5 April 14, 2019 Palm Sunday of the Lord s Passion IS 50:4-7; PS 22:8-9, 17-20, 23-34; PHIL 2:6-11; LK 22:14-23:56 or LK 23:1-49 Two very different responses to our Lord s passion are highlighted during the Gospel reading from Luke today: the response of Simon of Cyrene and the response of Jesus acquaintances. Of Simon we are told, They took hold of a certain Simon, a Cyrenian, who was coming in from the country; and after laying the cross on him, they made him carry it behind Jesus. Whether Simon entered willingly and compassionately into this service or whether he took up the Cross of Christ with a grudge, we don t know. What we do know is this: Simon did his part faithfully. He stayed near to Christ, carrying the Cross until our Lord reached Golgotha, the site of His crucifixion. We also know that Simon s family were among the first of the early Christians. Staying near to Christ, embracing the Cross (quite literally), transformed his life and the life of his family. In contrast, near the end of this Gospel account we are told of another reaction to Jesus passion and death, namely that all His acquaintances stood at a distance. They knew Jesus! They had heard him preaching and teaching, witnessed His signs and miracles, maybe even benefited personally from them. Perhaps they did not participate in mocking Him or calling for His crucifixion. But they chose to stay a safe distance from Him when the going got tough. Unlike Simon, they refused to go too near to Christ. Where will you place yourself this week? Keeping your distance from all the pain and suffering Christ endured? Or close by, staying near to Him like Simon did? It is when we go near to Christ that we can be transformed by Him. It is by embracing the crosses in our lives, stewarding them well rather than trying to run from them, that we become His true disciples. Permanecer cerca de Cristo, abrazando la Cruz (literalmente), transformó su vida y la vida de su familia. En contraste, casi al final de este relato evangélico se nos cuenta de otra reacción a la pasión y muerte de Jesús, a saber, que "todos sus conocidos estaban a cierta distancia". Conocían a Jesús! Le habían escuchado predicar y enseñar, presenciaron sus señales y milagros, incluso se beneficiaron personalmente de ellos. Quizás no participaron en burlarse de Él o en pedir su crucifixión. Pero eligieron mantenerse a una distancia segura de Él cuando las cosas se pusieron difíciles. A diferencia de Simón, se negaron a acercarse demasiado a Cristo. Dónde te colocarás esta semana? Mantener tu distancia de todo el dolor y sufrimiento que Cristo soportó? O cerca, estar cerca de Él como lo hizo Simón? Es cuando nos acercamos a Cristo que podemos ser transformados por Él. 10 Lent is the 40-day season of penance in preparation for the celebration of the greatest event in human history: the redemption of the human race by Jesus Christ. Lent begins Ash Wednesday, March 6, and ends on Thursday, April 18, followed by the Sacred Triduum, April 18-20, and Easter Sunday, April 21. Lenten Disciplines All Christians, by the nature of their lives, are obliged to live in a spirit of penance whereby our exterior acts of prayer, self-denial and charity bear witness to the inner values of our Faith. The Church specifies certain practices of penance during the season of Lent. 1. Self-imposed observance of fasting on all weekdays of Lent is strongly recommended. 2. Catholics are obliged to fast and abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, March 6 and Good Friday, April The Fridays of Lent are obligatory days of abstinence. 4. Catholics age 14 and older are bound by the law of abstinence. 5. The law of abstinence forbids the eating of meat. 6. The law of fasting is obligatory for Catholics from the age of 18 through age The law of fasting prescribes that only one full meal be taken per day; the other meals, if needed, should be significantly smaller, but in accord with one s health needs. Fasting assumes avoidance of food between meals. The substantial observance of these laws is a grave obligation; that is: 1. Anyone who neglects all forms of penance, or deliberately shows contempt for the Church s penitential discipline, may be guilty of serious sin. La Cuaresma este año da comenzó el miércoles 6 de marzo, y termina el jueves 18 de abríl, seguida del Santo Triduo del 18 al 20 de abríl, y la Pascua, el 21 de abríl. Disciplinas Cuaresmales Todos los Cristianos, por su cristianismo, tienen la obligación de vivir en un espíritu de penitencia para que nuestros actos exteriores de oración, de abnegación y de caridad puedan testificar a los valores interiores de nuestra Fe. I. La Iglesia especifica ciertas prácticas de penitencia durante la temporada de Cuaresma: 1. Se recomienda fuertemente que cada uno por su propia cuenta ayune los días de semana durante la Cuaresma. 2. Los católicos están obligados a ayunar y a abstenerse de comer carne el Miércoles de Ceniza, y el 19 de abríl, Viernes Santo. 3. Los viernes de Cuaresma son días de abstinencia obligatoria. 4. Los católicos de 14 años o más están obligados por la ley de abstinencia. 5. La ley de abstinencia prohíbe comer carne. 6. La ley de ayuno es obligatoria para los católicos de 18 a 59 años de edad. 7. La ley de ayuno prescribe que solamente se debe comer una comida completa al día. Las otras comidas, si necesarias, deberán ser más pequeñas, pero de acuerdo a las necesidades de salud de la persona. Se asume que durante el ayuno se debe evitar comer entre comidas. II. La observación sustancial de estas leyes es una obligación grave. Esto significa que: Alguien que se niegue a observar cualquier forma de penitencia Cuaresmal, o deliberadamente muestre desprecio por la disciplina penitencial de la Iglesia, puede que ser culpable de serio pecado. 2. Fallar ocasionalmente en la observación de estos reglamentos penitenciales no incurre en serio pecado. 3. Sin embargo, graves circunstancias como: enfermedades, necesidades en la dieta, obligaciones sociales, son excusas de la obligación de ayuno y abstinencia, pero no de buscar otras formas de penitencia.
