1 Educación del paciente Sección 21 Página 1 Para tener su bebé en UWMC Este folleto responderá a muchas de sus preguntas sobré cuándo llamar y acudir al hospital y qué esperar durante su permanencia en UWMC. Será un placer cuidarles a usted y su bebé. Cuando comiencen sus labores de parto Llame a Labores de Parto y Partos en el Centro de Maternidad e Infantes ( ) antes de acudir al UWMC. En general, le pediremos que venga al hospital cuando: Sus contracciones sean cada cinco minutos, durante una hora, si es su primer bebé, o cuando sean cada siete a diez minutos, si ya tuvo otro bebé antes Se rompa su bolsa de aguas AUNQUE NO TENGA CONTRACCIONES Asegúrese de llamar inmediatamente si Tiene hemorragia de su vagina. No siente que su bebé se mueve tanto como de costumbre. Tiene fiebre. Usted tiene menos de 37 semanas de embarazo y cree que es posible que esté teniendo labores de parto prematuras (calambres o una sensación de opresión seis o más veces por hora). 2 Sección 21 Página 2 Una vez que llegue a UWMC Si llega en automóvil, tiene unas cuantas opciones de estacionamiento. Si llega durante el día, le recomendamos que utilice el Garaje Triangle al otro lado de la calle, frente al hospital. Hay un asistente de servicio que estacionará su vehículo para usted. También podrá elegir el estacionamiento con servicio de asistentes frente a la entrada principal. Después de las 5:00 p.m., podrá estacionarse también en el Garaje Triangle o, si es urgente, podrá estacionar frente al hospital o el lote de la Sala de Emergencias. Cierre su automóvil con llave. Podrá cambiar de lugar su vehículo más tarde o un agente de seguridad lo estacionará por usted. Si tiene cupones médicos y no tiene quien le lleve a UWMC cuando se inicien las labores de parto, indíqueselo a su clínica. Le ayudarán aconsejándole que use un transportista de DSHS o que llame al 911. El Cuando llegue, un doctor o una partera le examinará para ver si se han iniciado las labores de parto reales (puede ser que no le vea su proveedor habitual). Si las labores se han iniciado, se le admitirá a la sala de Labores de Parto y Partos. Su pareja de labores de parto podrá permanecer a su lado durante su permanencia. Podrá recibir una línea intravenosa (IV) en el brazo para asegurarse de que no se deshidrate, además de un monitor fetal en el abdomen, para que podamos ver cómo se encuentra su bebé. Una enfermera registrada observará su estado de cerca.

Durante este tiempo, su enfermera la observará con frecuencia. Podrá disfrutar cierta cantidad de tiempo especial teniendo en brazos a su bebé después del nacimiento (a menos que haya complicaciones o que el bebé necesite cuidados especiales). Si piensa alimentar a su bebé al pecho, le ayudaremos a que comience a hacerlo inmediatamente después del parto. Los bebés suelen estar frecuentemente despiertos y alertas en estos instantes. Su enfermera le ayudará a aprender a cuidar y alimentar a su bebé. Having your baby at UWMC This handout will answer many of your questions about when to call and come to the hospital, and what to expect during your stay at UWMC. We look forward to taking care of you and your baby. When Your Labor Begins Call Labor and Delivery at the ( ) before you come to UWMC. In general, we will ask you to come to the hospital when: Your contractions are five minutes apart for one hour if this is your first baby, or when they are seven to 10 minutes apart if you have had a baby before Your water breaks EVEN IF YOU ARE NOT HAVING CONTRACTIONS Be Sure to Call Right Away If You have bleeding from your vagina. You don t feel your baby moving as much as usual. You have a fever. You are less than 37 weeks pregnant and think you may be having premature labor (cramping or feeling of tightening six or more times an hour). Please refer to Warning Signs During Pregnancy, section 7 in this notebook. You have any other warning signs during pregnancy; see Pregnancy, Childbirth and the Newborn, page 57 Once You Arrive at UWMC If you come by car, you have a few choices for parking. If you come during the day, we recommend you use the Triangle Garage across from the street from the hospital. There is a valet attendant who will park your car for you. You may also choose to use valet parking in front of the main entrance. After 5:00 p.m., you may also park in the Triangle Garage or, if urgent, you can park out in front of the hospital or in the Emergency Room lot. Lock your car.

6 Section 21 Page 2 It s Time! You can move your car later, or a security officer will park it for you. If you have medical coupons and will not have a ride to UWMC when you go into labor, let your clinic know. They will help to advise you to use a DSHS broker or call 911. The When you arrive, a doctor or midwife will examine you to see if true labor has started (you may not be seen by your usual provider). If labor has started, you will be admitted to a labor and delivery room. If labor has not actively started, either we will send you home and tell you what to watch for, or we may send you out to walk to help labor to progress. If you have not already called your provider, he or she will be contacted when you arrive in Labor and Delivery. Your labor partner is welcome to stay with you during your stay. You may have an IV in your arm to make sure you don t get dehydrated, and a fetal monitor on your abdomen so we can see how your baby is doing. A registered nurse will follow your status closely. ALWAYS ask questions if you don t understand what is going on. We are happy to answer your questions. After Your Baby Is Born Your recovery period. During this time, your nurse will check you often. You will be able to spend some special time holding your baby after the birth (unless there are complications or the baby needs special care). If you are planning to breastfeed, we will help you to get started right after birth. Babies are often awake and alert then. Your nurse will be happy to help you. Your postpartum stay. When you have recovered from the birth, you and your baby will move to a private room on our postpartum unit. Your baby will stay in your room with you while you are in the hospital (usually one day after an uncomplicated vaginal birth and three days after a Cesarean delivery). Your nurse will help you to learn how to care and feed your baby.

7 Section 21 Page 3 It s Time! Questions? Your questions are important. Call your doctor or healthcare provider if you have questions or concerns. UWMC Clinic staff are also available to help at any time. Labor and Delivery Postpartum Maternity and Infant Care Clinic Medical Records: Patient Data Services Medical Records: Automated Information Line Our visiting hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Your other children are welcome to visit you and the baby, unless they are ill. Your partner, friend or family member is welcome to stay with you and your baby. A daybed is provided for their comfort. Leaving UWMC Reminder: Discharge time is 11:00 a.m. Please make arrangements before coming to the hospital for your transportation home by 11:00 a.m. on your day of discharge. If you need to arrange a ride through the DSHS transportation broker, let your nurse know. (Please refer to Planning for Your Hospital Stay, section 19 in your notebook, for more information about discharge.) Early Days at Home Please call your clinic or care provider if you have any questions about yourself, feeding your baby (breast or bottle), or caring for your baby. You may receive a phone call at home from one of our registered nurses. She will call to see how you and your baby are doing and answer any questions you may have. If an appointment has not already been scheduled by the time you leave the hospital, you will need to schedule clinic visits for you and your baby. If you had a vaginal birth, you need to see your healthcare provider six weeks after you deliver. If your provider is a nurse midwife, this visit should take place one to two weeks after you deliver. If you had a Cesarean birth, you need to see your care provider for a visit at two weeks and six weeks. Your baby needs to be examined by a healthcare provider two weeks after birth. THESE CLINIC VISITS ARE VERY IMPORTANT! If you resume sexual relations before your check-up, be sure to use a reliable method of birth control. If you have questions, talk to your care provider.
