica. Virus herpes simple* (tipo oral y genital) VIH* (Virus de inmunodeficiencia humana) Frotis de Papanicolau Rubéola (sarampión alemán) Frotis del cuello uterino Hay cierto riesgo de pasárselo al bebé, sobre todo cuando se trata de la primera infección; la mujer puede necesitar tratamiento. Información Comentarios Cantidad pequeña de líquido amniótico Busca defectos genéticos y algunos defectos del cerebro y la medula espinal. Con la ayuda de ultrasonido. Se realiza con el consentimiento de la paciente a las 16 a 18 semanas. Los resultados se le entregan a la paciente 14 a 21 días después de la prueba. Se ofrece a las mujeres mayores de 35 años de edad con evaluaciones positivas de suero materno o aquellas con antecedentes de problemas genéticos. Muestreo de vellosidad coriónica (CVS) Pequeñas cantidades de células de la placenta Busca defectos genéticos. Con la ayuda de ultrasonido. Se lleva a cabo con consentimiento de la paciente a las 10 a 12 semanas. Resultados al cabo de 14 a 21 días. Se ofrece a las mujeres mayores de 35 años de edad o a aquellas con antecedentes de problemas genéticos. Prueba de detección del suero materno (prueba cuádruple) Detecta posibles defectos del cerebro o la medula espinal y algunas anormalidades cromosómicas. Se realiza con consentimiento de la paciente a las 15 a 20 semanas. Si el resultado es positivo, puede someterse a ultrasonidos y amniocéntesis. Examen de sangre integrado Al igual que la prueba cuádruple, pero se la hace dos veces con translucencia nucal. Podría mejorar la detección de problemas.

Información Comentarios Detección y conteo de los movimientos del bebé Estos movimientos son un modo de evaluar la salud del bebé. Se comienza a contar a las 26 semanas de su embarazo. Su bebé deberá moverse por lo menos 10 o más veces diariamente en un periodo de 2 horas. Glucola Prueba sin estrés (NST) (después de tomar una bebida azucarada especial) Se usa un monitor electrónico fetal externo Prueba de detección para la diabetes en el embarazo (diabetes gestacional). Frecuencia cardiaca del bebé registrada durante 20 a 30 minutos para verificar los cambios en respuesta a los movimientos del bebé. Se realiza en las semanas 26 y 28. Si el resultado es elevado, tendrá una prueba de tolerancia de 3 horas. Puede necesitar una dieta especial o insulina. Se efectúa con frecuencia para evaluar el bienestar de su bebé. Autoexamen de los senos Se examina los tejidos de los senos para ver si tiene cambios o abultamientos Puede detectar abultamientos o ver cambios que pueden ser cancerosos o precancerosos y requerir más pruebas. All women have some of these tests. Be sure to talk to your doctor, nurse, midwife, or other clinic staff if you have questions or concerns about the tests or your test results. If a test result is abnormal, we will call right away. If it is normal, we will review it at your next visit. See Pregnancy, Childbirth and the Newborn, pages 63 to 73 and pages 78 to 86. Urinalysis Urine Check for bladder infection or kidney disease without symptoms, which may be associated with preterm birth or kidney infection, if not treated. *sexually transmitted May need iron supplements. We recommend that all babies receive the first of 3 vaccinations on day of discharge. 1 in 3 women have genital herpes; test can show past exposure, even when there are no symptoms. Mother can be treated to help prevent passing infection to the baby. Follow-up exams and/or treatment after pregnancy. Get tested every year. If rubella negative, mother is given vaccine after the birth. If immune, there is no risk to the baby. Treated with antibiotics. Not always needed. Most accurate results when done after 18 weeks. Treated with antibiotics.

Screening test for diabetes in pregnancy (gestational diabetes). Baby s heart rate recorded for 20 to 30 minutes to check changes in response to baby s movement. Begin counting at 26 weeks of your pregnancy. Your baby should move at least 10 or more times in a 2-hour period daily. Done weeks 26 to 28. If elevated, will have 3-hour tolerance test. May need special diet or insulin. Often done to assess your baby s well-being. After-Pregnancy Tests Test Pap smear 2-hour glucose tolerance test Breast self-exam What s Tested Information Comments Swab from cervix (after drinking special sugary drink) You check your breast tissue for lumps or changes Screens for precancerous or cancerous conditions. Screens for diabetes, if had gestational diabetes in pregnancy. You may feel lumps or see changes that could be pre-cancerous or cancerous and may need further testing. Done at 6-week postpartum check-up, then annually. Done at 6-week visit. Do self-exam every month after your period, or on the last date of the month if not menstruating; report any lumps to your care provider.
