In ancient times salt was valuable as seasoning, to preserve foods, and disinfect wounds. Salt signified permanence, loyalty, and commitment. In those days salt crystals contained other minerals and the salt could easily leach out. What remained was useful only for keeping footpaths free of vegetation, as Jesus says, no longer good for anything but to be... trampled underfoot (Matthew 5:13). In Jesus time, houses were lit with oil lamps. Even one small oil lamp would have seemed very bright in the darkness, and a reminder of God as the creator of light. The prophet Isaiah tells us how to be light and salt: Share your bread with the hungry, shelter the oppressed and the homeless; clothe the naked... and do not turn your back on your own (Isaiah 58:7). Your good deeds, says Jesus, will be the light causing others to glorify your heavenly Father (Matthew 5:16). Copyright 2010, WLP. All rights reserved. Do NOT come to Mass when you have flu-like symptoms. 2. Do NOT bring sick children to Mass or to school. 3. Wash your hands before and after touching your eyes, face or mouth. 4. Those who must care for a sick family member at home, or who reasonably fear they will spread a flu virus if they leave home are also excused from Mass. 5. We DISCOURAGE distribution of the Host on the tongue until this flu epidemic has passed. Doing so can contaminate the entire ciborium if a finger touches an infected person on the tongue or mouth, and then returns to the ciborium. THE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM Baptisms are celebrated at St. Anthony on 9:00am or 2:30pm. Parents must schedule the baptismal date and the Baptismal Preparation Class in the Parish Office. Preregistration for this class is required. Baptism should be conferred in the first few weeks after the birth of a child. Godparents must be practicing Catholics. BAPTISMS We welcome the infants who were recently initiated into the family of Christ. May they always feel the love of God working through their lives as they are guided by their parents and godparents. THE SACRAMENT OF MATRIMONY Couples should contact the parish office to make an appointment with the parish marriage coordinator at least six months in advance of any wedding date to begin preparations. As a teenager, it is a struggle to get along with others and I feel during these times I can use my faith to better my relationships with them: Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father. I have learned that if I really want to have a strong faith, I must take on the challenges of my own life just as Jesus did and treat others just as Jesus would treat them. God wants us to bring others closer to Him. I feel one of the best ways to do this is to be a living example of Christ. Kristen, age 17- LIFETEEN Classes are held on: 3:30-4:45pm or 6:30-7:45pm CONGRATULATIONS FIRST RECONCILIATIONS With great honor we congratulate each of the 200 children and youth from our parish who received the sacrament of First Reconciliation on Saturday, February 1st! They arrived very early in the morning along with their parents to participate in a spiritual retreat as they anxiously anticipated and prepared to receive the sacrament! We are extremely proud of these children & youth who did a great job confessing their sins for the very first time! Please pray for all of these families, their catechists, and all of the remarkable priests who continuously help us to celebrate the amazing and healing sacrament of Reconciliation where we truly and intimately embrace Jesus Christ. Our flavor and impact are lost. How difficult it is to get them back again. In the late 1940s the Christophers movement began in the United States. The Christophers motto, It is better to light one candle than to curse the darkness, attracted many through the Christophers effective use of the media, advertising, and the encouragement of its members to proclaim Christ in the workplace. Jesus calls us to be that candle and to set ourselves in the most visible place. Jesus, who brought eternal light to the world, tells us that we, too, are the light of the world. HISPANIC MINISTRIES / MINISTERIOS HISPANOS LO MÁS ELEMENTAL En el Evangelio de hoy Jesús dice que somos sal y luz sólo cuando nos decidimos a ser útiles y a hacer el bien. En la antigüedad la sal se usaba para condimentar y conservar los alimentos, y para desinfectar las heridas. La sal significaba permanencia, fidelidad y compromiso. En esos tiempos los granos de sal contenían otros minerales y la sal se podía desvanecer fácilmente. Lo que quedaba sólo servía para dejar los caminos transitables sin vegetación; como dice Jesús, ya no sirve para nada y se tira a la calle para que la pise la gente (Mateo 5:13). En los tiempos de Jesús las casas se iluminaban con lámparas de aceite. Aun la más pequeña lámpara de aceite hubiera parecido muy brillante en la oscuridad y recordaba a Dios como creador de la luz. El profeta Isaías nos dice cómo ser luz y sal:... que compartas tu pan con el hambriento y abras tu casa al pobre sin techo; que vistas al desnudo y no le des la espalda a tu propio hermano (Isaías 58:7). Cotta as Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of Sacramento! St. Martin de Porres , a Black saint, was born from Spanish Nobleman, Juan de Porres, and a black freed woman, Anna Vasquez. He was the first Dominican professed brother in Martin worked as an infirmaries doctor/ nurse, and pharmacist. Martin de Porres is called Father of the Poor because of charitable acts and his dedication to prayer. He was canonized a saint in Martin de Porres was the first African American saint from the Americas.
