1 UW MEDICINE PATIENT EDUCATION ELECTRO-OCULOGRAM (EOG) SPANISH Electrooculografía (EOG) Lo que usted tiene que saber La electrooculografía es un examen que estudia la carga eléctrica a través de los ojos y cómo cambia en la oscuridad y en la luz. La EOG la realiza un técnico y después un médico analiza los resultados. Qué es la EOG? La EOG es un examen que estudia cómo funcionan las partes de la retina (la capa nerviosa en la parte posterior del ojo) y cómo cambian en la oscuridad y en la luz. Cómo debería prepararme? Haga planes para que alguien le lleve a casa después del examen. Usted no pude conducir. El examen EOG estudia la capa nerviosa en la parte posterior del ojo, denominada retina. No use maquillaje para los ojos. El maquillaje para los ojos puede causar una infección o lesión en los ojos. Puede comer y tomar sus medicamentos habituales antes y después del examen. Cómo funciona el examen? Se examinará su agudeza visual (cuán bien ve). El técnico le pondrá gotas en los ojos para dilatar las pupilas. Esto hace que las pupilas se agranden. Luego usted esperará a que se dilaten sus pupilas. Esto puede tomar hasta 45 minutos. Luego de que se dilaten sus pupilas, el técnico frotará un gel en la piel, en ciertos puntos cerca a los ojos y luego fijará pequeños discos metálicos (electrodos). 2 Usted acomodará su mentón frente a una máquina abierta, semejante a una esfera. Moverá los ojos de un lado al otro, observando 2 luces pequeñas a medida que se mueven en la máquina. Esta prueba se hará durante 15 minutos en la oscuridad y 15 minutos en la luz. La EOG normalmente toma aproximadamente 2 horas. Esto incluye el tiempo que toma dilatar las pupilas. Si usted va a someterse a un examen de electrorretinografía (ERG) el mismo día que la EOG, planifique estar en el hospital aproximadamente 4 horas. Después del examen Su(s) pupila(s) podría(n) permanecer dilatada(s) por hasta 2 días. Es posible que su vista esté borrosa durante este tiempo. No use lentes de contacto durante 24 horas. Después del examen, no conduzca automóviles, ni utilice máquinas, ni haga ninguna otra cosa que pudiera ser peligrosa si usted no ve bien. Cómo obtengo los resultados de mi examen? Un neurofisiólogo (médico que se especializa en afecciones del sistema nervioso) enviará los resultados de su examen a su médico que le refirió a nosotros. Su propio médico hablará con usted acerca de sus resultados. Dónde se hará el examen? El examen se hará en EEG/Laboratorio de Potenciales Evocados, en el segundo piso del centro médico. 4 UW MEDICINE PATIENT EDUCATION Electro-oculogram (EOG) What you need to know An electro-oculogram is a test that studies the electrical charge across your eye and how it changes in darkness and in light. EOGs are done by a technologist, and the findings are looked at later by a doctor. What is an EOG? An EOG is a test that looks at how parts of your retina (the nerve layer in the back of your eye) work and how it changes in darkness and in light. Retina How should I prepare? Make plans for someone to drive you home after the test. You cannot drive yourself. Do not wear eye makeup. Eye makeup can cause an infection or injury to your eye. You may eat and take your regular medicines before and after the test. How does the test work? An EOG test looks at the nerve layer in the back of your eye, called the retina. Your visual acuity (how well you see) will be tested. The technologist will place drops in your eyes to dilate your pupils. This makes your pupils larger. You will then wait for your pupils to dilate. This can take up to 45 minutes. After your pupils are dilated, the technologist will rub a gel onto your skin at certain spots near your eyes and then attach small metal discs (electrodes). 5 You will rest your chin in front of an open, globe-like, machine. You will move your eyes side to side, watching 2 small lights as they move in the machine. This test will be done for 15 minutes in the dark, then 15 minutes in the light. The EOG usually takes about 2 hours. This includes the time it takes for your pupils to dilate. If you are having an ERG test on the same day as your EOG, plan to be at the hospital for about 4 hours. After the Test Your pupil(s) may stay dilated for up to 2 days. Your vision may be blurry during this time. Do not wear contact lenses for 24 hours. After the test, do not drive a car, use machines, or do anything else that would be dangerous if you do not see well. How do I get my test results? A neurophysiologist (a doctor who specializes in conditions of the nervous system) will send your test results to your doctor who referred you to us. Your own doctor will talk with you about your results. Where will the test be done? Your test will be done in the EEG/Evoked Potential Lab, on the 2nd floor of the medical center. Take the Pacific Tower elevator to the 2nd floor (see map on the next page). Please arrive 5 to 10 minutes before your appointment time and check in at our reception desk in Room NN283.
