2 CV Esther Garcés, 19/05/2014 2/48 SUMMARY MAIN LINES OF RESEARCH I am interested in plankton dynamics and physical biological interactions in marine systems, particularly noxious and toxic phytoplankton species, their abundance and activity, and the ecosystem effects of their proliferations. My research also examines the factors that regulate the community structure (functional and taxonomic) of microorganisms, and how physical and chemical changes in the marine environment influence these parameters. The focus of my studies has been the coastal environment and nearshore HABs in the Mediterranean Sea, including investigations into the life cycles and strategies of these species, empirical measures of their growth and loss rates, and their cell cycle dynamics, and the compilation of databases regarding organism abundance. The techniques used for this purpose include working with cultured microalgae clones and natural populations, microscopy (optical, scanning, transmission), image analysis, flow cytometry and fluorescent probes. KEY QUALIFICATIONS My contribution to what is considered a high priority topic in European and international background is obvious in my CV, 90 manuscripts in SCI journals, 10 book chapters, 34 publications in international meetings, 20 publications national meetings, 12 outreach publications and more than 150 presentations in meetings. 62% of my publications in peer reviewed journals appeared in the first quartile of the journals in my research area, according to their impact factor, see Table 1. I have an H index of 25 by SCOPUS and ISI Web of Knowledge in April I have contributed to the knowledge of marine phytoplankton species, abundance, distribution and their role in the plankton community. My interests are on the phytoplankton in situ growth rates and life histories. I was a co author in a revision of the state of the art on in situ growth rates and life cycles of dinoflagellates in a revision book. I have participated in the physical biological description to explain the occurrence and maintenance of the harmful phytoplankton proliferations. I have worked on new molecular methods for the recognition and quantification of the species. I suggested a new hypothesis on the introduction and expansion of the HAB species. I contributed to the knowledge of spatial and temporal distribution of the different harmful microalgae and to the study of their relationships with other components of the food web. COORDINATING PROJECTS Although the complexity of algal life cycles and the morphological variety and behaviour of their different stages are known, very seldom have they been considered in the populations' dynamics models. The necessity to revise the life cycle and its role in the capacity to maintain and to produce high biomass gave place to a workshop financed by the European community, LIFEHAB EVK , Life history of microalgal species causing harmful blooms, where I was the co ordinator. 25 specialists attended this meeting on life cycles of species that produce HABs and the main gaps in knowledge and future research lines were identified. A book published by the EU was the outcome of this workshop. The analysis of the geographical extension of the toxic algae in the Mediterranean Sea was part of the EU project STRATEGY EVK3 CT , in which 8 European entities participated. In this project, I was responsible for one workpackage, the study of the adaptive strategies (growth, life history and behaviour). I was the coordinator of the STREP European project SEED GOCE CT , Life cycle transformations among HAB species, and the environmental and physiological factors that regulate them. 12 European entities make up the consortium of SEED which includes scientists from 7 European countries as well as the United States (Woods Hole

I was the coordinator of a national project of the Ministry of Science and Innovation PARAL CTM Currently I am the coordinator of a contract with the private company KAO CHEMICAL. I am a partner of an EU project of the FP7 programme and the coordinator for my institution of DEVOTES FP7 ENV , DEVelopment Of innovative Tools for understanding marine biodiversity and assessing good Environmental Status. Also I am the coordinator of the national project GRADIENTS CTM about the study of small scale processes in the coastal area.
